Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
Looking at the heavies of the last 40 years who are in:
Tyson
Holy
Bowe
Lewis
Klitschkos
I think Joshua has done enough to join that list.

Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
is that all in the last 40 years? tbf they havent exactly opened the flood gates if those are the only ones. vitali is a bit weak but even he was prob #1 in the division at a time and the rest all well deserving, hardly the stuff of guys like wilder just waltzing in
Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
How do I revote ?
Shoulda voted "yes, but shouldn't.."
Shoulda voted "yes, but shouldn't.."

Yeah. To its credit, they have kept things pretty select.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑28 Nov 2024, 15:01 is that all in the last 40 years? tbf they havent exactly opened the flood gates if those are the only ones. vitali is a bit weak but even he was prob #1 in the division at a time and the rest all well deserving, hardly the stuff of guys like wilder just waltzing in
It will be close for AJ
Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?

Yes.
No other boxer has done more to increase the global popularity of the sport since Pacquiao retired.
AJ deserves the token honour because he has almost single handedly put a lot of money into a lot pockets.
He also didn't do it by swindling the fans either - Mayweather, McGregor, Paul etc.

Has he? What's his name recognition like outside the UK?Thomastearns wrote: ↑08 Dec 2024, 10:08 Yes.

Well, at Joshua's peak he was one of the faces of Under Armor same time as Steph Curry. You would see large cutouts of Joshua in general sports stores in Japan (in Tokyo anyway). So if he was making inroads in an Asian market, I suspect he was too in the African markets, Americas, and European.
Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
He may have only participated in 13 world title fights, but he unified 3 titles, defeated a hall of famer, and drew a ton of money. Seems to me like he'd get in.

Vinnie Pazienza got in: the barriers to entry are basically eroded to nothing now. In AJ's case he always had a strong argument as a unified heavyweight champion with a lot of big fights in his career. The number of peers he has who aren't in is basically 0.

Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
How could he not be?
What a joke of a Hall of Fame if a clear HW champ doesn't get in.
People here seem to be down on him right now, but seriously, not getting in the HOF?
I can see arguing about Wilder and perhaps concluding, close but no cigar. But to suggest Joshua might be left out is pretty much a slam on Joshua, not a good-faith consideration of who should be in.

Exactly; it shouldn't even be up for debate.SportsRatings wrote: ↑11 Dec 2024, 13:26 How could he not be?

To reiterate, Olympic champion, unified champ with numerous defences and two time champion.
How does such a fighter not get in on that basis?

He needs something to define his legacy like a 6th round TKO loss against a guy who called you in as a last minute replacement for his retirement fight.Syntax Error wrote: ↑13 Dec 2024, 09:33

(in fairness, AJ has some of those components in combination...)

IBHOF often includes fighters who were big names in their day, but not ATG's, it wouldn't be that unusual.

The only one he hasn't faced is Fury. Wilder was always trash and worse than many of the guys that Joshua faced.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑18 Dec 2024, 19:25Because of not fighting and beating his contemporariesSportsRatings wrote: ↑11 Dec 2024, 13:26 How could he not be?

Joshua has the best resume in the HW division outside of Usyk.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑18 Dec 2024, 19:25Because of not fighting and beating his contemporariesSportsRatings wrote: ↑11 Dec 2024, 13:26 How could he not be?

Fury is a glaring omission, but it wasn't Joshua who disappeared for 3 years to get fat, right when they were the top 2 in division.
There's also Wilder, but I don't think Wilder's management wanted to risk putting him in a unification fight without some sort of big build-up.
Wilder is a cherry picker supreme; remember he only fought Fury in 2018 because he thought Tyson wasn't ready and yes, Tyson wasn't ready, but he was still good enough to expose Wilder.
After that, those two got drawn into a trilogy saga which kept both of them busy.

Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
Agreed. Joshua has a number of names on his record which are superior to Wilder. Tyson was serving a drugs ban and pulled out of a fight that they had both signed to fight.Syntax Error wrote: ↑20 Dec 2024, 11:20Joshua has the best resume in the HW division outside of Usyk.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑18 Dec 2024, 19:25Because of not fighting and beating his contemporariesSportsRatings wrote: ↑11 Dec 2024, 13:26 How could he not be?

Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
He won one or two of the meaningless belts so he'll almost certainly get in. Doesn't take much these days. Looks bad for the sport if no one does. Joshua outside of UK is not a household name. Ask sports fans to name the top five professional boxers and you'll get blank stares.
Re: Will Anthony Joshua be voted into the IBHOF?
Worse than that. Many would name drop Jake Paul.Cap wrote: ↑25 Dec 2024, 13:44 He won one or two of the meaningless belts so he'll almost certainly get in. Doesn't take much these days.
