Kieran Molloy-Kaisee Benjamin and Shakan Pitters-Brad Rea set for June 28

Ireland’s Kieran Molloy is to fight Kaisee Benjamin at the Pearse Stadium in Galway, Ireland on June 28.

Their welterweight fight will be supported by the European light-heavyweight title fight between Englishmen Shakan Pitters and Brad Rea, and the English-Irish super-middleweight contest between Lerrone Richards and Joe Ward.

“If you’re a young lad growing up in Galway, Pearse Stadium is the home of your heroes,” said the 26-year-old Molloy. “One of my favourite daydreams as a youngster starting out in boxing was one day walking out into a packed Pearse Stadium and hearing Galway roar. On Saturday June 28th I get to live that dream for real and I can’t wait.

“Galway people really get behind their own – whether it’s hurling, football or boxing – and I am so grateful for all the support I get. I am looking forward to going out there and putting on a great show for everyone and making a big statement about my intentions to bring major world titles to Galway.”

Molloy defeated Italy’s Riccardo Crepaldi at York Hall in London in April. Benjamin, of England and 29 years old, fought his compatriot Dalton Smith for the British junior-welterweight title in 2022 and lost via unanimous decision.

“Kieran Molloy has got all the makings of a megastar – much like Barry McGuigan back in the day, he appeals to everyone from fight fans to little old ladies,” said the promoter Izzy Asif of GBM Sports. “He’s an incredible mixture of cold technical ability and ferocious killer instinct.

“We’re proud and excited at GBM to be giving this future world champion a homecoming like this. He’s got a tough test against the very experienced Kaisee Benjamin. It’s going to be a hell of a fight and an electric atmosphere inside the famous Pearse Stadium.”

GBM ANNOUNCE SEAN MCCOMB SIGNING, MAKES PROMOTIONAL DEBUT ON JUNE 28 SHOW IN GALWAY

After GBM's successful first stadium show in Doncaster on Friday night, they have since announced a new signing to their ever-growing stable with the introduction of junior welterweight contender Sean McComb.

McComb (18-2, 5 KOs), who won and made two defences of the WBO European title before losing in a career-best opportunity against Arnold Barboza Jr in April 2024, hasn't boxed since. Next month though, the 32-year-old will end a 14-month layoff 200 miles from home.

The opponent and round length has not yet been disclosed, though he spoke of a readiness to compete in a six, eight or ten-rounder to shake off the ring rust after an emotional rollercoaster that should've culminated with far more success and fanfare.

His career, ala Maxi Hughes in the division below, was expected to catapult and opportunities arise after a masterful display against then-unbeaten Barboza on the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia undercard at Brooklyn's Barclays Center in New York.

Instead, judges Don Trella (97-93) and Tom Shreck (96-94) had a differing view than the vast majority watching to give Barboza a split decision nod.

Talk of an immediate rematch quickly went cold without a contractual clause negotiated and without a firm promotional deal, any promises or well-intentioned plans went unfulfilled.

As he told The Ring in March, the Belfast southpaw has been proactively ticking over while searching for further opportunities against quality domestic names to prove his Barboza display wasn't a fluke and rather his long-awaited breakthrough performance.

Barboza's activity on away soil saw many praise him for risk-taking adventures afterwards, having since scored decision wins over Jose Carlos Ramirez and Jack Catterall, the latter to win interim WBO world honours, before being outclassed by Teofimo Lopez on May 2.

One of the top comments on social media underneath this signing refers back to the Barboza result and a long-held wish for the two men to do battle a second time.

Last month, McComb told the Belfast Telegraph that after being misled in the immediate aftermath, he's now over a potential rematch. While not currently ranked by any of the four major sanctioning bodies, will do whatever it takes to earn a world title shot in due course.

