Oscar Duarte vs Regis Prograis in the works for February 15th in Anaheim

After two very different 2024s, Oscar Duarte and Regis Prograis are reportedly gearing up to meet in a crossroads fight next month

Lance Pugmire brings word of a brewing clash between super lightweights Oscar Duarte and Regis Prograis, which is eyed for February 15th in Anaheim, California.

Duarte (28-2-1, 22 KOs) is best-known for a 2023 loss to Ryan Garcia that saw him walk into a check hook in the eighth, but while his subsequent drubbing of JoJo Diaz may not mean much at this point, he deserves credit for a hard-fought win over the underrated Batyr Akhmedov in November.

“Rougarou” (29-3, 24 KOs) is in very different straits, badly underwhelming in back-to-back losses to Devin Haney and Jack Catterall. He seemingly lost the athleticism so key to his style immediately after smoking Jose Zepeda in November 2022 and doesn’t seem capable of adjusting to compensate.

The good news for him is that he won’t have to chase Duarte, who’s more than happy to march right into the fire. There’s a very good chance this turns into a banger between two ferocious-but-vulnerable sluggers.

Stylistically, this fight could suit Prograis.

But Duarte has the momentum and freshness on his side.

Oscar Duarte and Regis Prograis will fight in Anaheim on February 15

Heavy-handed super lightweights Oscar Duarte and Regis Prograis will meet in Anaheim, California on February 15, it was announced today by Golden Boy Promotions.

The fight, which will take place at Honda Center, represents a chance for Prograis to get back in the win column following defeats to both Devin Haney and Jack Catterall. For Duarte, meanwhile, this fight against Prograis represents another slight step up in class, with Prograis undoubtedly one of the biggest and most accomplished names Duarte, 28-2-1 (22), has faced so far.

Duarte, from Chihuahua, Mexico, lost inside eight rounds to Ryan Garcia back in December 2023 but has since then rebounded well, winning two fights on the spin. Last year, he not only stopped Joseph Diaz in nine rounds, but he also outpointed Botirzhon Akhmedov over 10.

As for Prograis, he is a former WBC super lightweight champion who appears, at 35, possibly on the decline. Indeed, there was even talk following his loss against Catterall in October that he may have reached the end of his career and would be set to retire, only for that talk to disappear in 2025. Now 29-3 (24), Prograis will presumably see a fight against Duarte as a slight step down in competition – if, that is, the Mexican is compared with Haney and Catterall – and knows that any kind of win would be exactly what he requires to get going again.

Regis Prograis delighted to back against Oscar Duarte - ‘inactivity is the death of a fighter’

DAZN will host a double-header on February 15 after Golden Boy Promotions made it official that Regis Prograis and Oscar Duarte will meet at the Honda Center in Anaheim. On the same night, in Manchester, Jack Catterall and Arnold Barboza meet in Manchester, England.

Prograis is 29-3 (24 KOs) and coming off consecutive losses to Devin Haney and Catterall, both on the road in San Francisco and Manchester respectively, while Duarte, trained by Robert Garcia, is 28-2-1 (22 KOs).
The 28-year-old Mexican has won his last two, since a 2023 stoppage loss to Ryan Garcia. He returned with wins over Jojo Diaz and Botirzhon Akhmedov.

The 35-year-old Prograis, from New Orleans, managed by Brian Peters, will be boxing under the Golden Boy umbrella having previously been signed to Matchroom. The fight is set for 12 rounds at 140lbs.

“I feel very happy and motivated with this great opportunity to face a former two-time world champion boxer,” said Duarte. “Facing Regis Prograis means a lot to me because he is an established, high-level fighter, and if I can win this fight, it would represent a very important step in my career. I know the fight will not be easy. Prograis is a complicated fighter; he hits hard, has not been knocked out, and also wants to return to victory after his last two defeats. I will have to put up a great fight and be very intelligent to defeat him.”

Prograis said: “First off, I’m just excited to be back in the ring so soon doing what I love. I understand that inactivity is the death of a fighter. At this point in my career, I want and need to be more active. I think this fight has fireworks written all over it. My opponent is a strong, tough and hungry fighter, and it should be a great night in California. I’m excited for this fight and looking forward to next month.”

In Manchester, Catterall and Barboza meet in the main event at the Co-op Live Arena for the WBO’s interim title at junior welterweight and while it had already been announced that the grudge match between Reece Bellotti and Michael Gomez Jnr at junior lightweight – for the British and Commonwealth titles – and that Pat McCormack and Robbie Davies would fight at welterweight, an interesting match has been made between veterans Zelfa Barrett and Jazza Dickens.

Barrett, a 31-year-old from Manchester, is 31-2 (17 KOs) and scored an outstanding win last April, stopping Jordan Gill with bodyshots. Liverpool southpaw Dickens boxed twice in 2024, scoring a stoppage win over journeyman Jayro Fernando Duran in Liverpool in six and defeating Eduardo Mancito after seven in Dubai.

