WBA orders Naoya Inoue to face Murodjon Akhmadaliev

Murodjon Akhmadaliev formerly held the WBA and IBF super bantamweight titles

Naoya Inoue’s planned September return will see him face arguably his best remaining foe at 122, as the WBA has ordered him to meet former unified champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev by September 25th.

The pair have until July 14th to come to terms and avoid a purse bid.

Most expected Inoue (27-0, 24 KO) to face IBF mandatory Sam Goodman his next time out, as the pair confronted each other in the ring after “The Monster’s” vicious knockout of Luis Nery last month. Goodman instead set up a July 10th fight with unheralded contender Chainoi Worawut with the expectation that he’ll fight Inoue on one of Japan’s traditional year-end shows, leaving the undisputed champ without a dance partner.

Enter Akhmadaliev (12-1, 9 KO), who vied with Stephen Fulton for the title of top super bantamweight before suffering a shock upset loss to Marlon Tapales last year. His return to action eight months later proved a return to form when he dismantled undefeated Kevin Gonzalez on the Bam Rodriguez vs. Sunny Edwards undercard.

Akhmadaliev is far and away the most unique super bantamweight elite that Inoue has yet to mulch. We’ll see whether Top Rank and Matchroom can hash things out over the next 30 days.

What a stupid thing to say.
Hearn should be "removed" from the internet for that nonsense.
Now I’d rather MJ not get the payday.

In the last 30 months MJ has a loss and 2 wins over top 75-50ish guys…(according to boxrec I don’t really know em…

In that time inoue has gone undisputed at 118 and 122 and has stoppage wins over Fulton, tapels and nery… plus a few more.

Murodjon Akhmadaliev: It’s ridiculous to hear Naoya Inoue’s excuses for avoiding me

Of course Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev wants to be identified as a world champion again, but more than that, he longs for the opportunity to step in the ring against undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue.

In a Monday interview with BS discussing his current position as an ignored WBA mandatory challenger to Japan’s four-division champion Inoue 29-0 (26 KOs), Akhmadaliev, 30, delivered heartfelt responses over his push to land the bout.

Akhmadaliev promoter Eddie Hearn, of Matchroom, said over the weekend that he expects the WBA to enforce its position and strip Inoue of his 122lbs belt after he knocked out replacement opponent Ye Joon Kim on Friday in Tokyo and appears headed to a spring US return bout against his WBC No. 1 contender, Alan David Picasso, of Mexico.

“I’ve been vocal about it: There are rules in boxing, and I want to fight him,” Akhmadaliev said. “I’m the mandatory. I’m a former unified champion. I want to fight the best. The best is Inoue. I don’t want to just get the title.

“For some reason, the fight is not happening and they’ve kept me frozen for almost two years. If he doesn’t want to fight, what can I do? I cannot make him fight me. If people demand this fight, maybe it will change something. I want to fight him and prove – I know myself, my skills, my level – that I know I can beat him.”

Akhmadaliev, 13-1 (10 KOs), lost his chance to fight Inoue in 2023 when Akhmadaliev was upset by Marlon Tapales by the odd scores of 118-110, 113-115, 113-115, with Tapales proceeding to get knocked out by Inoue eight months later.

Two victories later, Akhmadaliev is the WBA mandatory and first in line among the other sanctioning body No. 1s, but Inoue has shunned him.

“I don’t know what’s going on, I really don’t,” Akhmadaliev said. “Someone clearly doesn’t want this fight to happen, whether it’s him, his team, his promoters. I don’t know who does that. Usually, fighters will fight anyone, but definitely, someone doesn’t want this to happen, because I’ve been waiting for a very long time. Somehow they find a way to avoid the fight.

“He’s giving opportunities to other guys. OK, I don’t mind that, but there is a line that does not exist for them.”

Perhaps Inoue and/or his handlers are moving patiently to take the lesser foe in Picasso in the US before moving to a planned bout in Saudi Arabia later this year.

Asked if he was OK with that scenario or trusted it will happen, Akhmadaliev said, “I’m at the point, I don’t trust anyone. The great champions have always defended their belts. That’s the rules. I honored three mandatories in 18 months. It’s ridiculous to hear [Inoue’s excuses]. I’m ready to fight him anytime, anywhere. I’m ready to go to Las Vegas, Japan, Saudi Arabia. I’m ready to go anywhere to get my opportunity against the best fighter in the world.”

