Jaron Ennis vs Eimantas Stanionis unification “nearly finalized” for April 12th

Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis are reportedly very close to confirming an April date in Atlantic City

IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis may finally get the unification he’s long craved, as Keith Idec reports that he’s “nearly finalized” a deal to meet WBA titlist Eimantas Stanionis on April 12th in Atlantic City.

Mike Coppinger first brought word of these developments late last week. Per Idec, we can expect an official announcement this coming Friday.

Unable to secure a clash with his fellow champions, Ennis’ (33-0, 29 KO) 2024 campaign saw him run over David Avanesyan before taking a hard-fought decision over Karen Chukhadzhian in their November rematch. News soon emerged of a tantalizing bout with Vergil Ortiz Jr at 154, but Ennis elected to stay at welterweight, leaving Ortiz to prepare for Israil Madrimov next month instead.

Stanionis (15-0, 9 KO) has fought just once in nearly three years, a comfortable decision over fellow Olympian Gabriel Maestre that followed a long, fruitless quest to fight the aforementioned Ortiz. Still, there’s a strong argument to be made that he’s the best at 147 behind Ennis and has the aggressive style to produce a banger. Really hoping this one gets over the line.

Jaron Ennis-Eimantis Stanionis Nearly Finalized For April 12 At Boardwalk Hall In Atlantic City

Jaron Ennis will secure one of the welterweight title unification fights he wants unless negotiations unexpectedly take a turn for the worse in the coming days.

The Ring has learned that a deal is nearly complete for Philadelphia’s Ennis to battle WBA 147-pound champ Eimantas Stanionis on April 12 in a main event DAZN would stream worldwide. The probable site for this 12-round bout between Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs, 1 NC) and Stanionis (15-0, 9 KOs, 1 NC) is Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, less than an hour from the hometown arena where Ennis established himself as a draw during the last half of 2024.

ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger first reported that April is the targeted time frame for Ennis-Stanionis.

Ennis expressed in recent weeks to promoter Eddie Hearn that he wanted to fight Lithuania’s Stanionis somewhere other than Wells Fargo Center, home to the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s Flyers. The unbeaten IBF welterweight champ attracted an announced crowd of 14,119 there for his five-round stoppage of Russia’s David Avanesyan (31-5-1, 19 KOs) on July 13 and more than 11,000 for his unanimous-decision victory over Ukraine’s Karen Chukhadzhian (24-3, 13 KOs) in their 12-round rematch November 9.

The 27-year-old Ennis remains one of boxing’s most complete talents. He has drawn widespread criticism, however, for fighting Chukhadzhian a second time only 22 months after he shut out the unthreatening underdog on all three scorecards at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

Proposed fights for Ennis against rival Vergil Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs), who owns the WBC super welterweight title, and WBO welterweight champ Brian Norman Jr. (26-0, 20 KOs) haven’t materialized for various reasons, either.

Stanionis, 30, represented Lithuania in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He hasn’t been particularly active since he turned pro in April 2017, but industry insiders consider the durable boxer-puncher the most imposing opponent Ennis has agreed to fight in nearly nine years as a pro.

Assuming Stanionis faces Ennis on April 12, he’ll end almost a one-year layoff that night. Most recently, Stanionis out-classed Venezuela’s Gabriel Maestre (6-1-1, 5 KOs) on his way to a 12-round, unanimous points win last May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Jaron 'Boots' Ennis-Eimantas Stanionis confirmed for Atlantic City on April 12

Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis will unify two of the welterweight titles on April 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Ennis, 33-0 (29 KOs), of nearby Philadelphia will be making the second defense of his IBF welterweight title, while Stanionis, 15-0 (9 KOs), of Kaunas, Lithuania will be making his first defense of the WBA belt he was awarded when made full champion in 2025. Their fight will be broadcast live on DAZN.

Both fighters expressed that they had been hoping for a unification fight.

“This is the fight I’ve been waiting for,” said Ennis, 27. “I believe I was made for moments like this and on April 12 I will be making a big statement and you will see the very best of me. It’s time to shine, be great and collect those belts.”

