IBF orders Anthony Cacace to face mandatory challenger Eduardo Nunez

Eduardo Nunez stopped Shavkat Rakhimov in a final eliminator this past February

Matchroom Boxing will get a shot at reclaiming the IBF super featherweight title in the near future, as the IBF has ordered newly crowned champion Anthony Cacace to face mandatory challenger Eduardo Nunez. The pair have until June 22nd to come to terms.

The obligation to face Nunez (27-1, 27 KO) came with the hardware, as “Sugar” overpowered former two-time title challenger Shavkat Rakhimov in a final eliminator this past February. The bout doesn’t appear on his BoxRec page by virtue of coming on an IBA show, but it was a sanctioned pro fight and legit enough for the IBF, so I’m giving him credit for the win and knockout.

Queensberry Promotions’ Cacace (22-1, 8 KO) just straight-up mauled reigning titlist Joe Cordina last weekend, hurting him with a shot on the break in the third and pouring on the punishment to force a stoppage five rounds later. It’s probably in his best interest to avoid that sort of fight with the brick-fisted Nunez, but from an entertainment perspective, I sure hope he doesn’t.

The IBF stated, "the Anthony Cacace vs. Eduardo Nunez [an IBF junior lightweight mandatory title defense] and the Agit Kabayal vs. Martin Bakole [an IBF heavyweight final eliminator] purse bids have been rescheduled for Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 12:00PM Eastern Time."

On September 25, 2024 the IBF ordered Cacace of Ireland, to make a mandatory title defense against Nunez. Cacace (23-1) won the IBF title against Joe Cordina in May and subsequently defeated Josh Warrington in September. He also holds the IBO title. Nunez, from Mexico, is 27-1 with 27 KOs. His only fight this year was a stoppage win over faded contender Miguel Marriaga. The IBF wanted negotiations for Cacace-Nunez to be concluded by October 24th but an agreement was not made within the time frame allowed.

It's pretty simple regards to money. If cacace has turned down an offer for the fight take it to the purse bid. Cacace will get 75% of the pot. If he deems the money poor he has a choice to make fight or vacate

One thing about Nunez's record that puzzles me, & it shouldn't but I'm just a pedantic bloke sometimes, is that his one loss was against a career flyweight who fought at 113 a few months before meeting Nunez then again at 113 a few months after beating Nunez.

But for Nunez he's up at 125 3/4, wins a narrow decision then goes back to being a journeyman.

So apart from that one overweight Flyweight he KOs everyone he fights.

I know I am over thinking this but I want a bloody explanation.

Initially I was inclined to agree that essentially he's saying "Good chance I lose here so better off keeping my current market value and earning for an easier fight".

But given that he is 35 and Nunez despite the good record is quite unknown and the payday might not be so good and a fight against a more popular opponent might prove more lucrative. I don't necessarily agree with it I think champions should defend their belts and not just chase the money but I can understand his actions.

Interestingly Leigh Wood also vacated the WBA didn't he? Shows how valuable current "world" titles are doesn't it?

In coming cacace v wood.. Question is where and who's putting up the money. Is it that big a fight???

It's probably a good business decision but I'm not a fighters accountant. Take the mandatory and then defend the title in a voluntary. I don't think he fancied the Nunez fight at all. He's also not that big of a name to be operating without a world title and getting a lot of interest in his fights. Being a defending world champ was his selling point at this stage. But if he thinks he can't beat Nunes, or thinks it's not worth the risk, and he's sure he will make better money elsewhere then who am I to criticise. The value of world titles has been degraded by the way the corrupt sanctioning bodies just make up titles anyway. It's just very strange to see someone vacating a world title. Perhaps that says something about the sport.

Massive duck. Wanted nothing to do with Nunez. Hearn called it all along he wouldn't take the fight. He should have vacated 3 months ago so he didn't waste everyone's time. Never defended the title and dropped rather than face his mandatory.
