PLANT-RESENDIZ, CHARLO-LAMANNA ON MAY 31; PLAN FOR FALL FIGHT IF BOTH WIN

Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo are on a collision course for a long-awaited showdown this fall, but first they’ll co-headline a May 31 card in Las Vegas in separate fights, sources told The Ring.

Plant, the former super middleweight champion, will fight Jose Armando Resendiz in the 12-round main event, a PBC on Prime Video event available to subscribers. In the co-feature, Charlo will meet Thomas LaManna.

If both Plant and Charlo win as expected - they both figured to be heavy betting favorites - and emerge injured, the plan calls for them to fight each other at 168 pounds later this year, sources said.

There’s bad blood between Plant and Charlo stemming from an July 2023 backstage incident at the Terence Crawford-Errol Spence weigh-in. After Charlo apparently insulted Plant and yanked on his beard, Plant responded with a slap to the face.

Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) has fought only once since that incident, an entertaining ninth-round TKO of Trevor McCumby in September. Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) has also competed only once, a 10-round unanimous decision over Jose Benavidez Jr. in November 2023.

Charlo, 34, will end an 18-month layoff with his return bout vs. LaManna. Charlo is a former middleweight champion who will now campaign at super middleweight. His twin brother, Jermell Charlo, is the former undisputed champion at 154 pounds.

Plant’s two losses came against the sport’s elite: Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. Plant is The Ring’s No. 4 boxer at 168 pounds.

He’ll meet Resendiz in his second bout since the March 2023 decision defeat to Benavidez. Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) burst on the scene that same month with a 10th-round KO of former champion Jarrett Hurt in an upset.

In his next fight, the Mexican was stopped in Round 8 by Elijah Garcia. Resendiz, 26, has fought only once since that September 2023 loss, a fifth-round TKO victory over a novice fighter named Fernando Paliza in February.

LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) has won nine fights against limited opposition since a first-round KO loss to Erislandy Lara in his lone title challenge. “Cornflake” LaManna, 33, is from New Jersey.

The event is slated to take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mall will be Summer.

Don’t know why they need to marinate. Fair enough, mall hasn’t been active. So he’ll need to dust off the cobwebs.

JERMALL CHARLO GOES OFF ON THOMAS LAMANNA: “YOU CAN’T F—- WITH ME!”

Jermall Charlo claims that he’s back both mentally and physically. But while that remains to be seen, the trash-talking version of himself seems to be alive and well.

For the first time in almost two years, and only the second time in five, Charlo will officially make his way back to the ring on May 31st at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thomas LaManna, who’s on a nine-fight win streak, has a strong feeling that he’ll make it an even 10 come fight night. Charlo, however, hopes he has a pillow and blanket ready.

“When I knock you out, I’m a stomp on yo ass,” said Charlo during a Zoom presser with the media to promote their showdown. “I’m a stomp on yo ass.”

During a brutal five-year stretch, Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) dealt with personal issues that continually derailed him. LaManna, on the other hand, is in arguably the best form of his life. His level of opposition hasn’t been top-notch, but the 33-year-old has done exactly what you're supposed to when an overmatched opponent jumps in the ring with you.

Although he hasn’t been known for his power, his last four opponents, and five out of the last six, haven’t been able to take him the distance. But whenever LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) or anyone else highlights his recent handiwork, Charlo screws up his face and laughs.

The Houston native won’t knock LaManna for having a little self-belief but he doesn't believe that will save him from staring up at the ceiling lights once he connects with a right hand.

“You can’t f--- with me,” said an amped-up Charlo. “You can't f--- with me. I’m a show you. Keep talking, keep running yo mouth. I’m a show you. I’m a stop him. I'm a show you.”

Press Release

Middleweight Kyrone “Shut It Down” Davis hopes to catapult himself into a world title shot when he faces undefeated Yoenli Feliciano Hernandez over ten rounds as part of the four-fight PBC Championship Boxing on Prime Video (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) lineup on Saturday, May 31st at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The show will stream exclusively on Prime Video for all Prime members in the United States and select countries. Join today or start a free trial to catch the championship card. The event is headlined by a pair of super middleweight stars co-headlining in separate attractions as WBA interim titlist Caleb Plant takes on Mexico's Armando Reséndiz and undefeated two-division champion Jermall Charlo goes up against veteran contender Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna in a ten-round showdown. “A win on May 31st will 100% let everyone know I need a title shot,” said Davis (19-3-1, 6 KOs). “Stop playing with my name. This is the second guy that’s ranked #1 by the WBA. So how many of these guys do I have to beat to get my shot? I want the big fights for the titles. I’ve fought a lot of world champions. I’m ready for the title.”

