He's retired more times than Terry Funk.

Re: Fury retires........yawn
So, his career finishes with the following notable fights:
A win over an almost 40 year old Wladimir Klitschko
A win over 37 year old Cruiserweight, Steve Cummingham
2 wins & 1 draw against Deontay Wilder
3 x wins against Derek Chisora
2 x defeats to Oleksandr Uysk
He didn't get to box Dubois, Joshua, Joyce, Parker, Povetkin, Price or Ruiz.
A talented, charismatic fighter, who had a very successful career, but was capable of more.
Ungracious in defeat and, for whatever reason, didn't face quite a few of his best contemporaries.
It has been quite a ride. Enigmatic and a roller coaster. In terms of legacy, he is behind Joshua ( in terms of opposition faced) and could get surpassed by Dubois .
That said, he will have made a fortune, been world champion and will, hopefully, enjoy good health in retirement ( the most important thing of all)

Lennox is still revered despite the two knockout losses to top ten guys and never facing his main rival, I'm sure Tyson will be remembered well.

True, but Lennox beat both guys that beat him and faced Holyfield x 2, Tua, Mercer, Tyson, Akinwande etc, and Bowe put his belt in the bin to avoid fighting him. Lennox in a different league to Fury, legacy wise.mickey1975 wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 11:46 Lennox is still revered despite the two knockout losses to top ten guys and never facing his main rival, I'm sure Tyson will be remembered well.
Fury has had an excellent career, and is very talented but it is frustrating, as I think he could have achieved a lot more.
That said, if you face all of the best opposition available, it is not good for one's health. I was happier that the Uysk rematch was much less visciois and demanding for them both. Here's to a happy, healthy and enjoyable retirement.

They've just had the Lennox debate on Sky Sports News. I'll not repeat it as it will trigger some...big lennox wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 11:51True, but Lennox beat both guys that beat him and faced Holyfield x 2, Tua, Mercer, Tyson, Akinwande etc, and Bowe put his belt in the bin to avoid fighting him. I've not seen that. Will have a look. I thought Fury was superb both times in the Uysk fights and showed unbelievable powers of recovery in the 9th round.mickey1975 wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 11:54They've just had the Lennox debate on Sky Sports News. I think his legacy is massively improved for going in twice against the very best and running him close. It's a shame that he can't be gracious towards Uysk. A maverick, I guess.
Id like to see Jodhua and Uysk retire as well. Preserve their health and let the next generation do their thing.

There won't be many people who rate Fury above Lennox Lewis in the all time list.

Re: Fury retires........yawn
He's getting unanimously powered on Twitter which will always make me smile but people aren't really slating his achievements, it's the fact that he's a spoofer, I'll eat my hat if he never fights again, I doubt he's stupid enough to fail another test and go in exile like one of the other times he retired but unless he sticks to his word for at least a year then people still won't believe him, then maybe he'll get his props but nearly everyone can't be arsed listening to him, between his lies and Joshua's cringe inspirational tweets, get them both in the bin, move over, id rather listen to divvy Dubois muster up a sentence
Re: Fury retires........yawn
If that's it for Fury then I really don't think Lewis or Fury debate is even a debate.
With Lennox, there is a legitmate case of him being the GOAT of the Heavyweight division - I do not have it that way, but I can see the argument.
With Fury - there are so many question marks. Did he even solidify himself at the #1 of his era? Yes Lewis did not fight Bowe, but the Lewis who beat Golota vs the Bowe who also "beat" Golota would have been a horrible watch - its almost the same as saying had Larry Holmes never fought Ali that he needed to fight Ali. Yes the Bowe of 1992-1995 was a real threat, but to be honest - Lewis wasn't really a dominant champion in that period. The Lewis post McCall 2 though was when the Lewis era truly began (obviously alongside Holyfield for a period, but then going clear as #1).
Now, two "black marks" I have against Lewis, I also have against Fury - the inability to give rematches in close fights. For Lewis, I think Holyfield deserved a third fight as did Mercer. For Fury - Klitschko (for me) was worthy of a rematch and without a doubt Ngannou deserved a rematch. I also think whereas I scored Lewis vs Mercer a Lewis win and Holyfield vs Lewis II a draw - I thought Ngannou beat Fury pretty clearly (and Lewis did beat Holyfield in match one).
So I think Fury's claim to being an ATG is based on a razor tight (that's somehow turned into a masterclass) win vs Klitschko which was never solidified, despite Klitschsko activating the rematch clause. Then also wins vs Wilder who, lets be honest, beat 1 decent (but he himself untested) guy in his world title reign and we do not know how Wilder would have fared against the likes of Povetkin, Pulev, Whyte, Klitshsko, Chisora, Parker, Joshua, Ruiz - in his own world title reign. All of the opponents above would have been the best opponent he defended his title against.
Fury will be ranked ahead than some of the poorer "single" version of the world heavyweight champion - e.g. Seldon, Botha, Ibragimov, Liakhovich, Briggs, Chagaev, Maskaev, Bruno, Haye, Martin, Dokes, Weaver, Page, Cotzee, Tate, Berbick, Tubbs, Thomas, Witherspoon, Tucker, etc etc and I would have him above a few short reigned Lineal or unifield championships - Spinks, Joshua, Patterson, Johnansson, Moorer, I don't think I could have him in the top 10 though, to be fair I think he'd be closer to 20 than 10. I think it terms of resume and longevity, he'd have to be behind Wlad.

still a very good career full of a mix of fun, drama, cringe, courage, downs and ups, despite it being shown that usyk was the better fighter and the undisputed king, and that no chance wilder was the #2 of the generation like some claimed
but hard to take anything he says seriously. maybe he's being serious, maybe he's not, but you cant trust him with his track record of saying different sh!t every other day

We will never know, unfortunately. As was famously once said, Fury, AJ and Wilder were the dominant heavyweights for a long period of time. Two fought each other three times, the other fought neither.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 12:42 still a very good career full of a mix of fun, drama, cringe, courage, downs and ups, despite it being shown that usyk was the better fighter and the undisputed king, and that no chance wilder was the #2 of the generation like some claimed

Eddie Hearn on Tyson Fury retiring from boxing: “If you haven't got the heart for it anymore and you don't wanna compete anymore, I think retirement is the best option. It's disappointing obviously for British fight fans because we've got a chance to make the biggest fight in boxing. But if that is the last we see of him, he's had a great career. I doubt it. It's always best to come into retirement to make sure someone pays you to come out of retirement. But if that's his lot, much respect to him and wish him all the best.” [Matchroom Boxing]

Glad someone got the reference
Re: Fury retires........yawn
I rate Fury highly. I'll be disappointed if he retires without ever facing a top tier high-output gunslinger e.g. Joshua or Dubois to prove he can deal with that style.
I think he'll be back but I will have a better idea in a month or two.
