Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
on March 8, 1971. Is it too soon for Big George ?
Re: Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
I agree. He'd have probably still been able to hurt Joe early, but I don't think he would've been able to maintain his poise enough to continuously land big shots, and get him outta there the way he did a few years later.
Re: Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
Very true. I also feel Joe would probably be at his absolute peak around this time.

Like I said it then, and said it now. The Smokin' Joe Frazier that fought his ass off in the Fight of the Century would have beaten any heavyweight of any era. It was probably the greatest performance by a fighter in a much anticipated and historical fight of all-time.
Re: Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
Joe came in at 205 for that fight. I don’t feel like typing out a long rebuttal. I think you have good historical knowledge of some of the fighters we discuss. But do you not see the contradiction in saying a 205 pounder could beat any heavyweight in history after … many posts stating certain heavyweight greats who came into fights at 210-215 could not compete with todays giants? Please tell me what I’m missing in this logic. Seriously

Smokin' Joe Frazier was stronger than Joe Louis.
Smokin' Joe Frazier was much more willed and determined and had a devastating left hook. Probably, the greatest left hook in boxing history.
Smokin' Joe knows how to fight inside.
I have never said that today's giants were the 8th Wonders of the World. But, they would be too big and strong for Joe Louis. Plus, Louis' chin would not make it better.
Re: Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
Ya man, I know how good Joe was. I’m talking about the size thing you mention frequently. You don’t see the contradiction there?

Fought his ass off so hard that he was never the same again. Well done Ali, you picked the wrong man to monumentally piss off before literally the Fight Of The Century.elmersalsa wrote: ↑01 Jun 2025, 13:12 Like I said it then, and said it now. For all of Ali's genius in prefight mind fuckery, this one back fired spectacularly.
(Not to take anything away from Joe, I absolutely agree, tough to pick against this version of Joe against anyone)

Smokin' Joe Frazier was UNBELIEVABLE that night. I think that it was the greatest performance of a fighter in a big event of that magnitude. Muhammad Ali also fought terrific. Both fought their asses off. They fought on even terms. It's just that Smokin' Joe was better that night.witherspoon wrote: ↑01 Jun 2025, 14:03Fought his ass off so hard that he was never the same again. And after that fight, he was never the same fighter again. That fight took his toll on him.
Re: Joe Frazier versus George Foreman
There's also no real reason to say Joe Frazier definitely had a better chin than Louis since he was stopped more times than Louis, and dropped almost as many times in a lot fewer fights, but he never acknowledges that either.
Frazier and Louis were the same size save for a few inches in height, but Louis is too small.
Louis had a great right hand, uppercut, left hook and jab.
Frazier had a great left hook.
But Louis was too primitive.

Too soon.
