Because he failed to capture a major belt at LHW, some of Toney's good performances in this division being dismissed. He arguably deserved at least one win over Montell Griffin.
Let's take Toney from either Griffin fight and match him against Kovalev of 2013-2017.
How it goes?
Sergey Kovalev vs James Toney (175lbs)

Usually guys that fought well at a distance were a hard night for Toney. I'd favor Kovalev by decision here.
Also Toney beat Griffin twice in my opinion. The 2nd fight wasn't even close.

It's a tough fight but I like Toney to win. I think he'd get to Kovalev's body and weaken him.

Great fight
Kovalev can be countered and hurt. Id take toney - his atg chin holds up and the suapect chin of koaev falters late

I believe the Kovalev of that era is one of the greatest light heavys ever and should have two wins over Ward.
He has a bad style for Toney, the latter's chin and defense notwithstanding. Competitive but clear decision win for Kovalev.

Either Kovalev or Toney would take a decision in a close fight.
