Ex-champ Jamel Herring arrested for alleged domestic violence
Former junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring was arrested Thursday evening in Ohio for alleged misdemeanor domestic violence and assault, according to court records.
Herring, 39, was booked into Warren County Jail in Ohio and was awaiting arraignment. His bail was set at $50,000 for the alleged assault and $75,000 for the alleged domestic violence.
Herring's next court date is scheduled for Jan. 21.
Herring (24-5, 12 KOs) retired following his May 2022 loss to Jamaine Ortiz. The former Marine fought under the Top Rank Promotions banner on ESPN for years before that retirement.
Herring won the WBO title at 130 pounds in May 2019 with a decision win over Masayuki Ito. Herring made three successful defenses during his reign, with a decision victory over Lamont Roach (who challenges Gervonta Davis in March) and a sixth-round TKO of former champion Carl Frampton.
Herring dropped the title to Shakur Stevenson in October 2021 via 10th-round TKO. He lost to Ortiz in his next fight.

Jamel Herring arrested for violating protective order
Former junior lightweight titleholder Jamel Herring was arrested Tuesday in Ohio on two charges, including violation of a protective order.
Herring was booked at 4:01 p.m. into Warren County Jail and charged with violating the terms of a protective order and his probation.
Jennifer Herring, Jamel’s wife, filed a temporary protective order against her husband after an alleged domestic incident involving the Herrings led to the fighter being arrested January 9.
According to the police report of that incident, Jennifer Herring accused her husband of “viciously” attacking and choking her in their home. Jennifer Herring dropped the charges over that incident in February.
Jamel Herring’s attorney, Clyde Bennett, then released a statement to TMZ stating that there had been “insufficient evidence to prove that he committed any crime against his wife” and the “investigation demonstrated her claim against Mr. Herring [was] false."
In January, however, Jennifer Herring had filed for and was granted a permanent restraining order, according to Warren County court records. Because that replaced the temporary order against her husband, Jamel Herring was forbidden contact with his wife.
Jamel Herring is currently awaiting arraignment and will receive his next court date on Thursday, March 20.

Sorry to hear that his domestic life problems have turned him into a violent menace.

Wild story. That bail amount is serious, but honestly it moves fast when the person is well known. When I went through something similar in California, I worked with King Stahlman Bail Bonds and they handled everything way quicker than I expected. Totally different situation than Ohio, but that experience showed me how messy domestic violence bail can get when you’re not a celebrity.