As Inoue moves to Picasso, Akhmadaliev, coming off a third-round TKO of Ricardo Espinoza Franco in December, said he would huddle with his team to determine his own next fight.

“I want to get in the ring,” Akhmadaliev said.

He insists he brings the skill set to defeat Inoue, known as “The Monster.”

“Inoue is a great fighter. I’ve never doubted his skills, his power, how fast and smart he is,” Akhmadaliev said. “But I’m not a pushover, either.

“Has he ever faced a 122lbs? I don’t think so. He’s fought all these guys moving up from 108, 112, 115, whatever. I’m a 122lbs. I am stronger than anyone he’s faced. I’m physically in my prime right now. I have a great chin. I have speed. There are layers to my skills. If I get an opportunity and this fight ever gets made, I’ll do my best to show the world how good I am.”

Inoue only has a couple good years left…

MJ, chocolatier, Estrada, nakatani… I love all them and want them asap.

Then featherweight can get it.

Goodman and casamero are acceptable…

"Removed from the pfp" like it's some tangible, real position.
Retarded.
I mean, I get that he's just saying it because he's Akhmadaliev's promoter, but still, retarded.
Inoue is one of the best, if not the best in the world pfp, and one of the greatest lower weight fighters of all time. He could fight Sam Goodman, TJ Doheny in a rematch and me for his next three fights and that wouldn't change.
At some point, once you've proven yourself it's proven and there's no need to continually satisfy the wishes of morons.

AKHMADALIEV MANAGER: WE'RE HAVING POSITIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH NAOYA INOUE'S TEAM

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA -- It was an unforgettable week for manager Vadim Kornilov, overseeing redemption as Dmitry Bivol avenged his first career defeat by Artur Beterbiev to become the undisputed light-heavyweight king. Later this year, a super-bantamweight stablemate could join him in rarefied air if recent positive discussions are to be believed.

Last month, WBA interim world champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev (13-1, 10 KOs) told The Ring of his frustration at being made to wait an extended period of time as undisputed titleholder Naoya Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs) outlines the roadmap for future opponents.

He remained optimistic that Turki Alalshikh, head of Riyadh Season and chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, will be the man to broker a deal between them given his ability to do similar work across various weight divisions.

Having needed just three rounds to dismantle Mexico's Ricardo Espinoza Franco (30-5, 25 KOs) in Matchroom's Monte-Carlo main event on December 14, the 30-year-old ended a year-long layoff with aplomb.

His promoter, Eddie Hearn, then delivered a passionate post-fight speech ringside when asked about whether he could deliver an Inoue matchup for the Uzbek.

"We've delivered him the fight, it's been called twice by the WBA. They paid for an exception the first time to duck MJ, the second time was cast iron in writing, he had to fight him, they found a way to avoid again.

"Naoya is a pound-for-pound legend and we respect him, an unbelievable fighter but there's only one in the division who can even compete, let alone beat him and that's MJ - we will do it in Japan or wherever, he should've fought him for undisputed. Let the best fight the best, either vacate or fight."

Speaking to Kornilov during a busy Last Crescendo fight week in the Saudi capital, he gave an encouraging update when asked about next steps for The Ring's No. 2-ranked divisional contender.

"Everything is actually clearing up now, we're beginning to have positive conversations with Inoue's team, there are a lot of talks about him fighting in May and then September 14 in Japan," he told The Ring.

Inoue is a rare example of an active world champion and given his four-fight plan for 2025, it's unlikely Akhmadaliev would go into a career-best opportunity without an interim bout too.

The Japanese star, who returned with a fourth-round knockout over Ye Joon Kim on January 24 after IBF/WBO mandatory Sam Goodman twice withdrew through injury, is tentatively set for a Las Vegas return against Alan David Picasso in May.

Assuming he's victorious in his fourth consecutive undisputed title defence and emerges injury-free, a long-awaited showdown back surrounded by home comforts could come three months later with a Riyadh Season debut concluding a busy year in December.

INOUE-CARDENAS SET FOR MAY 4 AT T-MOBILE ARENA IN LAS VEGAS, INOUE-AKHMADALIEV ON SEPTEMBER 14 IN TOKYO IF INOUE WINS

Naoya Inoue’s next two fights are set.

