‘I want to fight him again’: Devin Haney looks to get revenge on Ryan Garcia

Devin Haney has an ongoing lawsuit against Ryan Garcia, but still wants a chance to get payback in the ring.

As Devin Haney plans for his return to boxing after a hiatus, he talks to iFL TV about the offers he’s weighing, his ongoing dispute with Ryan Garcia, and more. Haney, who is currently fielding a pitch from Turki Alalshikh to be featured on a Riyadh Season event expects to soon decide on his direction.

Haney on if he intends to fight on a BLK Prime card for his next fight
“We got an offer from BLK Prime for March. I’m here to meet (Alalshikh), that’s why I’m in the UK. He has a Ring Magazine event and so he flew me here and my team here to meet and talk about what’s next.

“As we know, (Alalshikh) is going amazing things out in Saudi, even in America as well, in boxing, so hopefully we can put something together.”

On his lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and the outcome he’s looking for
“My team take care of that, my main thing is to take care of things in the ring and let my team worry about that and take care of that. At the end of the day, me being a fighter, I want get-back in the ring. I want to fight him again and I want to win. That’s how I want justice to be done.”

On if he wants the rematch with Garcia this year
“If he’s clean, yeah. We want to be on an even playing ground, I think that’s important and I’m an advocate for it because I experienced actually being cheated, experienced somebody being on PEDs.”

'He needs to drop the lawsuit’: Ryan Garcia won’t consider Devin Haney rematch unless he ends litigation

Ryan Garcia says Devin Haney must drop his lawsuit against him if he even wants to have a conversation about a potential rematch.

Ryan Garcia made an appearance at the Ring Magazine awards and spent some time talking to Radio Rahim about Devin Haney targeting a rematch with him and what it will take for that to be able to happen. Here’s some of what Garcia had to say on the subject.

Garcia on if he’s surprised Devin Haney wants a rematch with him this year
“No. The only way he’s going to get any respect is to fight me again and try to do better. So I could see why he would (want rematch) but for me, I don’t know. I mean that interests me for sure, I would be down to do a rematch but a lot of things need to play out the way I need them to play out.

“First and foremost he needs to drop the lawsuit if he even wants to have a conversation about it. To me, I thought that was a weak move by him and now he wants to backtrack and say that’s how he’s going to get it back but before he was saying different. But I’m ready to fight him, I already fought him and beat him.”

On Haney planning to insist on 24-hour random drug testing for any rematch
“We won’t be using VADA, we’ll be using the people I want to use because for some strange reason Bill Haney keeps saying ‘VADA, VADA, VADA, VADA, VADA’ — it’s kind of strange to me. Why can’t I use USADA or any other organization? Seems a little fishy to me that they love VADA and VADA loves them. It’s just weird. Nobody’s asking those questions, I wonder why.

“I just feel like they’re too entangled, I mean it’s a conflict of interest truly. I know in my heart of hearts I’ve never taken steroids in my life and to this day I’ll go down until I die saying I never did...Like that was my best victory and they took it away, so yeah, I’m a little salty about it and I’ll never use VADA again because to me that’s fishy.

“I tested negative all the way through and then all the sudden I’m positive after I beat him? And all the sudden his friggin’ brother posted way before everybody even knew that I was ‘going to test positive’ — nobody’s asking these questions and nobody’s caring so it’s just like absurd and weird to me.”

On his next plans
“It’s looking like I’m going to fight Teofimo Lopez, so that’s good. I’ve seen him today, he’s a little strange but other than that I’m ready to whoop his ass.”

Oscar De La Hoya: No need for Devin Haney-Ryan Garcia rematch

Oscar De La Hoya has completely dismissed the idea of a Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney rematch.

“I see no need for it,” De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, recently told Fight Hub TV. “Ryan Garcia destroyed [Haney], and that’s the bottom line.”

De La Hoya conveniently omitted the facts that Garcia came into the fight more than three pounds overweight and tested positive for the banned substance ostarine afterwards – an infraction for which he is serving a one-year ban from boxing. This alone is reason enough that Garcia “destroying” Haney is very much not the bottom line.

Those unfair advantages aside, one could still make the case that Garcia didn’t “beat” Haney by all that much. Garcia scoring three hard knockdowns and his immense fan base rallying to decry the draw scorecard on the night obscure the fact that Garcia fought in spurts and had very little success when he wasn’t hurting Haney. (To say nothing of the fact that Garcia was deducted a point, canceling out one of those knockdowns.)

A reasonable scorecard might have awarded Haney Rounds 2 through 6, and maybe also Rounds 8 and 9, when Garcia failed to take advantage of a big Round 7. Writers such as Chris Mannix and Mike Coppinger scored the fight for Haney at the time, though the dissent quickly fell away amid the ensuing controversy over Garcia’s failed drug test.

