Emanuel Navarrete to defend belt against Charly Suarez on May 10

Emanuel Navarrete will make his fourth defense of the WBO junior lightweight title on May 10 against Charly Suarez, Boxing Scene has confirmed.

The fight will take place at Pechanga Arena in San Diego and will air live on ESPN. The news was first reported by Dan Rafael.

Navarrete, 39-2-1 (32 KOs), last fought at the venue last May, losing a split decision to Denys Berinchyk for the vacant WBO lightweight title. The fight will be the first for Navarrete, 30, since December, when he scored a dominant sixth-round knockout of Oscar Valdez.

Now Navarrete will face a different Olympian, this one being from the Philippines.

Suarez, 18-0 (10 KOs), is the WBO’s No. 1-rated 130lbs contender, and last fought in September, stopping Jorge Castaneda in three rounds. The 36-year-old Suarez, of Davao del Norte province in the Philippines, represented his country at the 2016 Olympics but has struggled in recent years to bring meaningful fights to fruition, with planned fights against Andres Cortes falling through multiple times.

Suarez rose to contention in 2023, when he scored a come-from-behind stoppage of the previously unbeaten Paul Fleming in Sydney, Australia. Since then, his past three fights have taken place on Top Rank undercards.

Boxing Scene had previously reported that the Raymond Muratalla-Zaur Abdullaev IBF interim lightweight title fight would take place on this card, having been moved from its original date of April 5 so Abdullaev would be able to observe Ramadan. Muratalla-Abdullaev will be the co-main event, with the winner being the next in line to face IBF lightweight titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko, should the 37-year-old Lomachenko continue to box.

EMANUEL NAVARRETE-CHARLY SUAREZ, ZAUR ABDULLAEV-RAYMOND MURATALLA SET FOR MAY 10 AT PECHANGA ARENA IN SAN DIEGO

Emanuel Navarrete will return to the site of his most recent loss for his next fight.

The Ring has confirmed that Navarrete will defend his WBO junior lightweight title against Charly Suarez in a 12-round main event ESPN will televise May 10 from Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Mexico’s Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) lost a split decision to Ukraine’s Denys Berinchyk (19-1, 9 KOs) in their 12-round fight for the then-unclaimed WBO lightweight title last May 18 at Pechanga Arena.

Navarrete, The Ring’s No. 1 contender at junior lightweight, moved back down from the lightweight limit of 135 pounds to the 130-pound division for the fight after Berinchyk beat him. He knocked out former featherweight and junior lightweight champ Oscar Valdez (32-3, 24 KOs) in the sixth round of their rematch, which took place December 7 at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

The Philippines’ Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) is the WBO’s number one contender in the junior lightweight division, but he is not ranked in the top 10 by The Ring. The 36-year-old Manila resident most recently stopped Jorge Castaneda (17-4, 13 KOs), of Laredo, Texas, in the third round September 20 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Freelance journalist Dan Rafael first reported Tuesday that Navarrete and Suarez agreed to headline this May 10 show.

As previously reported by multiple outlets, Zaur Abdullaev and unbeaten Raymond Muratalla will fight for the IBF interim lightweight title in promoter Top Rank’s co-feature May 10.

The Russian-born Abdullaev (20-1, 12 KOs), of Yerevan, Armenia, is ranked second among the IBF’s lightweight contenders, though he is not ranked by The Ring. Muratalla (22-0, 17 KOs), of Fontana, California, is rated fourth by the IBF and sixth by The Ring.

Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) won the then-vacant IBF lightweight title last May 12, when he stopped Australia’s George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) in the 11th round at RAC Arena in Perth. The three-division champion was granted additional time by the IBF to determine whether he will box again.

If the 37-year-old Lomachenko retires, the Abdullaev-Muratalla winner would be elevated from interim champion to full champion.

That was a tune up/get well fight, but it was really good and you were never completely sure the A side would prevail.
Great stuff as usual from TopRank - their filler is so much better than MR/QB/BXX.

Suarez got jobbed, that cut was caused by a punch. He should have a TKO win over Navarrete.
ESPN team doing their best to make it sound like a tough call. Come on, it was obviously from the punch.

100% it was from the punch. Really disappointing for Suarez to get his first loss like that

It was a punch. Navarette was fading. Tim Bradley called it a punch, the replay shows a punch. Really poor result for Suarez. They must appeal it.

I’m a Navarette fan and Suarez was robbed in that fight. Yes a rematch, but the result must be overturned.

It looks like California will change the result to a no contest.

That’s bollocks.

It’s clear it was a punch. The fight had ended and Reiss got his decision wrong after the referee got the decision wrong.

If the CAC can change it to a no contest, why can’t they change it to a Suarez win?

Boxing doesn’t help itself.

I had it 77-76 Navarrete as well but you've gotta feel for Suarez, caught Navarrete with a peach of a left hand, I've a degree of sympathy for the ref because the heads came together slightly after it and Navarrete's reaction was off someone hurt by a headclash, you don't see fighters wince usually after getting cut by a punch so I've no issues with the ref but no idea why the commission cant change it to a TKO for Suarez instead of a NC, good fight though Suarez took the fight straight to Navarrete, switched effectively, I'd only gave Suarez a round before the cut in the 6th but it clearly effected Navarrete and Suarez capitalized, Navarrete was good before that though, aggressive and was landing those winging shots from both hands, as I say the cut changed things and you've gotta feel for Suarez, I'm sure he'll get the rematch
