Christian Mbilli-Maciej Sulecki set for June 27 in Quebec City

Christian Mbilli and Maciej Sulecki of Poland are to contest the WBC interim super-middleweight title on June 27 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada, it has been confirmed.

The 29-year-old Mbilli, of France via Cameroon, has established himself as one of the world’s finest at 168lbs, but is among those whose career has been at risk of stalling as a consequence of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s dominance of his division and the few demands placed on the Mexican by the sanctioning bodies.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, I’ve worked so hard to get here, and there’s no way I’m leaving without the belt on June 27,” he said. “I want to salute my opponent for having the courage to accept this challenge. But once we’re in the ring, he’ll have to face all the intensity and rage I’ve built up against those who refused to fight me.”

Sulecki, 35 and who lost to Diego Pacheco in August 2024, said: “Christian Mbilli will not be an easy fight, but I have never felt better. I am in a great place with my team, and everyone is doing their part. On June 27, I will make sure I do mine with a statement in his hometown.”

Also at super middleweight, Erik Bazinyan will fight his fellow Canadian Steven Butler over 10 rounds in the chief support.

There will also be a 10-round heavyweight contest between Arslanbek Makhmudov and Ricardo Brown, a junior-lightweight fight of the same length between Leïla Beaudoin and Elhem Mekhaled, 10-round fights for the junior welterweight Jhon Orobio and the lightweight Luis Santana against opponents who are to be confirmed, and an eight-round fight, against an as-yet-unnamed opponent, for the super middleweight Wilkens Mathieu.

“Christian Mbilli is one of the most exciting fighters in boxing today, and this is the moment he’s been waiting for,” said Bob Arum whose promotional organisation Top Rank co-promotes with Camille Estephan’s Eye of the Tiger. “He’s taking on a tough, experienced veteran in Maciej Sulecki, who’s coming off a huge upset. This has all the makings of a firefight in front of one of North America’s best boxing crowds.”

“A world title is on the line, but in Christian Mbilli’s case, it’s also the culmination of a lifetime of work,” said Estephan. “That’s why we’re confident he won’t miss his chance. We saw the beating Sulecki handed to the fearsome Ali Akhmedov, but as we’ve been saying for years now, Christian is on another level.

“The winner of this fight will solidify their position as the top contender to Canelo and [William] Scull’s titles. So, the stakes are sky-high for Christian and for all of Quebec boxing. We’re calling on the entire province to show up in Quebec City to support him on June 27.”

Alvarez and William Scull, the IBF champion, fight for the undisputed title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May 3.

As a proud fan, I’ve been waiting for this moment just like Christian has. He’s one of the most explosive fighters in the sport,Crazy Cattle 3D and I have no doubt he’s going to put on a show on June 27. Let’s go Mbilli!

My bad, seems like I'm out of the loop.

Just looked it up, and it seems like this is the second time Pacheco has pulled out against Mbilli (last time it was for the IBF mandatory spot).
Bad look for him.

ERIK BAZINYAN PULLS OUT, REPLACED BY JOSE DE JESUS MACIAS ON MBILLI-SULECKI UNDERCARD

For the second time the super middleweight bout between Steven Butler-Erik Bazinyan has hit the skids.

Earlier Tuesday, news broke that Bazinyan had to pull out after aggravating ligament damage to his right ankle. The same injury prevented the two from facing off March 14.

Eye of The Tiger moved quickly to keep Butler on the Christian Mbilli-Maciej Sulecki show on June 27. The two-time middleweight title challenger will meet rival Jose de Jesus Macias, who beat him in five rounds in January 2021.

Butler (35-5-1, 29 KOs) was a good domestic-level amateur before turning professional in 2014. He remained unbeaten until he lost to compatriot Brandon Cook (TKO 7). Several wins earnt him a shot at WBA 160-pound ruler Ryota Murata in Japan, but he was stopped in five rounds. He lost his comeback fight to Macias (TKO 5) and his career was on the line.

He worked his way back up and claimed the NABF title and was rewarded with a second world title opportunity, this time against WBO boss Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. It didn't go well and he was stopped in two rounds. He has since returned with a pair of wins, notably icing Steve Rolls (KO 1), but was beaten by Patrice Volny (TKO 9). The 30-year-old moved up in weight and got back in the win column in November.

Macias (29-13-4, 15 KOs) turned professional in 2011. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native lost his debut and again in his fifth and ninth outings. However, he learned on the job and reeled off 12 consecutive wins. He lost three straight, notably going the distance with Erickson Lubin (UD 10) and Giovani Santillan (UD 8) in America. Macias has scored impressive wins over Canadians Francis Lafrenier (MD 8) and Butler (TKO 5).

The 33-year-old lost to Pavel Silyagin (UD 10), Bazinyan (UD 10) and Callum Simpson (UD 10) but returned late last year with a win.

Christian Mbilli promises to put more hurt on Maciej Sulecki than Diego Pacheco did

Christian Mbilli is just days away from his biggest fight to date, which will take place on Friday in Quebec City, Canada. Heading into his first major title fight, he says he is planning to make his opponent, Maciej Sulecki, pay for all the hard work he’s had to put in for training.

“I always say that after such a difficult journey, this entire training camp, and all the ups and downs, there has to be someone who will pay the price. And think Sulecki will have to pay for it on Friday,” said Mbilli, 28-0 (23 KOs), at Wednesday’s press conference at Centre Videotron, where their WBC interim super middleweight title fight will take place.

"As usual, I expect a spectacular fight, and once again, I’ll be leaving with the victory.”

Sulecki, 33-3 (13 KOs), of Warsaw, Poland is coming off one of his biggest wins to date, a tenth round stoppage of Ali Akhmedov in February, to earn the WBC silver belt at 168lbs. The 36-year-old Sulecki had previously challenged for a world title, losing a shutout to Demetrius Andrade in 2019, but was knocked out in six rounds by Diego Pacheco last August.

"I’m not going to say that I will put him out faster than Diego Pacheco did. But I can promise a more spectacular fight, and that, at the end of it, Sulecki will feel more pain than after his fight with Pacheco,” said Mbilli.

“That said, if the KO happens, good, because I’m not paid to do overtime."

Sulecki, for his part, says he isn’t intimidated by his opponent despite his unbeaten record, saying he has had a good training camp.

“I know Christian Mbilli is a good fighter. He is very strong and aggressive, and sometimes he’s very wild in the ring. But I know what I have to do in the ring. I’m ready,” said Sulecki.

“The most important thing for Mbilli right now is this fight with me. This will be very difficult for him. He can talk all he wants about his plans, but he has to fight me first.”

The fight, which will be promoted by Top Rank and Eye of the Tiger Management, will headline a nine-fight card, which will air live on ESPN+, beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

Interesting card, especially for french fans of boxing since 5 french fighters were supposed to fight. Mbilli is clearly the one the most expected (and not only by french fans). The rest the evening is a bit disappointing for the french fighters so far, with the fight of Moreno Fendero postponed, and the loss for Adagio McDonald, Sandy Messaoud and Elhem Mekhaled.
