Thanks !! I actually have that saved as a photo. Isn't it that a fantastic slice of history for the era ? I'm fascinated to track the to evolution of SF area boxing as it evolved in the early part of the 20th century !

I just posted a topic in the Record Queries board (probably the wrong forum board) updating details on the old Ridgewood Grove S.C in New York.

The old boxing venue was located on the corner of Cypress Avenue and Centre Street in Ridgewood, Queens and it operated until 10/30/1926. It moved to the New Ridgewood Grove boxing venue on St. Nicholas and Palmetto the following Saturday night. So all records listed for the Ridgewood Grove prior to 11/6/1926 should in fact be listed under the venue entry for the Ridgewood Grove S.C on this website.

Both venues were indeed operated by Ridgewood Grove S.C, but in two different locations. I have images of the old boxing club on Cypress Ave and Centre St.

Hello,

I am searching for any information on a fighter named "Sontag". I do not know if this was his first or last name or his "fighting name". I know he fought a fight at the City Park Arena in Toledo, Ohio on July 28th, (give or take a day) in 1904. He fought Edward Gloman. The reason I am inquiring is Edward Gloman was my great-grandfather and he died about a month later due to bleeding on the brain from the fight. It was probably an amateur fight, but I do not know for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

There are no events in the database for July 27-29, 1904 at Toledo (although I did not do a search for other dates in July). Also, I could not find any names, doing a name search, for things like Gloman%. There were results when searching for Sontag%: (https://boxrec.com/en/search?p%5Bfirst_ ... Dir%5D=ASC). But none match who you are looking for.

Good luck in your search! Maybe that name and bout will show up in the database in the future. BoxRec Editors are adding dozens of new and historical bouts every day to the database.

Sharkey Athletic Club
was located at Columbus Avenue near West 67th Street in NYC.
Gene Tunney had his professional fight debut there in July of 1915 (against Bobby Dawson)
in his 1931 book A MAN MUST FIGHT he writes
"This club was nothing more than a loft with tiers of wooden benches to the ceiling,
in an old building on Lincoln square.
It was an absolute fire trap.
How they got permission from the fire department to hold
matches in it is still a mystery."

(painted in 1909, the artist studio was just across from the Sharkey Athletic Club))

Updating Ric's initial post: New York City's Long Acre A.C. moved from West 29th Street in April, 1912, to the El Dorado Casino, which was located at 7th Avenue and West 52nd Street. The Long Acre outfit, headed by the Neumann brothers, had lost their lease on the 29th Street venue, and that building was torn down to pave the way for the construction of a new structure.

The Orpheum Theater, in Paterson, NJ, opened in August 17, 1912, located on Van Houten Street, close to Main Avenue. For years, it was a vaudeville venue--Joe Besser and Paterson native Lou Costello performed there--then it housed burlesque shows. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, boxing cards were often held at the Orpheum. Patrons would pay one admission charge to see the burlesque show and the boxing card that would conclude the evening's entertainment. This was not the only New Jersey burlesque/boxing venue in that period. Years later, the Paterson venue, which seated over 1100 people, was renamed the State Theatre. Subsequently, the building became a retail store and then a mosque