The Ring has learned that Inoue’s co-promoters, Hideyuki Ohashi and Bob Arum, finalized agreements Thursday for the Japanese superstar to defend his Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 122-pound championships against Ramon Cardenas and Murodjon Akhmadaliev during a four-month span in the spring and summer. If Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs) defeats San Antonio’s Cardenas on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, he will advance to another championship clash with Uzbekistan’s Akhmadaliev on September 14 at a venue to be announced in Tokyo.

Cardenas (26-1, 14 KOs) is the WBA’s No. 2, The Ring’s No. 9 and WBO’s No. 10 contender in the 122-pound division, but he is not ranked in the top 15 by the IBF or WBC. Akhmadaliev (13-1, 10 KOs) is the WBA’s interim super bantamweight champion and is ranked No. 2 among The Ring’s junior featherweight contenders.

Akhmadaliev’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, and manager, Vadim Kornilov, agreed with Ohashi Promotions and Arum’s Top Rank Inc. on a step-aside fee and an accompanying purse for Inoue to defend his titles against Akhmadaliev if the four-division champion beats Cardenas. The WBA could’ve stripped Inoue of its 122-pound crown had his team not reached an agreement to face Akhmadaliev if Inoue were to defeat Cardenas.

Akhmadaliev and his handlers have long contended that Inoue is avoiding him. “The Monster” has scoffed at Akhmadaliev’s claims because Inoue knocked out Filipino southpaw Marlon Tapales (39-4, 20 KOs) in the 10th round of the fight after Tapales upset Akhmadaliev by split decision in April 2023.

Inoue, 31, is ranked No. 2 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list. If Inoue continues to win, he has agreed to make his Riyadh Season debut sometime in December against an opponent to be determined in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Top Rank and ESPN partnered to air this rare Sunday night tripleheader that will feature Inoue-Cardenas because the following Monday is Cinco de Mayo and the last day of Golden Week in Japan, a period of public holidays. The card headlined by Inoue and Cardenas figures to attract thousands of Japanese and Mexican fans from outside of Las Vegas to the home arena of the NHL’s Golden Knights.

The Sunday show will also enable Top Rank to avoid competing with a pay-per-view event the previous night, May 3, which will showcase Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against William Scull in a 12-round fight for Alvarez’s Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles and Scull’s IBF belt. Mexico’s Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and Cuba’s Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) will square off at ANB Arena in Riyadh in a main event that will be officially announced Thursday at a press conference in New York.

Cardenas, 29, will be a huge underdog against Inoue. He has won 14 fights in a row since Danny Flores (then 14-9-1) upset him by majority decision in a 10-rounder in April 2017 in Monterrey, Mexico.

The left-handed Akhmadaliev, 30, most recently stopped Mexico’s Ricardo Espinoza (30-5, 25 KOs) in the third round December 14 in Monte Carlo.

NAOYA INOUE-MURODJON AKHMADALIEV DEAL SIGNED FOR SEPTEMBER IN TOKYO

A deal for pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue to defend his undisputed junior-featherweight titles against Murodjon Akhmadaliev later this year has been signed.

Inoue, The Ring's No. 2 P4P fighter, holds the Ring Magazine, WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF 122-pound belts, and is in action on Sunday, May 4 against Mexican Ramon Cardenas.

Assuming Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs), 32, comes through that fight, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, he will go on to fight Akhmadaliev, likely on September 14 in Tokyo, Japan.

Akhamdaliev's promoter Eddie Hearn posted on X: "Done deal, finally! Uzbek Power vs The Monster. Best fight in the division."

Akhmadaliev (13-1, 10 KOs) is The Ring's No. 2 junior-featherweight contender and is a former unified champion in the division.

He beat Daniel Roman by split decision in January 2020 to claim the WBA and IBF titles, but dropped them four fights later to Filipino Marlon Tapales.

Inoue, The Ring, WBC and WBO champ at the time, beat Tapales by 10th-round knockout to earn undisputed status in December 2023.

Since then, Inoue has picked up three consecutive stoppage victories over Luis Nery, TJ Doheny and Kim Ye-joon.

Akhmadaliev, on the other hand, has recovered from his defeat to Tapales by knocking out both Kevin Gonzalez and Ricardo Espinoza Franco in nondescript bouts.

