David Price what if???

Post by Ezzard »

Price was agood fighter. And a likeable bloke.

I enjoyed his career immensely. And I wish him all the best.

It turned out his whiskers weren't good enough for the top levels of the sport. But if we could give David an above average chin how much further does he go in the game? Not saying he is undentable. But above average.

As ridiculous as it sounds, if things went his way in the right fights and xpicked the right opponents he could have cracked the top 5. Not saying he was as skilled as them but he had the power to hurt any opponent if he could land. He probably would've needed slightly better stamina too but he beat Fury in the amateurs, forced a count from Povetkin and was unlucky enough to have to go up against drugs cheats Tony Thompson and Erkan Teper while in his prime.

Realistically though, even with a good chin he would've lost to most top 10s if he didn't land that big shot. You could compare him to Zhang but Zhang has faster hands, as much power and a better chin but with similar cardio issues.

Should never have gone in with Thompson again, terrible management. He needed to face pillow fisted heavies to get a ranking and then go all in with a major title shot

A pillow fisted heavy like Hammer who KO'd Price? Once he got past a certain level he was always going to be in trouble, even if he pulled through.

Hey guys. Can someone change Price's 'loss' to Teper?

Price's loss against Teper was officially changed to a no contest by the Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer (BDB; Association of German Professional Boxers), the hosting countries governing body. Originally, the EBU, who sanctioned the fight, seemingly maintained the original result as valid. However, It seems the EBU was never officially informed about Teper's doping violations at the time, which likely contributed to the fight results remaining unchanged. Latterly, his win against Price was indeed later changed to a No Contest.

This suggests that the lack of communication between regulatory bodies at the time played a role in how the results were handled, rather than the EBU actively maintaining them as valid despite the doping issues.

Price was unlucky, matched poorly, and his losses came against drug cheats.
We have been talking about what to do with. Fisher, I think carefully matched he could get a British title shot, Price was so much better.
But on the other hand Price was never good enough to win a world title, but was good enough to win the European and have a world title shot.

i wonder if having a tougher chin woulda helped him mentally....and perhaps in turn help him relax and not use nervous energy

he was certainly better offensively than he was as a whole

He was too stiff. He was shoulder rolling on the inside whenever it goes there. That wouldn't have ended well. Someone like Chisora would always beat him. He just gets hit too much. He should have taken the Wlad Klitschko fight instead of the Tony Thompson fight and just went for it. He was looking like a deer in the headlights at an arena for a Wlad fight though. I just don't think he was a confident guy. The celebrations after beating the likes of Audley says it all. Jumping around and screaming as if he won the lottery.

He definitely used up too much nervous energy when fighting. Been calm under pressure has allowed fighters like Chisora & Allen to not gas in fights despite being overweight.

Having said that I’ve always believed it isn’t normal for these 250+ pound fighters to be able to fight at a high pace for 12 rounds.

We know Fury, Whyte & Miller are all drug cheats.

We’ve seen Parker’s sudden change in fortunes since working with Dr Uz.

We’ve seen other fighters chance physically during their career.

Price’s biggest issue was probably that he fought clean. As sad as that is.

I think it would have done after the Thompson fights. I don’t remember him having the same amount of nervous energy before those fights as he did in the rematch and after that.

Re: him fighting Fury in 2012, that would have been the perfect time for the fight. Price was still more confident and aggressive with less of the nervous energy and Tyson could have one fight where he looked great followed by a poor performance.

I think Fury would have won but given how hard Price hits, it wouldn’t have surprised me if Price would have taken him out. It was a similar time to him being floored by Pajkic and not long before the Cunningham fight.

It wasn’t just his chin he tired out really quickly. If you could extend him you had him. Even in his distance fight vs Zavarotnyi you could see how heavily he was breathing in between rounds.

He had a bad chin, but he also had very poor stamina too and piss poor ring IQ. Thompson 2--it wasn't his chin. It was that he gassed by round 4. Then, didn't have the intelligence to take a knee when Thompson was whacking at him.

I don't think he'd have had a great career, even if his chin was better. The first time he got dragged into the late rounds, he'd gas. He also seemed to lack that killer instinct. He could absolutely bang with the best of them, but he just wasn't fierce enough or aggressive enough to capitalise.

I think he tired due to him being so nervous, possibly down to the lack of confidence he had in his ability to take a punch.

I personally think we should change results the other way around.

James Toney W12 John Ruiz is still the way I see it in my book.

Mike Tyson KO 3 Andrew Golota is still the way I see it in my book.

And David Price still got knocked out by Erkan Teper and Tony Thompson.

It should be noted I have nothing to do with how they keep the records, or who's records they consider to be Official, but this is the way I see these results in my mind because that's what happened.

It was a chin and stamina problem. Double whammy.

I think his career might have gone a slightly different route if his team had made the next logical step of taking on michael sprott instead of the Tiger. He would probably have blasted Sprott out early too and maybe could have built momentum for a major fight at some point.

Instead they went for Thompson who was hardly a monster but I remember at the time it seemed a bit of a leap in levels.

The decision to rematch was as ridiculous as Joyce v zhang.

Yeah, going from beating Audley and Shelton to Thompson who had only lost to the Klitschkos was a very bad move. They should have found someone a step up from them but not as good as Thomspon first--someone like Albert Sosnowski or Alex Leapai or Tor Hamer or Safety Pin Johnson. Actually Johnson would have been a good one for Price to get some rounds in as he had a solid chin.

Pricey's biggest problem was the size of his suit.

He was ringside once wearing the biggest suit I've ever seen

Yeah, I remember Fury was getting knocked down by right hands a lot at that point in his career. I think I was expecting that to happen with Price.