Davis has recently arrived in Las Vegas to continue training camp with the esteemed Stephen “Breadman” Edwards, who also trains Caleb Plant and who has led Davis’ corner for over a decade. As his stock in the sport ascends, Davis reflected on his relationship with Edwards and the advantage it gives him in the ring. “I’ve been out here in Las Vegas for about a week so far and everything is going great,” said Davis. “Everything is growing and just getting better in general. ‘Breadman’ and I have been training together for 11 years, so there’s a lot of chemistry and learning together. When we started out, I was only 19-years old, and he wasn’t a world champion trainer yet. It’s been a lot of coming up together and getting to know each other extremely well. Our communication is spot on. He knows how hard to push me, and when to tell me to turn it up and step on the gas. There have been a lot of learning curves and our careers have gotten better together.”

Entering this fight on a three-bout winning streak, Davis most recently delivered the best performance of his career as he defeated the then-unbeaten Elijah Garcia by decision in June 2024. After the fight was originally rescheduled for March before finally taking place in June, Davis’ victory allowed him to prove his standing in the middleweight division. “I definitely needed it and wanted to win to prove some people wrong and show that I’m at a certain level,” said Davis. “I’ve taken the hard road sometimes. I haven’t always had the time to train properly. I came in on short notice several times. I came in on only 16 days’ notice for the David Benavidez fight. For my last fight, that was the first time in a while that I’ve had a chance to fully prepare, and I think it showed in my performance. It makes a huge difference and it’s a huge advantage to be able to fully and properly prepare. Sometimes you can go into camp with only two or three weeks’ notice of who you’re fighting. And even though you might have been in the gym for longer, you’re finding out about that specific opponent and able to prepare for them for only a short time. And sometimes I’ve had to take those kinds of risks in my career.”

On May 31st, Davis will take on an accomplished Cuban amateur who’s quickly risen in the 160-pound division in Hernandez. Having most recently dominated Angel Ruiz in February, Hernandez will be highly motivated to make a statement, just like Davis is. While Davis could put himself into world title contention, his focus remains on preparing for the best version of Hernandez and continuing to take on the toughest challenges he can get. “I know he had a good amateur career and he’s a good fighter overall,” said Davis. “He seems like he knows what he’s doing and I expect him to be very motivated. “I’m coming to do whatever I have to do. I’d have loved the title shot, but I’m just fighting the best that’s available and the guy that’s going to be in front of me on May 31st.”

In a pro career that now dates back over a decade. Davis appears now on the precipice of vaulting into the upper echelon of the sport. While some may be surprised by his rise, Davis believes he’s a sleeping giant who’s ready to take advantage of what’s in front of him. “I feel like the media and oddsmakers don’t always know boxing,” said Davis, when asked about his underdog status heading into the Garcia fight. “Some people just look at records blindly. And even though they know better, they still don’t do better. In boxing, we know you can build up and pad your record.

“I have a loss against Davis Benavidez, but on only 16 days’ notice,” said Davis. “I have the draw with Anthony Dirrell, but I think I really won that fight. Vegas and the media don’t always see that side, and they just go by wins and losses. A lot of boxing insiders knew that was a real fight against Elijah Garcia though. You embrace whatever card you’re given. Whether I’m the underdog or the favorite, I embrace whatever I am. That’s the attitude I have in this game.”

Tickets for the live event are on sale now through AXS.com.

Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna: This is my last shot, gonna make it my best shot

Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna doesn’t have any illusions about where he’s at in his career.

The realization that the same call he received for his next assignment won’t be around with another defeat is all the motivation he needs to deliver his best-ever performance. It will take just that for the long shot underdog from Millville, New Jersey to push past Jermall Charlo in their May 31 clash on PBC on Prime from Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

LaManna, 39-5-1 (18 KOs), enters the clash armed with a nine-fight win streak. However, most have been of the confidence building variety since a first-round knockout to Erislandy Lara in their May 2021 vacant secondary WBA middleweight title fight in Carson, California.

“I’ve been in this same exact seat,” LaManna said during Wednesday’s promotional press conference at The Mayan in Los Angeles. “I came up drastically short against Lara, I don’t ever want to go through that again. Personally, it messed me up. It put my family back with a lot of things. I don’t want to mess that up for them again.

“We all know the task at hand. I know what I’m up against. We all know this is my last shot. I’m gonna make it my last shot, my best shot. I’m gonna give it my all.

LaManna is a +750 underdog to prevail against Houston’s Charlo, 33-0 (22 KOs), a former two-division titlist. Their bout serves as the co-feature to the Caleb Plant-Armando Resendiz interim WBA super middleweight title fight.

In theory, the show is designed to build towards a Plant-Charlo grudge match later this year.