"This is it – the moment I've been envisioning my entire life,” said Stanionis. “Every sacrifice, every ounce of sweat, it's all been for this fight. Jaron 'Boots' Ennis is a great fighter, but I'm ready to take him down. On April 12 in Atlantic City, I’ll show the world what I’m made of. This unification bout is my chance to prove I'm the king of the welterweight division, and there’s no way I'm letting this opportunity slip away. This moment is mine.”

April's fight is expected to be the biggest test yet for Ennis and Stanionis, 30. Both are in their primes and had been awaiting their marquee match-ups at championship level. Ennis’ road to the championship began in 2023, when he won the interim title via a decision over Karen Chukhadzhian. He was later elevated to full championship status when the IBF title was stripped from Terence Crawford.

Stanionis followed a similar route, having won the WBA’s “regular” belt in 2022, but he only became full champion in August 2024 after Crawford vacated.

“This is a simply brilliant fight,” said Matchroom's Eddie Hearn. “When we signed Boots, I said to him that we would deliver unifications for him, so it is great to get this over the line for Jaron, and I know that with the biggest fight of his career right in front of him, he is going to shine brighter than ever.

“Eimantas is a brilliant fighter, and this is without doubt the number one and number two in the division, and I could not wish for a better fight to promote our first event in the storied Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.”

Solid fight. Exactly what we need at 147 right now with 4 champions. Now just gotta get Barrios and Norman Jr involved in a fight eventually.

Shakhram Giyasov lined up for Jaron Ennis-Eimantas Stanionis undercard

Shakhram Giyasov will fight on the undercard of Jaron “Boots” Ennis-Eimantas Stanionis on April 12 in Atlantic City.

The 16-0 (7 KOs) welterweight is the mandatory challenger for Stanionis’ WBA title – which the Lithuanian will attempt to unify against the IBF champion Ennis – meaning Giyasov would be in line to face the winner.

Uzbekistan’s Giyasov, 31, will aim to show improvements after his last performance – a narrow split decision victory over Miguel Parra in July 2024. Matchroom’s chief executive Frank Smith confirmed the news that Giyasov will feature on the undercard of the appealing welterweight unification.

“Shakhram Giyasov will be on there as well,” Smith told BS. “Obviously the WBA mandatory for Stanionis, so he'll be on the card and a whole host of our young US talent.”

Smith also confirmed earlier in the week that the former featherweight champion Raymond Ford is also being lined up to feature.

Eimantas Stanionis: Beating Jaron Ennis will make me the top welterweight

WBA welterweight titleholder Eimantas Stanionis has landed the biggest fight of his career.

The 30-year-old from Lithuania will meet IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis in a unification fight set for April 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The unification bout would consolidate two of the four major belts with the other two champions in the division being the WBC belt holder Mario Barrios and WBO title holder Brian Norman Jnr.

Stanionis, who now trains in Los Angeles at Wild Card Boxing, spoke to BS via text to explain how the fight came to be.

“My team met and gave me two options: fight my mandatory or go after Boots,” Stanionis, 15-0 (9 KOs) told BS via text. “It was an easy decision, unify and go for greatness. The fans want to see the best fighters face each other and this is the perfect matchup. This fight was supposed to happen a few years ago, but it couldn’t be made. We’ve both been talking about fighting the best, so when the opportunity came, I jumped at it. This fight is the biggest fight of my life. A win over Jaron Ennis would place me as the top welterweight in boxing.”

Stanionis won a unanimous decision over Gabriel Maestre in May, which ended a two-year layoff. That fight was for the WBA regular title, which has since seen him elevated to outright title holder with Terence Crawford – the former undisputed champion of the division – moving up to junior middleweight. Previously, Stanionis had been scheduled multiple times to fight Vergil Ortiz Jnr in 2023, but that bout never came to fruition.

Ennis, 27, 33-0 (29 KOs), signed with Matchroom Boxing last year. He has subsequently fought twice. He stopped David Avanesyan in July and won a unanimous decision over Karen Chukhadzhian in November in a rematch of their fight from January 2023. Both fights took place at the Wells Fargo Center in Ennis’ hometown of Philadelphia. For Stanionis, the fight signals the start of his goal to become the undisputed champion of the welterweight division.

“My goal is to unify all the belts in the welterweight division and become the undisputed champion,” Stanionis said.

