Manny Pacquiao vs. Mario Barrios | PBC PPV - 19 July 2025

Sources: Pacquiao ending retirement to face Barrios for WBC belt

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will end his nearly four-year retirement to face Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight championship on July 19 in Las Vegas, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

The fight will be available via PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view.

Pacquiao, 46, last fought in August 2021 when he lost a unanimous decision against Yordenis Ugas for the WBA welterweight championship. After the loss, Pacquiao announced his retirement on social media to focus primarily on his political career. But boxing's first and only eight-division world champion has kept an eye on the sport that made him a household name.

Rumors of his return have circulated over the past year. In July 2024, Pacquiao competed in an exhibition boxing match against kickboxer Rukiya Anpo at Super RIZIN 3. Pacquiao's name has been tied to a return fight with Barrios since late last year.

At least week's Canelo-Alvarez-William Scull fight in Saudi Arabia, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Boxing King Media that the plan was for Barrios to defend the title against Pacquiao in the summer, while also noting Pacquiao had already been cleared to compete by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The WBC has written rules that state a former champion is allowed to request a title fight after coming out of retirement.

"At this time, Mario Barrios is going to face Manny Pacquiao in July," Sulaiman said. "That's a tremendous fight."

Boxing's first and only eight-division world champion is set to be inducted into boxing's Hall of Fame next month. He is also in the midst of a very close Senate race in the Philippines, where he previously served as a Senator from 2016 to 2022. According to Brunch Boxing, Pacquiao won't formally announce his return to boxing until after the election on May 12. But all signs and sources point to Pacquiao's announcement being a formality as his return to boxing is imminent.

Fighting out of San Antonio, Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) last fought against Abel Ramos on the undercard of Jake Paul's decision win over Mike Tyson. He won the interim WBC title in September 2023 when he outpointed Ugas and was elevated to full champion in June 2024 after Terence Crawford was designated as the WBC's "champion in recess" after he moved up to 154 pounds to face Israil Madrimov. Barrios' only two losses have come to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman.

The co-main event will be a rematch between unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora (22-1-1, 14 KOs) and Tim Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs). The two previously met on March 30, 2024. Tszyu was originally scheduled to face Thurman, but an injury forced Thurman out less than two weeks before the scheduled date. Fundora stepped in as a short-notice replacement and won a split decision in an upset.

TGB Promotions currently has T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on hold for July 19. But Lady Gaga's Mayhem Ball tour is being promoted for July 16, 18 and 19, which probably would move the fight to neighboring MGM Grand Garden Arena, where Pacquiao made his stateside debut and won his first major world title against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba on June 23, 2001.

I hate this fight. Hope it doesn’t happen but if it does then I hope it’s a big flop. Manny should be retired and it’s a joke he go straight in for a world title after so long out.

It's a bit of a cheek alright, PPV?
Pfft! :shame:
Nah. Manny was a bit of a shell four years ago, and Thurman would have been such a good win to go out on.
But oh no, he lost to Ugas two years later just to prove he was a shell in 2021.
So now it's 2025...:

Yh Thurman was a great win.

I’m glad he didn’t fight Spence.. but at this rate, what really is the point.

They should be selling it as an exhibition.
Manny has had more than one cash out fight.

Manny looked crap in those exhibitions a few years ago. One of which most people thought he lost.

I feel bad for Manny. He’s probably lost the bulk of his money.

Randomly one of my old colleagues was friends with him. He owned an interior design company and did a fair bit of work with him at his house (I didn’t believe it but he showed me photos of the 2 of them playing chess at his house). He said that people would just turn up at his asking for handouts and he’d often give them. Plus had a load of hanger ons.

Its a horrible fight - I'm all for the old guys fighting for world titles if they can prove they can still offer something (like there was nothing really wrong with Pacquiao's last proper fight because he hadn't long beaten Thurman) - but after 4 years out, he needed a significant tune up.

This is comparable (in some ways - some ways worst, some ways not so bad) as Ali vs Holmes.