Plant, 23-2 (14 KOs), repeatedly emphasized the importance of not looking past May 31. Charlo carries that same mindset for the most part, as he views this fight as his true introduction to the super middleweight division.

As shown last weekend in New York City, just one upset can ruin future plans. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, 17-2 (13 KOs) – who was on hand during Wednesday’s event - dominated Ryan Garcia in an upset win atop a May 1 DAZN Pay-Per-View event.

The outcome dampened the enthusiasm behind, if not altogether canceled, a previously signed rematch between Garcia and Devin Haney later this fall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Garcia was upwards of a -1000 favorite, not far off from where Charlo sits headed into his clash with LaManna.

“We’re just gonna upset the applecart,” insisted LaManna, who has stopped his last four opponents. “He's a two-division world champion. He’s been at the top level. I can’t take that away from him.

“This is why we fight the fights. We just gonna have to see. I’m gonna shock the world.”

CALEB PLANT STILL UNSATISFIED, AIMS TO ADD MORE WORLD TITLES AND ACCOLADES BEFORE HIS TIME EXPIRES

Caleb Plant enjoys taking a stroll through his palatial estate every now and then. Although he has plenty of areas to head into, his favorite is the trophy room.

Currently, the IBF super middleweight world title he won back in 2019 is something he holds dear to his heart. But, he’s grown fond of the WBA interim crown he recently grabbed too.

For some, winning those titles is enough. Plant though, is a different sort of guy. Does he appreciate the things he’s accomplished thus far? Of course he does. But is he satisfied? Of course not.

"I'm a competitor and a winner," Plant told FightHub TV. "I'm just trying to see how many world titles and accolades I can rack up before my time expires."

At age 33, don't expect Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) to walk away from the game anytime soon. In fact, he's a few weeks away from marching into his first fight of the year when he takes on Jose Armando Resendiz at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 31.

There's a bit on the line come fight night. As long as Plant takes his man out, and Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) takes care of business against Thomas LaManna in the co-main event, the two will meet up in the second half of the year.

Beating Charlo is salient for Plant. He desperately wants to continue building up his legacy in a positive direction. In order to do that, he’ll need to beat top-level opposition.

If you asked Plant where his motivation comes from, fights against Charlo as well as former foes Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez would be something he points to. The money is nice without a doubt, but he's moreso addicted to the spotlight and glory.

"I'm really good at what I do, and I've dedicated my whole life to it so I deserve to get fairly compensated for that but money is not at the top of my why."

Thomas LaManna knows Jermall Charlo’s struggle, remains focused

Unless you’re paying close attention to the New Jersey club scene, it’s likely that you haven’t seen Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna in the ring in several years.

The last time LaManna was on the world stage was in 2021, when he was knocked out in 80 seconds by Erislandy Lara in a bid for the WBA middleweight title. That loss sent LaManna back to the club scene – and into a depression – that he had to fight his way out of.

Since then, LaManna – a 33-year-old from the Atlantic City suburb of Millville, New Jersey – has won nine straight, gathering momentum as he heads into his next big fight opportunity, a May 31 showdown with former junior middleweight and middleweight titleholder Jermall Charlo at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Along the way, LaManna has learned hard lessons that he believes will help him against Charlo.

“I learned from the Erislandy Lara fight that I can’t let the moment get to me. If I can do that all throughout the week and get there to fight night, it’s gonna be a long night for Charlo,” said LaManna, 39-5-1 (18 KOs), at Wednesday’s media workout, which took place at P4P Boxing & Fitness (LaManna is the owner) in Atco, New Jersey.

“My whole mindset changed after the Lara fight. I didn’t want to fight anymore. But when I came back, I knew I wanted to do it the right way. I knew this was my big opportunity at the biggest stage. Now I’ve got that great opportunity.”

Though LaManna hasn’t been in a big fight in several years, he has been far more active than Charlo, who hasn’t fought since a 10-round decision over Jose Benavidez Jnr in November of 2023. LaManna’s most recent outing came in March, a second-round stoppage over Noe Alejandro Lopez in Philadelphia. LaManna has fought three times since Charlo was last in the ring.

“I definitely have the momentum over Charlo,” LaManna said. “But we have to let the fights happen. We’re gonna find out on May 31.

“We had a smart camp and did what we had to do. We had the right sparring and worked on the right tactics. I’m in shape and I’ve filled into 168 well. … I felt the difference fighting at 168 in my last fight. I feel energized and don’t have to cut weight.”

Despite a tumultuous first digital press conference, in which Charlo derided LaManna as a “bum” in a heated tirade, LaManna says he still has compassion for his opponent. Charlo, a 35-year-old from Houston, has been open about his diagnosis with bipolar disorder and substance abuse issues, which have limited his in-ring appearances in recent years.