"Back in the changing room, his dad was talking about getting me over for 'lefty' [southpaw] sparring. I asked about the rematch but they suddenly were saying, 'The promoters deal with that' and I knew then, they would never give it to me. Pete [Taylor, his coach] said it was going to put me in a worse position - nobody would want to fight me.

"I just don't want to be known for the Barboza fight and now I don't even want the rematch. I would love Lopez to skelp him, I can bypass to get my own crack at the world title so I can prove how good I am."

Barboza's stock has predictably fallen and his WBO ranking is now No. 5 after his first defeat, one many feel was long overdue after two high-profile split decision victories over ten months, though it's not an avenue he's likely to pursue in a rebuild anytime soon.

McComb, ranked No. 6 before the Barboza fight, accepted an offer to fight two-division world champion Devin Haney on the Beterbiev-Bivol undercard in October. Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) opted instead to sit the rest of the year out before an underwhelming points win over Jose Ramirez in Times Square earlier this month.

There was an opportunity to box at the SSE Arena on March 1 as part of the Paddy Donovan vs. Lewis Crocker undercard, though it 'didn't feel like the right step' and it appears he'll venture down a different path after agreeing terms to face Pierce O'Leary (16-0, 9 KOs) on last month's Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn undercard at Tottenham.

O'Leary, who defends his WBC International title when facing Liam Dillon (15-2-1, 3 KOs) for the EBU strap vacated by WBC's No. 1-ranked contender Dalton Smith on June 7, could be an option in his home city as a potential headline fight at year's end.

"Things are starting to look more positive, if I have to rebuild again, I will. I've been actively training and sparring, there is the conversation between me and Pierce at the 3Arena. Hopefully he comes through his European title fight and can defend it against me in a huge all-Irish fight."

SHAKAN PITTERS-BRADLEY REA EUROPEAN TITLE FIGHT MOVED FROM GALWAY TO HULL, WILL NOW HEADLINE

The European light heavyweight title fight between Shakan Pitters and Brad Rea will now take place at Hull’s Connexin Live Arena on June 28.

The fight had initially been due to take place in Galway, Ireland, on the same date and act as the chief support to a welterweight fight between local favourite, Keiran Molloy, and Kaisee Benjamin.

The vacant EBU 175lb title clash between Pitters (20-2, 7 KOs), former British champion, and Rea (20-1, 10 KOs) will now headline the rescheduled event that will be aired exclusively by DAZN.

“I’m really looking forward to this European light-heavyweight title clash between Shakan Pitters and Brad Rea. These are two very hungry fighters who both know that winning this title is the key to securing big future opportunities and making a name at world level. This will be a hell of contest, with both boxers leaving everything in the ring,” Izzy Asif, GBM Sports CEO, said via statement.

“We were looking forward to making our first visit to Ireland but due to circumstances beyond our control this event will now take place in the UK with a new main event. GBM thanks the thousands of fans who bought tickets for Galway and we look forward to visiting the Emerald Isle in the future. In the meantime, they can return all tickets to their point of sale for a full refund.”

Pitters and Rea will both be relieved that the fight has survived the change of venue and they can now concentrate on bringing a complicated saga to an end.

In February, Pitters was due to challenge then-EBU titleholder Daniel Blenda Dos Santos in Sheffield, England.

Dos Santos was forced out of the fight just days before after a problem with his pre-fight brain scan came to light. The Frenchman was quickly cleared and the contest was rebooked for London in April.

This time, Pitters, 35, withdrew during fight week after being hospitalised with chest issues.

Rea leapt at the opportunity to replace him but was left heartbroken when Dos Santos pulled himself out of the fight just hours before the first bell citing illness.

After seeing their champion withdraw from his second title defence within the space of two months, the EBU stripped Dos Santos of his title and ordered the medically cleared Pitters and Rea to contest the newly vacated belt.

Rea’s has suffered more than his fair share of bad luck and his heart will have skipped a beat when he saw his phone light up with the name of his manager, Steve Wood. This time, however, he received good news.

