Some of those flyweight headliners were getting 5 grand if they were lucky.
Think back to the likes of Nicky and Jason Booth, Napa, Kelly and Culshaw.
In real terms, I reckon their purses were higher than Harris and Butler’s recently.
That British Flyweight title fight was only picked up by DAZN in the week before.
I’d agree that the guys at the higher end may earn better now (Saudi/Dazn) but those below that have less opportunities.
30-40 consistent shows a year, with 12 fights each, allowed boxers to be very active, from prospect level through to Area, National and higher honours.
It seems now we can go weeks without a decent show, then a bumper bill comes along (which of course I love!).
Maybe rose tinted spectacles and I am getting old, but the overall scene seemed healthier in the 90’s.
In addition to the big fights (Hatton & Calzaghe), most Fridays (or Saturdays) you could look forward to seeing a decent British level title fight featuring decent names like Richard Williams, Wayne Alexander, Froch coming through, Damaen Kelly, Howard Eastman, Scott Harrison etc.
You’d get another title fight on the card and watch a couple of prospects on their journey.

I don’t think current wealth is any indication of previous wealth, in boxing or any other field. Also, I’m not saying Napa got rich, just that he earned as well as Flyweights/Bantams now in real terms.

I think U.K. tv fighters started to be paid more than their commercial worth when Eddie went to DAZN and Shalom came to Sky.Frostieballs wrote: ↑24 Jan 2025, 19:50On what platform?maverick23 wrote: ↑24 Jan 2025, 10:50No - it had changed before that. The Saudi stuff has taken it to the next level.Frostieballs wrote: ↑24 Jan 2025, 08:33
The only thing that has changed that has been Saudi money.
Before that hit, you still had British Champions on purses that weren’t huge.
PPV has always been an exception.
Guys like Whittaker and Frazer Clarke (even Lauren Price) turned over at the perfect time to benefit from it and their guarantees are apparently massive. Hence why neither have been too active and the quality of the opposition has mostly been poor/cheap. Compare to AJ who fought something like 10 times in his first 15 months as a pro just fighting on undercards.
Before there were 3 main promoters and it was just Frank and Eddie they both kind of had their own areas of recruitment. Eddie very much going for the Olympic squad and Frank going after young, usually suited to the pros, amateurs.
