Callum Walsh to headline St. Patrick’s Day in New York City for second straight year

Callum Walsh will be back in the top slot in New York City this March, continuing an annual tradition of boxing taking place in the Big Apple on or around St. Patrick’s Day and the city’s annual parade.

Walsh’s promoter, Tom Loeffler of 360 Promotions, had mentioned the plan in an interview weeks ago. Now he’s confirmed it: Walsh will fight on Sunday, March 16 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. No opponent has been selected yet.

“For everyone coming in for the parade, they’ll be able to come see Callum Walsh on Sunday and then go to the parade on Monday,” Loeffler said in an interview with Randy Gordon and Gerry Cooney, the hosts of At the Fights on SiriusXM.

Walsh, a 23-year-old junior middleweight prospect from Cork, Ireland, is 12-0 (10 KOs) and coming off a second-round knockout of the 22-2-1 Przemyslaw Runowski in September. Walsh lives these days in Hollywood, where he is trained by Freddie Roach.

This will be Walsh’s fourth St. Patrick’s Day fight overall, and his third appearance at Madison Square Garden’s small room.

Walsh turned pro in December 2021 and had his second bout on St. Patrick’s Day in 2022, though that was deep on the undercard of a show in Montebello, California.

On the day before St. Patrick’s Day in 2023, Walsh performed in a main event in the much more fitting locale of Boston, Massachusetts, defeating Wesley Tucker. He headlined at the Theater at Madison Square Garden for a pair of victories over Ismael Villarreal in November 2023 and over Dauren Yeleussinov two days before St. Patrick’s Day in March 2024.

“We just want to keep Callum busy, want to keep him learning,” Loeffler said. “He’s young, only 23 years old, but he’s making big waves as a young star in boxing.”

Callum Walsh vs. Dean Sutherland official for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend in New York City

Callum Walsh will take on Dean Sutherland on Sunday, March 16 – the day before St. Patrick’s Day – in the main event at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, according to 360 Promotions.

The show will air on UFC Fight Pass.

Walsh, 12-0 (10 KOs), is a 23-year-old junior middleweight prospect originally from Cork, Ireland. Although Walsh lives these days in Hollywood, California, where he is trained by Freddie Roach, his nationality makes him an ideal headliner for shows timed to align with the Irish holiday.

Walsh’s second bout was on St. Patrick’s Day in 2022 as the co-headliner of a show in Montebello, California. On the day before St. Patrick’s Day in 2023, Walsh performed in a main event in the much more fitting locale of Boston, Massachusetts, defeating Wesley Tucker.

This will be Walsh’s second straight year doing so in New York City. He headlined at the Theater at Madison Square Garden for a victory over Dauren Yeleussinov two days before St. Patrick’s Day in March 2024.

Since then, Walsh has notched a pair of second-round knockouts, taking out Carlos Ortiz Cervantes in June and Przemyslaw Runowski in September. He is currently ranked No. 6 by the IBF and No. 7 by the WBC.

Sutherland, 19-1 (7 KOs), is an unranked 26-year-old from Aberdeen, Scotland. His lone loss came in November 2022, when he was stopped in five rounds by the 14-3 Louis Greene. Sutherland has notched six wins since.

The main event will be supported by at least four undercard bouts also featuring Irish fighters: including Emmet Brennan, Kevin Cronin,Feargal McCrory, Thomas Carty and Donagh Keary.

Here are the fights currently scheduled for the undercard:

Light heavyweights – 10 rounds
Emmet Brennan, 5-0 (1 KO), vs. Kevin Cronin, 9-2-1 (5 KOs), in a rematch of a fight Cronin won in September via split decision

Junior lightweights – 10 rounds
Feargal McCrory, 16-1 (8 KOs), vs. Brandon Leon Benitez, 21-3 (9 KOs)

Heavyweights – 8 rounds
Thomas Carty, 10-0 (9 KOs), vs. Dajuan Calloway, 10-3 (8 KOs)

Junior welterweights – 8 rounds
Cletus Seldin, 28-1 (23 KOs), vs. Issouf Kinda, 20-6 (9 KOs)

Featherweights – 4 rounds
Donagh Keary (0-0, 0 KOs) vs. TBA

Decent looking card. Can’t wait to tune in. Interested to see how McCrory does after the Roach loss now that Roach’s star has risen after the Davis fight.

Irish Ayes: Callum Walsh blasts out Dean Sutherland inside one round

Callum Walsh filed his entry for 2025 Knockout of the Year on Sunday night, putting Dean Sutherland out cold at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Walsh, 13-0 (11 KOs), put his Scottish opponent out with a left hand followed by a right hook that folded up Sutherland, 19-2 (7 KOs). The fight was stopped by referee Ricky Gonzalez – no count necessary – at 2:45 of the first round.

The fight was the most explosive performance for Walsh, a 24-year-old from Cork, Ireland, at Madison Square Garden, where he has fought on St. Patrick’s Day weekend for the past two years.

It was clear from the opening bell that Sutherland, 26, of Aberdeen, Scotland, was having a tough time wearing the punches of Walsh, who is trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach. Sutherland’s head snapped in every direction each time Walsh connected, whether it was a jab or a hook or a cross. Sutherland was the aggressor for most of the brief fight, though he was not difficult to find as his head never moved unless Walsh moved it for him.

“He was a great opponent,” Walsh said. “I know at this weight every opponent is going to be tough, and I keep getting stronger and better. I am destined to be one the best fighters in the world.”

The knockout is the fourth straight for Walsh, whose past two fights ended in the second round.

Promoter Tom Loeffler says he is planning on bringing Walsh back in July on a card in Los Angeles.

“That’s the great thing about UFC Fight Pass – we have all the dates mapped out,” Loeffler said. “That means we can plan the arenas and plan the promotion properly.”

Loeffler, who admits he was surprised by Walsh’s explosive, early finish, says the plan isn’t to match the fighter yet with Xander Zayas, adding that he hopes to make that fight for next year.

“They’re both undefeated, they can both build their legacy, build their fan base,” Loeffler said. “I think that fight would be perfect for upstairs in the big arena.”

Walsh says he doesn’t have to wait that long to get back into the ring.

“I could fight again tonight. I could fight next week,” he said. “Where’s Dana White? Nobody beats the Irish! Especially on St. Patty’s Day!”

The fight headlined a card that aired live on UFC Fight Pass and was promoted by 360 Promotions.

He blew his knee out. He was moving and it just went. He fell over twice and got up, the referee ruling them as slips. Knee was buckling every time he moved. It was awful. I'd say he's going to be out of action for a spell. Shades of Joe Ward.