“There’s fighters here [at the Ring magazine awards] like Teofimo [Lopez] that we can match up with Ryan and make a terrific, terrific event,” De La Hoya said.

“I was once a fighter, and I’m a promoter now, but I think like a fighter – I wanna see the best fight the best.”

Boxing fans want the same. But they might just want a level playing field between the fighters as well.

The big question is...

Did Haney have a curry when he was in London.

Be a shame if he didn't.

I'd favor Garcia to win the rematch as well. Wouldn't even be surprised if he pops dirty again since there's really been no major consequences as a result of his doing that.

Sources: Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia settle suit, target rematch

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia jointly asked a court Wednesday to pause proceedings for 90 days surrounding Haney's lawsuit against Garcia because of a tentative settlement, according to a legal document obtained by ESPN.

Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) filed a lawsuit against Garcia in September in U.S. District Court in New York seeking damages for battery, fraud and breach of contract in connection with Garcia's doping violation after their April title fight in Brooklyn.

The tentative settlement was agreed to as Haney and Garcia are closing in on a deal for a rematch in the second half of 2025, sources told ESPN.

Garcia floored Haney three times in a major upset decision victory, but that result was later overturned to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine. Garcia was suspended one year and fined upward of $1.2 million after he reached a settlement with the commission.

Haney was seeking unspecified damages and alleged Garcia committed battery because "his contest was limited to a bout held fairly and under the rules."

"While Devin Haney agreed to participate in a prize fight against Garcia, at no time did he agree to engage in a bout against an individual who had taken a performance-enhancing drug," the lawsuit stated.

Haney, 26, also claimed Garcia committed fraud because he "represented that he had tried to make weight and failed." Garcia weighed 143.2 pounds for a fight contested at 140 for Haney's WBC junior welterweight title.

The fight proceeded only after Haney agreed to a deal following the weigh-in and Garcia was ineligible to win the title. Garcia, 26, later claimed he missed weight on purpose. Neither Haney nor Garcia have competed since their April fight.

"Haney would have never fought against a boxer who was positive for a PED," per the suit.

The suit also named Garcia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and Garcia's strength and conditioning coach, Dave "Scooter" Honig. Haney sought a full accounting of the event that includes evidence to support expenses. Haney was entitled to 47% of the event's profits.

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) is eligible for reinstatement in April.

It's a pick'em.

As much as Haney would want to put all the blame on Ryan coming in dirty and overweight - it wasn't the sole reason for the loss (even if it played it's part).

I think, Ryan just exposed those weaknesses and holes that Haney had for years. Like, for instance, inability to defend the left hook.

But what's somewhat lost is that Haney arguably won more rounds than Ryan in their 1st fight. We remember the knockdowns and Haney being on queer street. But in-between knockdowns, Ryan didn't do whole lot boxing-wise.

Same goes for Haney. But Devin was edging a lot of those non-knockdown rounds with just a jab. If Devin can avoid getting dropped (big "IF"), I'm not rulling out him taking a decision. Because I'm not sure Ryan will add something extra to his game.

Ryan showed tremendous hand speed. He was faster and more powerful. Was that down to weight, performance boosters, dunno.

He has got the speed and power to win.

DEVIN HANEY DOESN’T THINK ONE-YEAR SUSPENSION, $1.2 MILLION FINE WAS ENOUGH PUNISHMENT FOR RYAN GARCIA

NEW YORK – Devin Haney appreciates that his majority-decision defeat to Ryan Garcia was overturned.

The former undisputed lightweight champion can’t erase the memories of what happened to him in their grueling fight last April 20. At least, though, the lone loss on his professional record was removed once Garcia tested positive for ostarine, a substance banned by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

The 26-year-old Haney still feels Garcia got off relatively easily.

Having a performance-enhancing drug in his system when they fought was bad enough from Haney’s viewpoint. The fact that Garcia intentionally came in significantly higher, 3½ pounds, above their contracted weight of 140 pounds angers Garcia’s rival even more.

Haney and his father/trainer/manager, Bill Haney, could’ve handled Garcia’s weight issue differently by making Garcia come back to the New York State Athletic Commission’s scale last April 19. Haney instead accepted the financial penalty Garcia paid for coming in overweight and approached their 12-round fight as if Garcia wasn’t physically or mentally fit for that type of competition.

That turned out, of course, to be an underestimation of Garcia’s capabilities, despite his erratic behavior throughout that promotion.

Regardless, Haney will end exactly the same layoff as Garcia on Friday night when they face separate opponents at Times Square in Manhattan. Haney’s hiatus was self-imposed, whereas he doesn’t think Garcia should be allowed to return to the ring so soon – nearly 54 weeks after they fought at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“I definitely feel like if a guy could just get a one-year ban, take one year out the ring and pay a million dollars, when he is making a lotta millions, it’s nothing, at the end of the day,” Haney told The Ring. “But I do thank the New York State Athletic Commission for doing the right thing and overturning the decision [to a no-contest].

