Realistically, which legendary HWs could beat a top shape version of Tyson Fury?

Post by apollo creed »

Tbh I think Fury is very hard to be beat. Its not just his size and reach but also his skills , his grit, the way he moves, his power and his ring IQ. The only names that come to my mind are Ali, Lennox and Bowe, that would have good chances to beat Fury.

Prime Lennox would be hard for him to beat mainly because I don't think Fury hits hard enough for Lennox to respect his power. Out of prime Lennox did fairly well against a prime Vitaliy who is similar size and skill to Fury with more power.

Lots. Fury is dirty and his achievements are misty due to his PED drug use.

Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, and Larry Holmes would school Tyson Fury, then stop him late.

Dempsey vs Fury would be a lot like Dempsey vs Willard.

None

Athletes get better with every generation, anybody who says otherwise is deluded. Same is true with boxers.

His size is so important that his only two losses are to a 6'3 opponent. He had also been dropped by a two more 6'3 opponents, a 6'4 opponent and dropped by a 212 pounder who also came in at 230-240 in the following fights where he also dropped him multiple times. Size can be important but, if anything, it's the way to actually beat Fury if size comes with speed or power.

I think so. The re fighting more smartly without wasting lots of punches when they don't need to do it. Also the nutrition and the training routine are much more spot on.

Vitali is no near to Fury in terms of skills and talent. Fury probably hits as hard as AJ or Wilder.

Joshua also stopped Whyte but Fury couldn't stop Ngannou, Wallin, Johnson or Klitschko if we're using common opponents. I do not rate Wilder's boxing skills but there's one thing he has and it's power. Fury's finish % is 70%, while Joshua's is 90% and Wilder's is 97% (I know that's a stat that needs context but it's quite clearly a big gap).

Well AJ got stopped by a fat-short hw and looked like a complete amateur vs DDD. Of course he's good at stopping B, C level and over the hill fighters. :TU:

A) The pool of pro boxers is so much smaller than it was 60+ years ago, even with the increase in eastern euro comp. Boxing was one of the top 2 SPORTS GLOBALLY from 1910 until about 1960. Now it's what . . maybe barely in the top 10?

B) Nutrition and training: This is why the work-rare and physiques of the majority of top heavyweights is crap compared to even the 1980s when everyone called the coked-out heavyweights fat. Just like the rest of the populace fighters get fat in-between fights and with less fights per year, that's a lot of opportunities to get out of condition.

C) "Fight smarter" . . GTFO outta here. One reason why Usyk is dominating despite not being either super fast or having a knockout punch is he has skills and conditioning. Frikkin' squared up, stiff Dubois is a novice compared to him and it showed in their fights.

One of the top 5 heavyweights of the past decade (Wilder) was literally a guy who never learned how to box. I'm not joking in saying Wilder wouldn't have been paid as a sparring partner of the top heavyweights of the 1970s. He wasn't even on the Roy Tiger Williams/Jeff Merritt level let alone Frazier/Ali/Norton/Foreman/Holmes.

First logical post I've seen in this thread. The HW division is historically bad right now, it's littered with a bunch of oversized guys with limited skill.

That's no dig at Usyk, he's the only proper fighter in the division, but I struggle to see him becoming a HW champion 15-20 years ago.

Performance enhancing drugs work by increasing your ability to train; you don't take them on the night and turn into superman. Fury is generally out of shape and doesn't have a massive punch. I'd be interested to know what advantage you think he might have gained from taking anything.

Your comment was about Fury's power being more than that of Joshua's. If Joshua is a complete amateur, why couldn't Fury stop the same opponents? Fury is the one that actually lost on most fan cards to a complete amateur in Ngannou.

Don't need to go far really. Both of the Klitschko brothers on their prime would do it.

Lets not ignore the fact that ped testing of nowadays is much more rigorous than what they were back in the day. Fury would stop many legendary hw champions, with a random blood testing for peds. :OhYes:

Ali, Lewis, Foreman, Holmes, Frazier, Louis and maybe even a prime Mike Tyson would all have beaten Fury in my humble opinion.