LaManna acknowledges these mental health struggles, but he says he still has a job to do.

“Being a good person, I care about Charlo’s mental health struggles and know that it’s real,” LaManna said. “But as far as boxing, I don’t care about it at all. It is what it is. We’re still gonna fight.”

A win over Charlo will go a long way towards validating LaManna as a legitimate contender and could open up big fight opportunities at 168lbs. While LaManna acknowledges that, he knows none of that talk matters if he can’t deliver on May 31.

“I’m not looking ahead to anything,” he said. “I’m fully focused on this fight. But when I get past Charlo, I want it all. I want the biggest fights out there.”

‘Get more active’: Jermall Charlo talks about upcoming career plans as he eyes Caleb Plant fight

Jermall Charlo wants to be more active this year as he looks to re-establish himself as a top fighter in the sport.

Here are some excerpts of what Charlo had to say.

On his view about competing in the 168 lb division
“I never looked at the weight class like it’s poppin’, I’m just bigger now. I don’t think my body at this age is ready to go fight and break myself down to get back down to 154, 160 pound division and fight at that high of competition as I did years ago. So now my new competitive weight is at 168, I just happen to fall in their weight class. Now I’m apart of their weight class.”

On what he’s looking to prove to himself this year
“I want to be like a lot more active. I’m like the vet now. Get more active, take this fight — this win for me is like a birthday victory for me and then get right back in the gym and get something else and hopefully look at the big cards like — you know their names, people that we could make tons of money and tons of wealth with. Get back in the ring and just show myself I’m the best in the world.”

On heading towards a fight with Caleb Plant
“I mean I want a fight with Caleb, semi-final type of deal...I’m going out there just to be the best Jermall Charlo I can be at the time and I’m only going to get better from here. I feel like I made some moves in my camp and I made some changes and I feel like those changes are for the better of me and I’m healthy, I’m better now, so really I’m happy to be back in this position to be able to put my undefeated record on the line and show the world why I’m one of the greats.”

On what fights he wants to make at 168
“I just want to get the Caleb Plant fight out the way. I don’t want to take too long with the Canelo fight...I mean, he still has Terence Crawford to worry about and that could be next year sometime. And then after that I really don’t know.”

‘I’m going to show him there’s levels’: Caleb Plant expects to outclass Armando Resendiz

Caleb Plant is focused on taking care of Armando Resendiz before turning his attention to what’s next.

Here’s some of what Plant had to say...

Plant of feeling like he’s now the best version of himself
“This is definitely one of the best versions of myself, just hell of a training camp and with all the experience I have, it’ll show.”

On his opponent Resendiz and what he has in store for him
“Skills. If you check my last fight I got a great inside game, too. So if that’s what he wants I’m going to show him there’s levels.”

On those who criticize his sportsmanship
“I would say that Anthony Dirrell was talking way too much, he was being racist, he had shirts with my head cut off and planting me into the ground, saying he hates me and he’s had a lot of words for me for a lot of years so I haven’t heard too many people complain about the celebration who followed the lead up.”

On the best fight in the 168 division that doesn’t include Canelo
“I feel like there’s a lot of great fights out there, the ‘mall fight, Munguia, Berlanga, Pacheco, Sheeraz, Mbilli — all those fights are big fights for me and any one of them can fight each other and it will not be as big a fight as if any of them fought me, and that’s a fact.”

On where things stand in his beef with Jermall Charlo
“Right now all that’s on the backburner for me. I’m just focused on Saturday, can only fight one fight at a time and that fight don’t happen without me getting my hand raised in this fight. So right now I’m locked in on that, put everything else on the backburner, and once I get my hand raised May 31st, Saturday, we’ll have plenty of time to talk about it, plenty of time to think on all that but right now I’m focused.”

What an ass card I mean if this is what they serve up for non ppv what is the point?, Resendiz would be a poor opponent for Plant coming straight off the Benavidez loss

As for Jermall....

This card would be trash even with Plant vs Charlo on main event. Both of them fighting against Resendiz and Lamanna is just soooo low level.

Press Conference Quotes

Caleb Plant
“It feels good to be back on the big stage,” said Plant. “My team put in a lot of work and left no stone unturned and that’s gonna show on Saturday.”

“I’m looking to put on a show. This is a big moment for Armando, but it’s big for me too. I have a lot on the line. He may have nothing to lose, but I’ve got everything to lose. I sacrificed a lot and you’re gonna see it in the ring.”

Armando Reséndiz
“This has me so motivated and happy that I can’t even express how excited I am,” said Reséndiz through an interpreter.“My team has gone above and beyond and I’m feeling like the best version of myself.”

“I don’t care what Caleb says. I’m just focused on myself. I’m gonna speak with my fists when that bell rings.”