“But no, I think cheaters should get banned from the sport. Because, like I said, we could lose our life. This is not baseball. This is not basketball. This is not football. We’re putting our life on the line every time we step into that ring. So, you know, it could’ve went totally wrong in that fight.”

Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), an Oakland native who resides in Henderson, Nevada, is set to face Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), a former WBC/WBO 140-pound champ from Avenal, California, in a 12-round welterweight bout Friday night. DAZN Pay-Per-View will stream their co-feature immediately prior to another 12-round, 147-pound bout between Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC), of Victorville, California, and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KOs), of North Las Vegas, Nevada.

If Garcia and Haney win, they have agreed to fight again sometime in October. DraftKings lists Garcia as a 9-1 favorite and handicapped Haney, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked junior welterweight contender, as a 12-1 favorite.

A third 12-round match, which will pit Ring and WBO junior welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez against Arnold Barboza Jr., will be the second of four fights offered as part of The Ring’s “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves” show ($59.99 in the United States). Barboza (32-0, 11 KOs), of El Monte, California, is The Ring’s No. 3 contender for the 140-pound championship owned by Las Vegas’ Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs).

The Ring’s event Friday night can be bundled with DAZN Pay-Per-View’s show the next night for $89.99. Mexican legend Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) will defend his Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against Cuba’s William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) in the 12-round round main event Saturday night at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ryan looked Kinda skinny fat in there. I think he's better off going down to 140. He looked like a Smooth Swimmer build type of flabby'ish softish physique.

Now Rolly On the other hand, He looked Jacked. Rock Solid acclimation to the 147 Welter division. His physique is rather impressive. And Jim Lampley pointed that out more than once.

Imo, Ryan Garcia vs Josh Taylor, at 140, or maybe 143 catchweight would be very interesting.

As far as Rolly, I think it'd be interesting if he fought that guy that got Tko'd by Brian Norman a couple of months ago.
Edit: That bout was on 3/29/25. The Opponent:Derriek Cuevas. 27-2 record. 19 ko's. Tko-3 Won by Brian Norman Jr.
I think that Brian Norman would Probably likely Tko Rolly, probably between rounds 4-6. Norman Jr is Amazing.
Rolly is a fairly good, Sometimes exciting Brawler. Pretty good power and definitely a Strong fellow. He's kinda reminiscent to old time days boxers like Rocky Graziano. :box:

Haney Stops Garcia Lawsuit – Says He Didn’t Want It

Devin Haney has ended his Ryan Garcia lawsuit, which claimed physical injury, emotional distress, and reputational damage.

The lawsuit was filed in the aftermath of their controversial April 2024 fight. Garcia initially won via a majority decision where he sent Haney to the canvas three times. However, he entered the fight by missing the 140-lb weight limit, coming in over three pounds. The fight went ahead after Haney accepted to be compensated.

The no-contest, though, came as Ryan tested positive for Ostarine, as he was banned for a year. Haney ultimately was kept out of the ring for more than a year before returning to beat Jose Ramirez in May. The lawsuit received criticism initially with Tim Bradley calling Haney soft, urging him to move on. Now, Haney says he never wanted to file it, but rather it was his team.

Haney Reacts
“I would say that my team was [behind the lawsuit]. That wasn’t something . I’m a fighter — I want to get it back in the ring. I want to get it back in blood, and that was my mindset from the start to the end. I’ve always wanted to do a rematch. It was a f***ed-up situation for me and my team, because we got the short end of the stick.

“There was a guy that cheated and I was getting all the flack. I missed out on a lot of money, I missed out on a lot of opportunities for a guy who cheated me. But I wouldn’t have wanted to do it like that [sue Garcia], which I didn’t end up doing it like that. I didn’t go down that route. I said, ‘Listen, let’s fight. Forget that, forget any lawsuit, forget anything. Let’s settle it in the ring.’ That’s when we were scheduled to fight,” Haney said

Haney’s decision to drop the lawsuit is a step toward rebuilding his image. The lawsuit had become a major distraction, keeping the narrative focused on his most controversial performance rather than his future. This move allows him to reassert control over his career narrative, put the Garcia saga behind him, and fully concentrate on the significant fights that remain available.

While dropping the suit benefits Haney’s image, the initial legal action may be justified. Haney was not simply beaten; he was defeated by an illegal competitor, causing him to be floored three times. The lawsuit was a necessary step to recover millions in potential lost earnings. Dropping the lawsuit, regardless of his stated intent, means Haney forfeits any potential financial compensation.

A rematch at welterweight (with extra drug testing) would be an interesting fight to see what advantages Garcia had due to the PED's and the extra few pounds.