This is obviously a bad idea for Pacquiao, and most of us I'm sure figure he's going to lose this one. I'm just curious if the general public will feel the same or if there will still be a large amount of fans that just don't get it about age, and the effect it has on fighters.

Barrios is coming off a rather sub par performance last time out himself. His draw with Abel Ramos I believe was on the Tyson vs Jake Paul card.

Barrios is no Holmes. He is indeed a very beatable Champion, but Manny ain't gonna have it in him to beat even a lower tier Champion like that at this point.

Ugas was probably what? The 3rd best active beltholder in the division 4 years ago when Pac fought him, and Ugas won.

I don't think Barrios is as good as Ugas, but he's also fighting a Pacquiao that's 4 years older, and with years of ring rust.

PACQUIAO-BARRIOS CARD TO FEATURE FUNDORA-TSZYU REMATCH, ISAAC CRUZ RETURN

Manny Pacquiao will end his retirement at age 46 to challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title July 19 in Las Vegas, sources confirmed to The Ring.

The legendary boxer will return to the ring nearly four years after his supposed final fight when he dropped a decision to Yordenis Ugas. Pacquiao is one of boxing’s all-time greatest fighters.

He’s the only boxer ever to win titles in eight divisions, capturing titles from 108 to 154 pounds.

But his last time in the ring was an exhibition in December 2022 in South Korea where he looked far from the dynamo that took boxing by storm.

Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) has retired several times before only to return to the ring. His last victory - and great performance - was a July 2019 decision over Keith Thurman.

Pacquiao will attempt to become the second oldest champion ever at age 46, surpassing even the late George Foreman who shocked the world when he KOed Michael Moorer to win the heavyweight crown in 1994.

Pacquiao is currently the fourth-oldest fighter to win a title, doing so when he defeated Thurman. Bernard Hopkins holds the record at age 49.

Barrios, who turns 30 later this month, will enjoy a 16-year age advantage. The Texan is The Ring’s No. 3 boxer at 147 pounds.

Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) is coming off a surprising draw with Abel Ramos in November, a fight where they traded knockdowns. Barrios’ losses came to Gervonta Davis and Thurman.

The fight has been in the works for nearly a year.

“I made history at 40 beating Keith Thurman and I feel at 45, I have a lot left in the game as I haven’t taken a lot of punishment over the last few years,” Pacquiao told this reporter in June. “ … I want to go out making history.”

Barrios said at the time: “I'm very excited at the possibility of this fight being made. Manny Pacquiao is a future Hall of Famer, a legend and someone I looked up to growing up. To share the ring with him would be an honor and a dream come true."

The Sebastian Fundora-Tim Tszyu junior middleweight title rematch will serve as the PPV chief support bout, sources said. Fundora upset Tszyu last March in one of the year’s best action fights.

Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz will return on the undercard, per sources, and one possibility is a rematch with Angel Fierro, whom he defeated in a February slugfest.

A real lose/lose situation for Barrios, aside from the dough. If he even struggles slightly against the corpse of Manny it's a horrific look, and even if he gets a vicious stoppage win no-one will give a fcuk, considering the circumstances. Horrible fight.

Barrios beat Ugas!

As disgraceful as Ali vs Holmes was - Ali was only retired 2 year out whereas Pacquao is 4 years out. Clearly Ali was in no fit state to be fighting, wheras at least Manny, looks and sounds generally coherent.

On paper (without seeing the clear decline in Ali's speech, movement etc) - less than 2 years before Holmes he'd put on a pretty decent display vs Spinks in the rematch. Whereas Pacquiao last decent win and last decent performance was SIX years ago.

Thats why I said in some case worse (the fact Manny is fighting for a world title 6 years after his last win and last decent performance) and some cases not as bad (Ali was visibly not in a fit state to be in the ring).

Poor Manny

A hall of fame superstar boxer, the adoration of millions of people in his homeland, riches beyond his wildest dreams, a happy and stable home life

And yet at 46 years old he’s signed up to be punched repeatedly in the face by a much younger much more capable man

Let’s hope this is a one off urge he needs to get out of his system rather than a sign that he’s gonna really struggle with life as a civilian as he ages.
