Enjoyable read in this week's BN with Scrap Iron Ryan but slightly mystified that given the feature is called 'Where Are They Now?', we somehow get through the entire interview none the wiser

I found out he's 60 now and still wears a flat cap, but... that's it!

Mark (in the hope you're seeing this), love the concept, but given it's featured some really interesting characters, it would be great to hear more about where they are now, their life post-boxing etc, rather than just their memories of the fights they were involved in.

That's exactly what I want to know, but it literally tells you nothing.. says where he used to live when he was growing up and so on, but nothing about where he is now, what he's doing, what' he's been up to since he retired etc.
Some good stuff in there though - thought he'd always been a bazooka of confidence, so was surprised to read about his level of self-doubt going into some of those fights. Comes across as a straight-talking, likeable character.

You don't get boxers like Scrap Iron these days. He was an exciting boxer, similar to Herbie Hide.

I think Ryan lost 3 of his last 4 fights, but they were terrific fights.

I have a lot of Paul's fights on dvd. I might dig them out at some point

Honestly watch any you can find. I have several on dvd but if it wasn't for an ex member of Boxrec you could have watched them all!

Paul 'scrap iron' Ryan - What a ring name. Didn't he used to enter the ring with his flat cap, skinhead and the song was any old iron any old iron

He fought Ross Hale which was a big domestic fight at the time and won it in a round. I remember at the time thinking Hale would win that one. It was a big win for Ryan, and he was being lined up for a title shot.

Unfortunately for Ryan in his very next fight he got poleaxed by Thaxton in a round and then again by Holligan after that.

As for Hale he never got back to the pre Ryan heights and both Hale and Ryan finished their careers with losses to Geoff McCreesh looking like shadows of their former selves.

I think I wrote about this on here years ago. They were great days for UK Light Welters. In a decade we had Pat Barrett, Andy Holligan, Ross Hale, Scrap Iron Ryan, Jon Thaxton, Shea Neary, Eamonn Magee, Junior Witter & Ricky Hatton, among others. And most of it was on domestic telly.

Yes a great time, Barrett was always a favourite of mine, good one punch KO artist

Loved Pat Barrett, KO of Calamati was frightening. Avoided at LW then somehow got matched against Manning Galloway for the wbo at ww. Galloway was a complete spoiler and runner. Very limp performance from Barrett on his one big shot.

I'm definitely among those who'd forgotten! In my head I'd have gone for 32 or something like that. Was a fan of the Black Flash.

On a related note, given we're in wonderful memory lane territory, I'm no fan of Bunce the person, but his piece on Nigel Benn in this week's BN is brilliant. Worth buying for that alone IMO.

Bunce is without doubt the best active boxing print journalist in the world. That's not up for debate for me. He is a complete plum when he's got a mic under his nose, though. Should 100% stick to writing but he's got bills to pay like everyone else.

I didn’t realise Ryan was such a naughty boy…. Soent best part of 8 years in the nick. He says he started boxing in his twenties? Went to Repton at 25…. Was effectively turned away. Didn’t realise he was such a late starter

I felt the same. I know about his boxing career, then the article seemed to end abruptly. Like they cut it so save space. Hope his doing well as his career gave me lots of entertainment.

The story was that someone in the back of the cab said to him 'I thought your nickname was 'The Milkman'. Ryan said 'why's that', to which the reply was 'because you only do a round'.

This may of course be an urban myth.