“That’s the ultimate goal for me right now. The more belts I collect, the closer I get to proving that I am the best in the division.”

RAYMOND FORD VS. EDWARD VAZQUEZ REMATCH POSSIBLE FOR ENNIS-STANIONIS CARD

DALTON Smith's growing legion of fans includes an unlikely former world champion, one two years younger and three weight divisions lighter but nonetheless eager to maximize his talents and retire before the sport's relentlessness diminishes his quality of life.

Former WBA featherweight world champion Raymond Ford (16-1-1, 8 KOs) was among the spectators watching Smith's stoppage win over France's Walid Ouizza from Las Vegas in a rare 12-hour boxing bonanza for DAZN. Having previously shared a card with Smith in Nottingham, the New Jersey southpaw shared thoughts after an emphatic first-round finish.

"I'd say 140, I don't know though. I don't want to be in boxing that long, want to retire around 29. Invest and travel, that's it. I want to still be able to talk when I'm older," he told DAZN's Chris Mannix when asked about the highest weight division he'd box at in future, and what he'd most like doing with his time after an early retirement.

"Don't rush out, Ray!" was the teasing response from his promoter, Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn and while they could laugh about it, there's a maturity to Ford's words that many around his age-group rarely exhibit in boxing circles.

Ford is ranked #5 by the WBC, #6 with the WBA and #7 with the IBF at 130-pounds and knows he'll need a few more victories before he can consider himself a firm fixture in the world title picture again.

The Ring caught up with Hearn last week and he was effusive in his praise for a fighter he's grown close with, having tracked the 25-year-old's progress on the amateur circuit and pouncing to sign him professionally after he opted against extending his amateur experience to represent Team USA at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics.
"You should always have a plan post-boxing, I was joking with him a little bit because I like to make sure you're not focusing on the end, you're focusing on now. He has so much ability, wants to fight Eduardo Nunez who I believe will become a world champion, O'Shaquie Foster, all those guys."

Nunez (27-1, 27 KOs) scored a stoppage win over Miguel Marriaga last August 31 on the undercard of Diego Pacheco's headline victory over Maciej Sulecki.

The IBF have formally ordered the Mexican to box Masanori Rikiishi (16-1, 11 KOs) for the recently-vacant junior lightweight title previously held by Anthony Cacace (23-1, 8 KOs) and while March 2 is the deadline to agree terms, there's an expectation they will avoid a purse bid in securing a spring date for that proposed bout.

O'Shaquie Foster (23-3, 12 KOs) meanwhile, reclaimed the WBC world junior lightweight strap controversially lost against Robson Conceicao in an immediate rematch last November 2.

The 31-year-old has called for a unification bout with Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) after the Mexican returned to his natural 130-pound weight and earned a repeat win over Oscar Valdez on December 7, seven months removed from an unsuccessful WBO title tilt against Denys Berinchyk at lightweight.

As far as Ford is concerned, he's already in a self-described pre-season camp and the competitive juices always flow when around the company he keeps. Shakur Stevenson has a world title defense later this month, Keyshawn Davis' maiden world championship opportunity unfolds the week prior while others continue keeping him hungry, striving for more greatness.

Having claimed Ring's 2024 Fight of the Year honors for his thrilling 12th-round knockout win over Otabek Kholmatov at the inaugural Ring awards show in London last month, Hearn hinted that his next matchup could see him settle some bad blood.

After attributing his split decision defeat by Nick Ball (21-0-1, 12 KOs) to one tight weight cut too many and pitching a dominant 10-round decision win on his super-featherweight debut against Orlando Gonzalez (23-3, 13 KOs), it appears a former foe could be next.

One-time world title challenger Edward Vazquez (17-2, 4 KOs) was unfortunate not to get the nod against Joe Cordina during their razor-thin Monte-Carlo headliner on a DAZN show in November 2023 and after two victories the following year, the Texan may have a chance to right a wrong from three years ago.

Many felt he did enough to win over ten rounds against Ford, though ultimately dropped a split decision during an entertaining clash between unbeaten featherweights in February 2022.

Another to have also watched Ford's progress as a highly-touted amateur, Vazquez would love an opportunity to avenge that defeat.

