So I was doing a video on George Byers and I stated one of my dream matches with him would be against barbados joe walcott.
Only to discover that apparently a fight between them actually may of happened?
Here are the notes:
Some of his fights were exhibitions, many were all out war – even a few were on the quiet, including a bout in May 1899 against future World Welterweight champion Joe Wolcott, a private affair held at George Godfrey’s gym in front of a select few spectators and wagered on heavily. Byers forced the future champion to surrender after four bloody and brutal rounds, though he refused to talk about it in years to come.
I searched the achieve Here & found no mention of it. I searched Newspapers & found no mention of it. But a private fight would have no mentions' publically.
But I did find quite a bit linking the two fighters...and some serious bad blood between them.
Notes:
May 1899 Fight happened i guess
July 1899 Byer's manager Issues a public challenge to meet Joe Walcott in coney island sporting club fight. Nothing comes of it. Byer's states he will go to any city To make the match happen.
Feb 1900 Byers vs George Gardner II - Byers was winning this fight, The newspaper mentions that Walcott who was in Garner's corner was taunting Byers between rounds, Byers got so worked up that he managed to take a swipe at George Gardner as a was on the canvas from a slip during a mixup and gets DQ. Walcott obviously had Byer's flustered, the following weeks Newspapers report that whatever friendship existed between them ended. The bad blood gets real heated.
May 1900 Walcott states Byers is afraid of meeting him (supposedly after Byers beat him in private match) Byers was so angry that is was reported they meet on the street and friends had to prevent them from coming to blows in a street fight as they taunted each other in the street.
Sep 1904 Langford clashes with Walcott. I can't find anything in newspaper's that state Byers was training Langford at this point or in his corner..but He could of been & Not Mentioned.
Oct 1906 Byers shows up at the camp for Honey Mellody and show's him some tricks in how to defeat walcott. The advice proves very beneficial as Byers get's some revenge on Walcott for the Gardner fight and Honey Mellody wins in 15. Walcott was enraged by Byers action's.
There appears to be very bad blood between the two.
It would be nice if we get any more details of the actual fight between Byers & Walcott.