The Manchester bill also includes prospect William Crolla and debutant Conner Tudsbury.

REGIS PROGRAIS (SHOULDER) INJURED, FEB. 15 OSCAR DUARTE CLASH IN JEOPARDY

Oscar Duarte still has a fight date but may need a new dance partner for his Valentine’s Day weekend headliner.

The Ring has learned that Regis Prograis has suffered a shoulder injury and is potentially out of his scheduled Feb. 15 DAZN main event against Mexico’s Duarte.

Representatives from Golden Boy Promotions—who will present the event—did not immediately respond to an inquiry seeking confirmation. However, The Ring was informed via two sources that Prograis—a former two-time 140-pound titlist—underwent an MRI, with the results to confirm the severity of the injury.

Prograis (29-3, 24 KOs) and Duarte (28-2-1, 22 KOs) were due to meet in a scheduled 12-round junior welterweight clash at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Duarte hoped to keep the positive momentum going after two notable wins in 2024.

The 29-year-old slugger from Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico stopped former 130-pound titlist Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz (33-5-1 at the time) in the ninth round last April 27 in Fresno, California. It came less than five months after his valiant showing in a Dec. 2023 eighth-round stoppage to Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs; 1 No-Contest).

Duarte followed the win over Diaz with a ten-round, unanimous decision over bubble contender Batyr Akhmedov (10-4, 9 KOs) last Nov. 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The bout was part of Golden Boy’s first Riyadh Season show.

Prograis’ career has headed in the opposite direction. In fact, it was believed that he would stick to his retirement promise prior to agreeing to terms to face Duarte.

The 35-year-old southpaw announced his exit from the sport immediately after his lopsided defeat to England’s Jack Catterall (30-1, 13 KOs), The Ring’s No. 2 140-pound contender, on Oct. 26 in Manchester, England.

Prograis—New Orleans-born and now based in the greater Houston, Texas area—suffered his second straight defeat and subsequently admitted that he could no longer compete at the sport's elite level. He previously landed on the wrong end of a 12-round shutout to Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs; 1 No-Contest) in Dec. 2023.

A five-fight win streak was snapped, in addition to the end of his WBC 140-pound title reign. Prograis also held the WBA belt, which he lost to then-unbeaten Josh Taylor (15-0 at the time) in their Oct. 2019 World Boxing Super Series finale and WBA/IBF unification bout in London.

The main event development comes just as Golden Boy not only confirmed the show but full undercard details as well. Houston-based rising super middleweight Darius Fulghum (13-0, 11 KOs) faces Detroit’s Winfred Harris (22-2-2, 10 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round co-feature.

MIGUEL MADUENO SET TO FACE OSCAR DUARTE, REPLACING INJURED REGIS PROGRAIS

Oscar Duarte will face a late replacement opponent for the second straight time.

The Ring has learned that Miguel Madueno has stepped in to face Duarte (28-2-1, 22 KOs) atop the Feb. 15 DAZN show from The Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The all-Mexico junior welterweight clash was made in time to help salvage a card in need of a new headliner with minimal time to spare.

Madueño (31-3, 28 KOs) replaced former two-time 140-pound titlist Regis Prograis (29-3, 24 KOs), who—as The Ring previously reported—was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.

Duarte has won two straight since a Dec. 2023 eighth-round stoppage loss to Ryan Garcia in Houston, Texas. His most recent win came in a ten-round, unanimous decision over Batyr Akhmedov (10-4, 9 KOs) last Nov. 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Their terrific fight was pieced together on short notice after Kenneth Sims Jr. (21-2-1, 8 KOs) pulled out of the fight due to a knee injury.

Incidentally, Sims will return on this undercard in a junior welterweight clash against San Antonio’s Kendo Castaneda (21-7, 9 KOs). It is unclear as this goes to publication whether Sims was offered the opportunity to replace Prograis in the main event, or if the matter was not considered on less than two weeks’ notice.

Madueno has lost two of his last three contests, including a ten-round, unanimous decision to Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) last July 6 in Newark, New Jersey.

Wedged in between the setbacks to Davis and Canada’s Steve Claggett two fights earlier was a split decision win over Justin Pauldo (17-1 at the time) last Feb. 28 in Plant City, Florida. Additionally, the sturdy-chinned Madueno has never been stopped or dropped in 34 career bouts—a worthwhile attribute against the heavy-handed Duarte.

Really good main event, Madueno started off quick out the blocks, getting his jab off and landing clean right hands, Duarte started slow by his standards but round 3 he began to assert himself, banging to the body and landing big left hooks but Madueno takes a shot, loads of leather thrown and landed by both men, just seemed Duarte was getting more on top each round, he was getting away with a fair amount of low blows mind, by the 7th Duarte had Madueno backed up, h finally hurt him with a big right and was unloading both hands up and down when the ref jumped on, thought it was slightly premature at first but Madueno was taking a pummeling and not moving