"There's a good chance Ford could box Vazquez, many felt he beat Ray and there's a lot of beef between them. If that happens, it'll be on the Jaron Ennis vs. Eimantas Stanionis undercard [April 12], we'll be announcing more information on it soon," Hearn revealed.

What's with this being for the "vacant BoxRec Lineal Welter" belt?

Never heard of this until I was looking up this weekend's fights on Boxrec. Noticed the HW boxrec title has been around since Fury vs Wlad & the LHW boxrec title was claimed by Bivol over Beterbiev recently. Is this going to be a new thing? What's the rules on a vacant boxrec title being given? Is there an actual belt?

It’s probably their lineal version. There’s no physical belt. They get a t-shirt

Here’s some excerpts of what Stanionis had to say below.

Stanionis on being the underdog against Ennis
“He’s like a big star in the US and for me it’s like I always was an underdog in America. When I was fighting I knew if I lose one fight I’ll pack my bags and go back to my country. So I was always going hard, like giving my all. And that’s the thing, that’s what motivates me, that’s what I want to do. It’s a big task but I’m ready to do this.”

On liking to fight in the pocket
“It’s always how I like to press my opponents, but it depends. I also have my skills, I have big amateur background so I can fight both ways. But I prefer to bang because the fans like to see that, you know. So I like to give the excitement to the fans.”

On Boots taking criticism for his last performance against Karen Chukhadzhian
“It was a good fight. People have like a big expectations from the talks ‘oh, he might fight this and that’ so that’s why I think, you know. It’s always somebody talks when you try to reach something, you know...I don’t take like nothing from one maybe not-so-good performance. It’s nothing, it happens for a fighter. Everybody can wake up and feel bad, it might not [be] your day today.”

On how long a fight against Boots has been on his radar
“Five years because 2020 they offered me to fight him twice. I said yes and that’s it.”

On if he thinks Boots team avoided making the fight until now
“Honestly, I don’t know if they turned down or not turned down, what happened, or my team — like I got different team before, now I have different one so it’s like I don’t know what happened at the moment. I can’t say nothing. I just know I said yes twice and that’s it.”

On whether he plans to get Boots out early or try to take this fight into the later rounds
“Boxing is like very tough sport and you don’t know what’s going on, what can happen. Like I said, it’s very unpredictable sport. So it’s going to be on the night. We’ll see April 12.”

On if he thinks he can stop Boots
“Every fighter I can stop, you know. It works both ways because it’s boxing but I know I can do everything. I’m training hard, I’m focused, I don’t have a fear and I like competition, that’s what drives me. So I want to do what people think is not possible.”

Jaron Ennis
“I’m ready to show out and put on a show and show the world why I’m the best and come Saturday night I’m going to take home all these belts,” said Ennis. “We expect him to do what he usually does. Come forward, throw a lot of jabs, punches and try to hook, a typical pressure fighter. I don’t think he can do much else other than that.”

“I’m definitely excited to fight at this iconic venue. One of my favorite fights to watch was Floyd [Mayweather] vs [Arturo]Gatti, and I’m excited about fighting in the same arena. Hopefully, I can put a historic moment during this fight just like that.”

Eimantas Stanionis
“It’s a big opportunity. I know Ennis is a very good fighter, but I came here to give it my all and the best shot I can put,” said Stanionis.

“I know they think they might knock me out. First of all, I’ve never been knocked out so we will see, but it can always be the first time. I will do my best on April 12 and didn’t come here for a walk in the park. I went into this camp with my most brutal training and I sacrificed a lot and left my family. My wife is pregnant, and my baby might come today or tomorrow. It’s been a lot of sacrifices that I have put because I love the sport and believe in myself so I will see you on April 12 and give all my heart.”

I was excited about this being a competitive fight with my only question marks knowing Stanoinis age 30 and not that many fights 15, I had heard rumors that Stanionis was good and avoided.

Also from two fights I have seen Ennis fight against Chukhadhzian they seemed like fights Ennis was a clear favorite going into fights except 2nd fight Chukhadhzian did surprisingly better.

But after listening to Teddy Atlas handicap fight, and seeing big betting odds favor Ennis like 9-1 favorite.

I am not as excited about this fight being competitive