Inoue recently told The Ring that after his fight with Cardenas this weekend, he would be pursuing clashes with Akhmadaliev, Englishman Nick Ball and compatriot Junto Nakatani, who is also a pound-for-pound star.

“I don't know if I will make it back to being the No. 1 pound for pound fighter in the world in this fight, but I've got fight dates in September, December and next year and hope to get Murodjon Akhmadaliev, Nick Ball, and Junto Nakatani to bring me up to No. 1,” he said.

"Cardenas is a beautiful fighter. He's an all-around good fighter, but for me, it's easy. No matter how he comes out, I think I have the advantage … I have nothing more than pure confidence for this fight.”

Naoya Inoue-Murodjon Akhmadaliev Tokyo showdown set for September 14

Naoya Inoue has stuck to his outlined plan for the year.

A showdown with Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev is up next for the reigning undisputed junior featherweight champion, provided he handles present-day business. With a win over Ramon Cardenas this Sunday, Inoue, 29-0 (26 KOs), and Akhmadaliev will then meet in a WBA title consolidation bout.

“Done deal, finally,” Eddie Hearn, whose Matchroom Boxing co-promotes Akhmadaliev along with World of Boxing, revealed on Thursday. “Uzbek Power vs. The Monster. Best fight in the division.”

Further details were not provided by Hearn or anyone else directly involved in the fight. However, BS has received confirmation that it will take place on September 14 in Tokyo.

Inoue first attempts his fourth defense of the undisputed junior featherweight crown, and fifth overall defense of the WBC and WBO belts, against San Antonio’s Cardenas, 26-1 (15 KOs). ESPN will air their scheduled 12 -round championship contest this Sunday from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Inoue-Akhmadaliev remains on course for the timeline set out by Inoue and promoter Hideyuki Ohashi, a former two-time strawweight champion before he founded Ohashi Boxing Gym (Ohashi Promotions). The ambitious plan calls for a minimum of three fights in 2025, with hopes of a fourth in December.

Inoue began the year with a fourth-round knockout of South Korea’s Ye Joon Kim, 21-3-2, (13 KOs), on January 24 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. Kim was a late replacement for Sam Goodman, Inoue’s IBF mandatory challenger, who suffered two injuries in less than a month and thus lost out on the chance to cash in his lottery ticket.

The fact that Inoue sought to first face Goodman never sat well with Akhmadaliev, 13-1 (10 KOs), the current interim WBA junior featherweight titlist.

The 2016 Olympic bronze medalist has been Inoue’s mandatory since a Dec. 2023 knockout win over Kevin Gonzalez in Glendale, Arizona. Inoue-Akhmadaliev was twice ordered by the WBA in 2024.

On both occasions, concessions were made for Inoue to face another opponent.

Inoue was first permitted to face TJ Doheny in a voluntary title defense, despite the fact that his ordered mandatory with Akhmadaliev was due to head to a purse bid hearing. Their clash last September saw Inoue prevail via seventh-round knockout, but his team never bothered to revisit plans to face the Uzbek southpaw.

A consolation prize was offered to Akhmadaliev in the form of an interim title fight. He made the most of it, as he comprehensively beat Ricardo Espinoza last Dec. 14 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Inoue was initially due to face Goodman 10 days later, but the event was postponed by exactly one month due to a cut suffered by the unbeaten Aussie. A repeat occurrence just a few weeks later prompted Inoue to proceed with the voluntary defense against Kim, along with aggressive plans to become the most active male champion in the sport with four potential fights in 2025.

Akhmadaliev’s name was mentioned as part of that plan, though not the primary target. It led to another round of interviews conducted by Hearn to keep his fighter’s name in the spotlight, even if not in the ring.

“I’ve seen the interviews that Eddie held after [Inoue’s] last fight,” Akhmadaliev previously told BS. “It’s not like I spend all my time online, but I heard what he said and he is my co-promoter for a reason. He does a great job promoting my name.”

Akhmadaliev has not fought since his abovementioned win over Espinoza. There was loose talk of his landing on this weekend’s undercard, though such rumors were immediately dismissed.

Instead, the 30-year-old southpaw will become the sport’s most interested observer, given what’s at stake for his immediate future.