After announcing himself on the national stage with a pair of stunning first-round knockouts of the previously undefeated Lee Cutler and Craig McCarthy, Rea was unceremoniously sent back to the small halls after losing a hard-fought decision to future EBU middleweight champion Tyler Denny in November 2022.

The 27 year-old from Stretford spent two years rebuilding as a light heavyweight before being handed an unlikely chance to announce himself on the world stage. Earlier this year, he was matched with Swedish prospect Constantino Nanga on the undercard of the undisputed light heavyweight title fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

Nanga’s late withdrawal cost Rea his spot on the Saudi Arabian showpiece event.

Opportunity came calling again just six weeks later, but Dos Santos’ illness robbed him of another big chance.

Now, he and Pitters will headline a card which also includes a return to action for world-ranked junior welterweight Sean McComb (18-2, 5 KOs), heavyweight Hughie Fury (30-3, 17 KOs) and middleweight hope Shakiel Thompson (14-0, 10 KOs).

Kieran Molloy announces split with GBM Sports after European title fight cancelled

Kieran Molloy’s European title opportunity on June 28 against Kaisee Benjamin has been cancelled.

Molloy, 11-0 (6 KOs), announced Wednesday that his fight was off, ending a run of events which saw the fight, originally set to headline at Pearse Stadium in Molloy’s hometown of Galway, Ireland, moved to the undercard of a show in Hull, England before finally being nixed altogether.

The 26-year-old also announced that he was parting ways with GBM Sports, which had promoted him since March of 2024, resulting in four straight wins, all in England.

“I’m devastated to share that my upcoming European title fight at Pearse Stadium has been cancelled. The decision was made by the promoter, GBM Sports, and came as a complete shock to me and my team,” Molloy wrote in a social media post.

Molloy adds that he had only received his tickets to sell on June 3, at media day for the show in Galway, and says he still managed to move 2,100 of the 2,500 he received from the promotion in just five days. Ticket refunds will be “organized and processed as soon as possible,” said Molloy.

GBM announced on June 9 that the card would be moved “due to circumstances beyond our control.”

“This was more than just a fight for me - it was a dream come true to headline a major event in my home country, in front of the people who’ve backed me from the very start,” said Molloy.

“This is a tough one to take, but we’ll bounce back. Better nights are ahead and I promise we’ll bring something special to Galway one day in the future when the time is right.”

The card will still proceed and air on DAZN, with Shakan Pitters, 20-2 (7 KOs), and Bradley Rea, 20-1 (10 KOs), set to meet for the vacant European light heavyweight title. An updated poster for the show shared Wednesday by GBM Sports showed the Molloy-Benjamin fight had been removed.

Disappointing for Molloy but an understandable decision by Izzy if the show in Ireland was going to lose a lot of money.

That’s the risk promoters take.

I’m not saying they should accept losing money but they’d have done a detailed P&L on the show and would have known the risk. He’d have also known the potential upside too.

Feel bad for Malloy that his fight has seemingly been binned off like that.

The whole thing comes across as extremely amateurish. 6 Weeks to push a massive stadium show, in an area that's not exactly heartland of boxing in Ireland, isn't enough.

Unless it was a Phil Jeffries style Stadium of Light show, where they're only looking to use one stand and not expecting a massive attendance. But if that were the case, the event would likely still be going ahead, seeing as Molloy sold 2100 tickets himself already!

I reckon they chanced their arm, hoping Galway would latch onto this in the 10's of thousands, despite not making much of a media push, knowing they could fall back to somewhere like Hull if it didn't.

Newstalk had an interview with Molloy last week, however why it took that long to get National media talking about it I've no idea.
They should have had RTE, Virgin Media, Newstalk all doing multiple segments on it for the last few weeks with various angles to build it up, because to sell a stadium show efficiently you'll need all the casuals you can get and with no disrespect to Molloy, he's not exactly a household name at the top level of boxing.
