Died too young but packed in a lot of living. Carl pulled off a massive upset when he ventured to South Africa in the summer of 1975 and outscored the world-rated Elijah Makhatini over 10 rounds. (Makhatini was once mighty close to a shot at Carlos Monzon for the world middleweight title.) Carl needed to beat Larry Paul in his next fight to secure a shot at the British title but the erratic Paul found some form and won a 10-round decision, after which Speare slowly drifted from the game. RIP.
