Fernando ‘Puma’ Martinez-Kazuto Ioka Rematch In Play For Dec. 31 In Tokyo

Fernando ‘Puma’ Martinez and Kazuto Ioka are ready to run it back.

A rematch to one of the year’s best fights is fully in play, as confirmed by Martinez’s team. The defending WBA/IBF junior bantamweight titlist is once again set to hit the road, as their bout will take place on Dec. 31 in Tokyo, Japan.

Argentina’s Martinez claimed a twelve-round, unanimous decision over Ioka in their terrific July 7 unification bout at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo. The final scores—116-112, 117-111 and a horrific 120-108 card (Edward Hernandez Sr.)—did not at all reflect the non-stop action that took place.

Nevertheless, Martinez (17-0, 9 knockouts) retained the IBF 115-pound title and won the WBA belt. He also surged to the No. 1 slot in the Ring’s junior bantamweight rankings.

Fernando Martinez vs Kazuto Ioka 2 official for December 31st

Hayato Tsutsumi also sees action against Rene Alvarado

As expected, WBA super flyweight champion Fernando Martinez and former titlist Kazuto Ioka will run it back on New Year’s Eve at Tokyo’s Ota-City Gymnasium.

Martinez (17-0, 9 KO) took a competitive decision over four-division champ Ioka (31-3-1, 16 KO) when they met in July, building up an early lead and fending off a late charge to retain the IBF belt and take Ioka’s WBA. His punishing, high-volume style seems like more than Ioka can handle at his age, but Ioka has a history of coming on strong in rematches, so don’t count him out.

“I felt endless frustration after that loss,” Ioka said at a press conference in Tokyo. “I’m definitely going to make amends and prove I can get back on top.”

“I won’t necessarily retire if I lose, but this isn’t a world where you can keep thinking there will always be another chance,” Ioka said.

Only the WBA title will be at stake, as Martinez vacated his IBF belt in the face of an ordered clash with Willibaldo Garcia.

The most noteworthy undercard bout features blue-chip super featherweight prospect Hayato Tsutsumi (5-0, 2 KO) facing durable but overcooked former titlist Rene Alvarado (34-14, 22 KO). Tsutsumi boasts notable amateur victories over Otabek Kholmatov and Lazaro Alvarez and looks like a potential star in the making, though he did break one of Japanese boxing’s cardinal taboos by missing weight in last April’s win over Anselmo Moreno.

That said, he apparently had COVID during training camp, so hopefully the JBC didn’t go biblical on him.

I like Martinez again. He throws tons of punches and unless he’s not in prime shape I can’t see Ioka beating him, but Ioka is good in rematches, so who knows. The winner should fight Bam. Neither Martinez now Ioka are spring chickens. Bam likely beats them both but I think Martinez would be a better fight

Where’s Ruthless’ fight week call? Think Martinez may stop him this time. Looked much faster and stronger than Ioka last time out (suspicion of PEDS IMO) Ioka looked cooked. Can’t see him improving another year on.

I couldn’t. Anyway looks like the fight may be off. Martinez pulled out of the press conference today. Has been struggling with a high fever.

Looks like they can reschedule to next year.

Apparently Martinez got the flu.

Not even an injury.

Shame.

Always look forward to the Japan end of year card.

Garbage, read yesterday that Martinez was struggling with the weight, whether that was anything to do with being ill or if it was even true I don't know but either way it's a sickener to end 2024

Fernando Martinez vs Kazuto Ioka 2 official for May 11th in Tokyo

WBA super flyweight champion Fernando “Pumita” Martinez and Kazuto Ioka were supposed to rematch in December, only for Martinez to withdraw during fight week due to illness. Rescheduling negotiations appeared to fall apart, leaving Martinez to pursue a clash with WBC champ Jesse “Bam” Martinez instead.

They’ve now gone back to the original plan, as Abema announced that Martinez and Ioka will officially run it back on May 11th in Tokyo.

Martinez (17-0, 9 KO) took home their first meeting last July through his signature high-pressure offense, which on paper is a winning formula against the 36-year-old Ioka (31-3-1, 16 KO). That said, Ioka is 2-0 in revenge matches against Donnie Nietes and Joshua Franco, so don’t be too quick to count the old man out.

Top prospects Hayato Tsutsumi (6-0, 3 KO), Daiya Kira (2-0, 2 KO), and Reito Tsutsumi see action as well. We’ll let you know if any Stateside broadcasters pick this up.

KAZUTO IOKA ANTICIPATES WAIT FOR FERNANDO MARTINEZ WILL BE WORTH IT

In July, then-WBA junior bantamweight titlist Kazuto Ioka met IBF counterpart Fernando Martinez in a unification matchup. Martinez was able to win a 12-round unanimous decision in an exciting fight that was due to lead to a rematch in late December.

The Argentine visitor fell ill, however, and the fight was called off at the 11th hour.

Thankfully, both sides were able to broker a deal for Martinez to put his WBA title is on the line — he had to vacate the IBF title because he had a mandatory defense obligation — at the Ota-City Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday.

Ioka, rated at No. 3 by The Ring at junior bantamweight, believes the extended wait will be worthwhile on fight night.

"I'm happy that the rematch with Martinez has been confirmed for May 11, and I'm full of gratitude to everyone involved who helped make it happen," Ioka (31-3-1, 16 KOs) told The Ring. "I was fully preparing for the fight back in December, so of course I was very disappointed when it was cancelled. But I accepted the situation. There was nothing else to do."

Having completed 12 rounds with Martinez 10 months ago, the Japanese standout knows exactly what to expect.

"Martinez is a very good fighter," he said. "After sharing the ring with him, I felt his technique as well. In order to win this time, I'll need both heart and a sharp mind. I have to fight with technical intelligence."

At 36, with a long, illustrious career of world titles at strawweight, junior flyweight, flyweight and junior bantamweight, Ioka could be forgiven for stepping away and leaving it to the youngsters.

"Training alongside the younger generation of fighters gives me great motivation," he said of spending time alongside the likes of talented trio — Hayato Tsutsumi, his younger brother Reito and Daiya Kira, who also will be on the undercard. "I truly believe they are the kind of fighters who must become world champions in the future."

As always, he kept it classy with his message to Martinez ahead of their upcoming fight.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Martinez in the ring again on May 11," he said. "Let's both bring our best."

Martinez (17-0, 9 KOs), rated at No. 1 by The Ring at junior bantamweight, was a standout amateur and represented his home country of Argentina all over the world. Martinez appeared in the World Series of Boxing and the 2016 Olympics before turning professional in '17. He won his first nine fights, all in Argentina, before venturing to South Africa to stop Athenkosi Dumezweni (TKO 11).

The 33-year-old was largely unknown until he upset Jerwin Ancajas (UD 12) to win the IBF title, repeated the trick in his first defense and stopped another Filipino Jade Bornea (TKO 11). Impressively, he unified with WBA ruler Kazuto Ioka (UD 12) in Japan.

Martinez wins another decision, unanimous, couple close scores and a wide one, never scored it but it was nip/tuck, great action, Ioka knocked Martinez down in the 10th, clipped him with a left hook which steadied him before another one put him down, great shot, cut across the chin of Martinez who tbf recovered well, I've seen fighters stopped with they shots, good scrap well worth a watch, plenty leather thrown and landed

Martinez is small
He's a good interior boxer and covers his ground well
Not so sure about his outside game
