Shannon Briggs vs. Oliver McCall - July 1, 2025?

Shannon Briggs returns July 1 at 53, linked to Oliver McCall

Shannon Briggs has revealed he will return to the ring on July 1, having been linked to a fight against Oliver McCall.

Worldboxingnews.com understands Briggs is set to join the aging boxers revolution under promoter Jimmy Adams. ‘The Cannon’ will compete at the Texas Troubadour Theatre in Nashville on one of Adams’ Country Box shows.

McCall has won his last two bouts at the same venue on two other Adams events, leading to a link between the former world heavyweight champions.

Briggs, who holds the most first-round knockouts by a top division puncher in modern history, has a boxing record of 60-6-1, 53 KOs as a professional. [Peter Maher, who fought between the late 1800s and early 1900s, holds the actual record of 50]. Thirty-seven of Briggs’ wins have come via big knockout in the first three minutes.

The New Yorker won the WBO title in 2006, losing it in his first defense against Sultan Ibragimov. His ultimate triumph came on either side of heavyweight title reverses to Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko, who were the WBC heavyweight champion at the time.

Growing up in a tough neighborhood like Mike Tyson, ‘Iron Mike’ considered Briggs for an exhibition around the time he fought Roy Jones Jr.

Since then, Briggs admitted to getting a little out of shape, as he had always boasted of a ripped physique before 2020. He began training again earlier this year and is getting closer to his old fighting weight of 250 pounds in the heavyweight division.

He last fought in 2016, scoring his customary knockout in the first round against Emilion Zarate. Briggs had been promised a fight with David Haye if we won on the O2 Arena undercard. Once the victory was in the bag, Haye moved on to Tony Bellew and went back on his word.

Nine years later, Briggs is set to return to professional boxing, following the trend of fifty-plus heavyweights making comebacks.

Whether Briggs will fight McCall this summer or merely share a bill to draw in a crowd is not certain. With a six-year age gap and physique on opposite ends of the scale, Adams may decide to do the latter.
