Matchroom set to return Down Under with March 22 show in Sydney

A show on March 22 in Sydney, Australia, will feature WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson, former lightweight champion George Kambosos, heavyweight hope Teremoana Jnr and WBA bantamweight Cherneka Johnson.

It will be the first time 31-year-old Kambosos, 21-3 (10 KOs), has boxed since his May loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko in Perth. Southpaw Nicolson is 12-0 (1 KO), and she wrote on her social media: “It’s official. My return Down Under as world champion is eight weeks away. Sydney March 22.”

Nicolson last fought scoring a resounding win over Raven Chapman in October in Saudi Arabia.

Former Olympian and 6-0 (6 KOs) prospect Teremoana Jnr, who blitzed overmatch Osasu Otobo in 57 seconds last month, will have his second outing of the year while 16-2 (6 KOs) WBA bantamweight champion is also scheduled to box.

More details will be announced for the card next week.

Yordan is the opponent.

I believe Crolla fought him once upon a time.

GEORGE KAMBOSOS TO FIGHT DAUD YORDAN MARCH 22 AT QUDOS BANK ARENA IN SYDNEY

George Kambosos Jr. will be heavily favored to win his first fight in eight years in his hometown of Sydney.

The Ring has learned that the Australian star will square off against Indonesia’s Daud Yordan in a 10-round junior welterweight match March 22 at Qudos Bank Arena. DAZN will stream Kambosos-Yordan worldwide as a main event.

Yordan (43-4, 31 KOs) has won five fights in a row, all by knockout or technical knockout. He is 37, however, and has boxed only five times since he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to England’s Anthony Crolla six years ago in their fight for Crolla’s WBA lightweight title.

Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) will compete for the first time March 22 since his longtime promoter, Lou DiBella, partnered with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing on handling his career.

The plan DiBella and Hearn originally formed for Kambosos was for him to challenge IBF junior welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins in June in New York if he were to win March 22.

Brooklyn’s Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) might instead box WBO junior welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) next in a title unification fight for The Ring belt, which Lopez possesses, and their IBF and WBO crowns. Kambosos could face the Lopez-Hitchins winner later this year if they fight late in the spring or early in the summer.

Top Rank founder Bob Arum, Lopez’s longtime promoter, confirmed to The Ring that Lopez was offered a three-fight deal to appear on Riyadh Season cards organized by Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring. Lopez and Alalshikh met numerous times in London earlier this month to discuss possibly partnering with Top Rank.

Lopez, 27, also announced last week that he joined forces with new co-managers, Mike Borao and Keith Connolly.

Kambosos, 31, is set to box in Sydney, Australia’s most populous city, for the first time since he beat Brandon Ogilvie (then 17-1-1) by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder in December 2016 at Luna Park. He has won only one of his four fights since he upset Lopez by split decision in November 2021 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Former undisputed lightweight champ Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) dominated Kambosos in back-to-back 12-round, 135-pound title fights that he won by unanimous decision in 2022. Kambosos edged English southpaw Maxi Hughes (28-7-2, 6 KOs) by majority decision in his first fight following his second defeat to Haney in July 2023.

Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) beat Kambosos by 11th-round TKO in his last match May 12 at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. Lomachenko won the then-vacant IBF lightweight title that night.

Press Release

Former world lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. (pictured) gets his long-awaited Australian homecoming on Saturday, March 22nd against Daud Yordan of Indonesia – live worldwide on DAZN. Kambosos will move up to the junior welterweight division on a huge card at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena which features two women’s title bouts with Skye Nicolson and Cherneka ‘Sugar’ Johnson looking to successfully defend their respective crowns on home soil. Ex-Olympic heavyweight Teremoana Teremoana will bid for his seventh successive stoppage.

Kambosos Jr (21-3, 10 KOs) faces former two-weight IBO champion Yordan (43-4, 31 KOs) in the main event, looking to lay down a marker in one of the sport’s most exciting divisions. The 31-year old – who captured world honors by beating Teofimo Lopez in 2021 – has shared the ring with the likes of Devin Haney, Maxi Hughes and Lee Selby and returns to the ring for the first time since his loss last May with the legendary Vasyl Lomachenko.

Yordan promises another stern test for Kambosos and is no stranger to fight fans, having previously held IBO titles at lightweight and featherweight and succumbing to a points defeat by Anthony Crolla in Manchester back in 2018.

Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn said: “This a brilliant card, headlined by the ferocious George Kambosos Jr in his hometown of Sydney. He’s a dangerous man and he will be in the mix of World Title conversations soon enough now he’s in the 140-pound division. There are two tremendous women’s world championship fights too, as Skye Nicolson defends her WBC featherweight crown against a tough, mandatory in Tiara Brown, plus Cherneka Johnson and Nina Hughes get the chance to go again for the WBA bantamweight belt.

“Big, bruising Heavyweight Teremoana Teremoana will be out to put on another knockout performance in front of his home fans, and much more, in what promises to be an unbelievable night of boxing Down Under.”

Kambosos Jr said: “Eight long years on the road, and finally I get to fight back in my hometown of Sydney, Australia.

