Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez II slated for Dec. 7 in Arizona

Two-division champion Oscar Valdez has officially earned his second shot to claim the WBO junior lightweight belt from Emanuel Navarrete, with officials confirming their rematch is set to be staged Dec. 7 in Arizona.

Valdez’s attorney, Pat English, told Boxing Scene of the bout’s date Thursday. Top Rank is taking another fight to Arizona on Sept. 20 where Jaime Munguia’s super-middleweight bout against Erik Bazinyan will take place at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Valdez, 33, appeared to have lost his opportunity to become a champion again when Navarrete (38-2-1, 31 KOs) defeated Valdez (32-2, 24 KOs) by unanimous decision one year ago this month in Glendale.

Since then, Valdez has produced an emotion-packed seventh-round TKO of Liam Wilson March 29 in Glendale.

Navarrete, meanwhile, attempted to become a four-division champion on May 18, but was sluggish and aimless in an upset loss to Ukraine’s Denis Berinchyk with the WBO 135-pound belt on the line.

That sent Navarrete back to 130 pounds, and the WBO had already ruled Valdez would be the challenger.

What a joke. Navarrete doesn't even want to box anymore. Guy is an absolute mess. Dude hasn't at all been the fighter that upset Dogboe, and he tore through Valdez. Only reason this might be close is because Navarrete is only looking for a paycheck nowadays.

Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez, Rafael Espinoza-Robeisy Ramirez in doubleheader

Three-division champion and WBO junior lightweight ruler Emanuel Navarrete will run it back with old foe Oscar Valdez on a card that will feature another premier rematch, between Rafael Espinoza and Robeisy Ramirez, Top Rank announced today.

The event will take place at Footprint Center in Phoenix on December 7.

Espinoza will be defending the WBO featherweight title against the man he claimed it from last December, while Navarrete, who won a wide decision over Valdez in August last year, will make his first fight since a May loss to Denys Berinchyk.

Navarrete, 38-2-1 (31 KOs), a 2008 and 2012 Olympian, claimed his first world title in 2018 with a victory over Isaac Dogboe.

“The fans will see the same 'Vaquero,' as always,” said Navarrete. “We’re working hard to regain the aggressiveness that defines me and give all the fans the intense fight they want to see on December 7. I still have a lot to do and big goals to accomplish in boxing, including unifying my title and possibly moving back up to 135 pounds."

Valdez, a 33-year-old from Sonora, Mexico, is 32-2 (24 KOs) and said he was “thrilled” to have the opportunity to face Navarrete once more.

“Although we lost the first fight, we stayed disciplined and focused on returning stronger,” Valdez said. “I know it’s a tough challenge – but not impossible. With that in mind, we returned to the gym and studied what we did wrong in the first fight to avoid making the same mistakes. I’m excited and confident that we will be victorious this time."

Espinoza is 25-0 (21 KOs). He climbed off the floor from a fifth-round knockdown to put Ramirez, a Cuban southpaw, on the canvas during a crucial 12th round to win by majority decision in what ESPN deemed the Upset of the Year.

From Guadalajara, Mexico, Espinoza made his first title defense in June when defeating countryman Sergio Chirino Sanchez in four rounds.

“I know the fans, just like me, have been looking forward to this fight. It’s a fight that I wanted,” Espinoza said. “I’m very motivated and happy, and I’m training at 100 per cent. This night of rematches will be great for Mexico, and I’m ready to give it my all, just like I always do.

“Our first fight was extremely close, action-packed and regarded by many as Fight of the Year. Since the cards were read, my team and I have been asking for the rematch.”

The undercard will feature Mexico's junior welterweight contender Lindolfo Delgado (21-0, 15 KOs) in a 10-rounder against Jackson Marinez (22-3, 10 KOs).

Emiliano Fernando Vargas (12-0, 10 KOs) will be aiming for his fifth win of the year in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight against Alan Ayala (11-4, 7 KOs), and Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jnr (11-0, 10 KOs) will return in an eight-round heavyweight fight.

“December 7 is going to be a special night in Phoenix, as we have two 50-50 rematches of incredible fights,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “Navarrete and Valdez are two of the greatest Mexican warriors the sport has seen, and I expect another toe-to-toe battle. I thought the first Espinoza-Ramirez fight was the 2023 Fight of the Year, and I expect the 13th round to pick up where the dramatic 12th left off.”

Giovani Santillan-Frederick Lawson added to Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez undercard

Welterweights Giovani Santillan and Frederick Lawson will square off in a 10-round fight on December 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, a bout that was added to the undercard of Emanuel Navarrete’s junior lightweight title defense against Oscar Valdez.

Additionally, three more fighters on the verge of breakouts – Richard Torrez Jnr, Albert Gonzalez and Steven Navarro – have been added to the Navarrete-Valdez undercard, which will stream live on ESPN+.

Santillan, 32-1 (17 KOs), a 32-year-old southpaw from San Diego, last year had something of a breakthrough, defeating longtime contender Erick Bone in July and knocking out Alexis Rocha in October. Santillan then fought for an interim welterweight title in May, when he was stopped by Brian Norman Jnr. (who was later elevated to full titleholder status).

Lawson, 30-5 (22 KOs), a 35-year-old Chicago resident originally from Accra, Ghana, topped Estevan Villalobos in April 2023 but followed up with losses to Vergil Ortiz Jnr in January and Rocha in March.

Torrez, 11-0 (10 KOs), a promising heavyweight, and Emiliano Fernando Vargas, 12-0 (10 KO), an electric junior welterweight, will fight in separate eight-rounders. Featherweight “Chop Chop” Gonzalez, 11-0 (7 KOs) will take on Argentina’s Gerardo Antonio Perez, 12-6-1 (3 KOs) in another eight-round fight.

Navarro, a 4-0 (3 KOs) junior bantamweight, will fight for the fifth time in 2024 in a six-rounder against Puerto Rico’s Gabriel Bernardi, 7-1 (3 KOs). Welterweight prospect Art Barrera Jnr, 6-0 (4 KOs) also will appear on the card, in a six-round bout against an opponent to be named.

Featherweight titleholder Rafael Espinoza will defend his belt against Robeisy Ramirez in the co-feature to Navarrete-Valdez. Both fights – each of them rematches – will be televised on ESPN (10:30 p.m. ET).

I’ve fcuking idea what has just happened there, what is Ramirez doing ffs. That was a good fight too. Gutted.

Eye doesn’t look too clever and Espinoza was a bit handy with the elbow but still, that looks really bad for Ramirez, actually thought he was doing quite well in the fight too.

I think Ramirez just didn't want anymore and they had already done the work beforehand to set up a narrative for why. No clear elbows seemed to have landed from Espinoza from what I saw. Eye just got damaged "Oh it must have been an elbow" and there you go.

Watching it back, it looks like he didn’t want to know anymore, relentless big pudendum is Espinoza.

Tough night at the office for Valdez, worst beating he's took, down and hurt in the 1st, left hook from Navarrete sending him down with another right for good measure, Navarrete continued to put a beating on him, has success with that left hook come uppercut that he likes to throw followed by the right, Valdez brave, took his lumps but was down again end of the 4th, hurt by a couple of rights, looked messy but it was defo the punches that had hos legs deserting him, Valdez actually came out firing in the 5th but it was the last roll of the dice, Navarrete cranked up the heat round 6 and creased Valdez with a left hook to the body for the KO, Navarrete back to his best
