"Dandy"Dick Sadler(trainer of Archie Moore,Liston,G.Foreman)

Post by Brutu »

Anyone know anything about his career?
I had read he once worked in vaudville.
Whats was his background to be able to train fighters?
He started training Archie Moore around 1960,then trained Sonny Liston
from late 1967 up until the Leotis Martin fight, then on to
George Foreman.

I do believe in dr ferdie pacceccos book "the fight doctor" that best pointed out...Saddler was in Formans corner 4 "The Rumble In The Jungle" Accorccing 2 George, Saddler slipped him a mickey. The fight doctor quipped to Ali about saddler suddenly appearing in Alis corner vs Norten 2 years later and Ali got a bit hyper-nasty-testy about it.

A very strange sanrio 2 b sure!!!

If you watch the Ali vrs Wepner fight which of course was the Ali's first title defense after defeating George Foreman.
Dick Sadler is in Ali's corner, maybe as a second.
That doesnt look good in any book.

- Going through volumes of Ali bios over the years, Saddler's name pops up as a good friend of team Ali. Supposedly he was key in negotiations with the team and was quoted as delivering a game plan on how to beat George.

Who knows, thousands of fighters in history sold out by shady managers and trainers, so George in a long line of complainants. Only George really knows if he was drugged. I tend to think he believes he was, but rather enjoyed finally being able to be magnanimous in defeat now that he's secure in his own legacy.

Dick Sadler had a brief professional boxing career before World War II. During the War, he was a boxing instructor in the Army and trained amateur boxers. After the war, he went into the pro ranks as a manager and trainer.

He was a musician in the years before the War, but I don't know if he played vaudeville.

I did not know Sadler personally, but he was very good friends with a colleague of mine. The story I heard was that Sadler and Foreman never got along very well (I don't know why). When Foreman lost to Ali, they had a big blow-up and parted company. Foreman blamed Sadler for the loss; Sadler blamed all the screwing Foreman did in Africa. Dick also said that Foreman stiffed him by writing him a bad check, and then never made good on it.

I think after his blow-up with Foreman, Sadler felt free to work with whomever he chose. I personally don't see anything nefarious about Sadler being in Ali's corner. Although anything is possible, nothing I ever heard about Sadler indicated he was anything but loyal to his fighters.

Sadler had a reputation as a very, very good trainer. Not so much as a manager, although he did take Freddie Little to the junior middleweight title, and got a welterweight title shot for Charlie Shipes.

Sadler's obit -- much of this I ahve been able to confirm, except for his appearing in the "our Gang" film.

-- Mike DeLisa

PS -- If you want about 500 obits, I still have a few copies of my scrapbookbook "Who Lies There?" for $25 postpaid:

Sadler, famed ring trainer, dies at 88 June 4, 2003

Dick Sadler, a tap-dancing, piano-tinkling, one-time hobo who trained some of the greatest fighters of the modern era, died in his sleep Tuesday in a Hayward nursing home. He was 88.

Sadler trained four world heavyweight champions: George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston, and light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore.

Sadler also handled junior middleweight champion Freddie Little and Oakland's Charlie Shipes, who fought for the world welterweight title.

"He's the best trainer I ever saw," Shipes said Wednesday from his home in Houston. "He didn't have the publicity of some other trainers, but he knew the boxing game well."

Sadler, who moved to Hayward in 1939, was a boxing personality who seemed like a character out of a Damon Runyon novel.

Born in poverty in Columbus, Ohio, Sadler in 1932 rode the rails out west on top of a boxcar with 18 cents in his pocket. "He came to Los Angeles where he tap-danced in an 'Our Gang' movie," said Louise "Babe" Sadler, who was married to Sadler for 66 years.

Charles R. "Dick" Sadler played the piano, drums and saxophone, teaching himself to play all three, according to his wife. Sadler also fought as a lightweight from 1934 to 1940, then began training fighters in the Army during World War II. After the war, he became a professional trainer and manager, mixing discipline with humor.

Sadler had two "firsts" in boxing. He was the first trainer to work with three Olympic gold medalists (Foreman, Ali, Frazier) who became world heavyweight champions. And Sadler was the first African American to manage a heavyweight champion (Foreman) by himself.

Sadler also said he was the first black resident in Hayward, and maybe its first prominent black businessman as he owned the Doric Motel.

He had a charitable heart. His boxers raised money to help build boys clubs and centers for mentally disadvantaged children. Sadler also personally made sure that 150 Vietnamese refugees would be housed in Hayward.

Sadler was a victim of Alzheimer's, which affected a reunion he had with Foreman earlier this year.

Dick liked all his fighters except George Foreman, said Babe Sadler. He still owes Dick $25,000. He wrote Dick a check, and it bounced. George did visit Dick four or five months ago. Dick didn't know him.

Sadler also is survived by a daughter, Sharla Sadler of Hayward. There will be no funeral service. Sadler donated his body to science.

If you read George Foreman's autobigraphy,he writes that Dick Sadler did buisness deals behind Foreman's back, like selling a percentage of Foremans future earnings even before he became champ, for literally chump change.
They were detained in Venuzeula after the Norton fight because Sadler didnt pay some taxes and stuff.
I always thought it was kind of strange when you saw Foreman punching the heavy bag in Zaire,Dick Sadler was holding it for him.
Since George Foreman is 6'4" and Dick Sadler 5'4".

I dont think Joe Frazier even mentioned Sadler's name in his autobigraphy.
Dick Sadler did briefly help train Muhammad Ali with Archie Moore at the Salt Mine,
just before Ali turned pro.
They wanted Ali to fight in a defensive style like Archie Moore, but Ali wanted to fight like Sugar Ray Robinson,so it didnt work out.

Afew odds and ends.

I read somewhere where George Foreman also claimed that Sadler told him to stay down on the canvas while the ref was giving him a quick count in Zaire.

Apparently Dick Sadler went back to singing at night clubs for a while after around the time Archie Moore retired.

Is that Dick Sadler next to Ali in the ring when they raise Ali's hand after the fight in Lewiston Maine?

In his 1960 autobiography, Archie Moore said Dick Sadler had been a former fighter
http://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/218719
i also read somewhere that Dick Sadler had been a protege of Doc Kearns
but not clear if that was before Kearns became Archie Moores manager around 1951.

Dick Sadler had also helped train (or at least worked his corner) Charlie Powell (former NFL Player) when he turned to Boxing in the late 1950's.

Anyone here know of the location in Haywood (a few miles South of Oakland) in California
of the gym that Dick Sadler had trained Sonny Liston and George Foreman at in the late 1960's and early 1970's ?
I had read it was at the Boys and Girls Club in Haywood but do not know if it still exists.
Reportedly when George Foreman moved to Haywood at some point he lived on the 27000 block
of Melbourne Avenue in the "lovely Paloma Cia Village"

I just ran his name through the papers. When he was 82 he knocked out a young man who charged at him following a fender bender. When the guy awoke, he apologized.

was it Dick Sadler or Charlie Shipes who knocked him out ?
BTW in one of Archie Moor'es autobiographies,
he refers to Charlie Shipes as "Charlie Shanks".

BTW Dick Sadler was world featherweight and junior lightweight champion' Sandy Saddler's cousin.
Sandy Saddler first met Archie Moore when Moore came to NYC in the 1940's
to train at Stillman's Gym.
they were friends to the end.
Dick Sadler was in Archie Moore's corner at least as far back as 1958 for the first fight with Yvonne Durelle.