“Moving up and having my 140-pound debut in front of my fans at a sold-out Sydney arena is the return I have always wanted. This is not just a fight; it’s an opportunity to inspire and give back to my loyal fans and to the community that has stuck by me all these years, the wait is now over. I will be facing a veteran of the sport and a fierce competitor, former two-time IBO champion and WBA title challenger Duad Yordan, ‘The Boxing Senator’, from Indonesia. The Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney will set the stage for me to make a statement return in front of my vocal hometown fans. I see this is as a testament to resilience, a celebration of my homecoming, expect fireworks and see you all March 22nd.”

Lou DiBella, Kambosos' co-promoter added: “I am excited to team up with Matchroom Boxing and TEG Sport to bring ‘Ferocious’ George Kambosos Jr. back to his hometown in Sydney where he will face former world champion Daud Yordan on March 22nd at the Qudos Bank Arena. This is a tremendous style matchup between two come-forward pressure fighters. Yordan is no stranger Down Under with three wins on Australian soil, but George is ready to unleash his warrior spirit once again to put on a sensational performance in his junior welterweight debut."

‘I will end his career’: Daud Yordan calls George Kambosos ‘a nobody,’ vows to KO him

Daud Yordan says he’ll end George Kambosos Jr’s career on March 22 in Australia.

Daud Yordan says he’ll end George Kambosos Jr’s career when the two meet on Mar. 22 in Sydney, Australia, which will be Kambosos’ first fight in his home city since 2016.

“George is a nobody. This will be his fourth loss (in Australia) in a row,” Yordan said. “I will KO him and end his career. ... George is going to get a boxing lesson like a child learning to walk for the first time.”

The 37-year-old Yordan (43-4, 31 KO) will come in from Indonesia for what will be just his fourth fight this decade and second since 2022. Now nicknamed “The Boxing Senator” — because, you guessed it, he is a Senator in Indonesia — was last seen by most fans outside of Indonesia or Thailand in a 2018 loss to Anthony Crolla in Manchester, England.

Kambosos’ team did quickly respond on social media through his Ferocious Promotions page, commenting, “Tough talk from the Senator. Seems a little upset this morning! The bill must (have) not got passed. Yordan thinks he’s Devin Haney or Vasiliy Lomachenko. Settle, Senator, settle.”

Kambosos (21-3, 10 KO) is 1-3 in his last four fights, with two losses to Haney and one to Lomachenko, broken up by a controversial win over Maxi Hughes, which took place in Oklahoma in the summer of 2023.

He’ll be a strong favorite in the fight even with his recent form, and the bout is his attempt to join the 140 lb contenders after closing out his lightweight run in rocky fashion. At 31, Kambosos has time on paper, but will be looking to get a move on if he plans to challenge for world titles at the new weight.

Kambosos also can’t afford to simply look past Yordan, either; until proven otherwise, the veteran should be taken as tough and motivated, though he is really a natural featherweight whose biggest fights came well over a decade ago in 2010 and 2011 losses to Celestino Caballero and Chris John, both of whom are long retired.

That's terrible. He's only won one fight since Lopez & he lost that in many peoples eyes.

Fighting an old bloke whose heyday was 14 years ago shouldn't get him any shot.

It’s what Hearn said..

They’d make it a voluntary Cus he promotes them both.

No way is this a final eliminator.

George Kambosos promises there is no Rocky story for late-sub Jake Wyllie

Australian Jake Wyllie has stepped up to replace Daud Yordan against George Kambosos on Saturday.

Indonesian veteran Yordan was today withdrawn on medical grounds after going to a hospital at home and that has allowed No Limit Boxing’s Wyllie to come in.

The 24-year-old puncher from Queensland will now top the bill at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.

“This is what dreams are made of,” said Wyllie. “I’d already arranged tickets to come watch on Saturday and now I’m fighting in the main event,” said the Australian super lightweight champion, who is 16-1-0, 15 KOs.

“I am ready to showcase all the hard work I have been putting in over the last three months, no matter who the opponent is,” said Kambosos, 21-3-0, 10 KOs.

“Boxing is unpredictable and it is very unfortunate to have Daud Yordan medically pull out, five days before the event, but the ‘Ferocious’ show goes on because there is no show without me.

“Victory is the only thing on my mind, no matter what, and it sets up my 140-pound world title shot next. I want to give a good local Aussie kid a shot. Jake Wyllie, 16-1, 15 KOs, stands out. He is the current Australian 140 national champion, the only one that hasn’t been disrespectful for a payday, and I like how he has gone about his business in the boxing world.

“So, I’m giving Jake the ‘Rocky’ shot. The opportunity, but that’s where it ends. This is not a Rocky movie, don’t get it twisted, there is no happy ending. A ‘Ferocious’ statement is what you’ll see on Saturday night. Victory by any means.”

“First and foremost, we wish Daud Yordan a speedy recovery,” said event promoter Eddie Hearn. “Now young Jake Wyllie comes in at short notice with a life changing opportunity to shock the world and wreck George Kambosos Jr’s plans.

“He is a dangerous puncher with a rising reputation as a stoppage sensation, so expect fireworks this Saturday at the Qudos Bank Arena."

It does seem like there have been more as of late, yes.
I don't know anything about Wyllie, but the record isn't awe inspiring. Was stopped by an 0-2 fighter two years ago. He is young at least. I don't know anything about Aussie boxing. I mean, I don't know anything about any boxing most around here would probably say, but even less about Aussie boxing.
