The future of boxing on Sky Sports

I read that the Top Rank deal with Sky Sports finished in May. I guess we’ll find out this weekend if that’s accurate.

Yeah, so no sign of Keyshawn Davis on sky this weekend, so that means the bums have stopped showing any good American fights. Hopeless.

Theres the Aussie fight on Sunday which I think is DAZN, and the Japanese title fight as well ..God knows what channel that will be on

The Sunday show in Japan is a Top Rank co promotion I think so would normally be shown on Sky Sports.

The lack of it being shown on Sky is another sign of the end of their Top Rank deal.

Hopefully DAZN are able to get U.K. rights for Top Rank shows.

It was a crap undercard so nice that he’s fighting on it but Shalom was talking only last week as though he’s got a headline announcement coming up.

Shalom was interviewed a few times earlier and all he really said was that there would be a an announcement soon.

It’s the first time I’ve heard him talk and not be stead fast in that Boxxer will continue with Sky. He said there won’t be any announcement in the next week or so.

It’s a shame if this is the end for regular boxing on Sky Sports.

This is bullshit-speak for "Sky is dropping us /not renewing us"

He's also claiming to have "multiple offers" from which he will "choose which is best"

Multiple offers lol. Yeah right. Boxxer such a hot property that Sky is dropping it, what a bidding war there must be. Channel 5, DAZN? UK Gold, Men & Motors?

He's also saying "major announcement" soon.

Pound to a penny that announcement is Eubank related not broadcast related. Or maybe some announcement about some goofy "partnership" with Goldstar, who will then go on to poach their main fighters lol.

Even if DAZN or TNT picked them up, what a massive step down from Sky. Which boxers would sign /stay with them when they could go to an actual viable promoter and make the most of their short window as a prize fighter?

If they emerge from the next few weeks with anything other than a lock solid exclusive Sky multi year contract like before, they are fucked. Sky was their only selling point to the boxers, Boxxer was just a conduit to being on Sky.

Without that, what's the offer? Does Boxxer really strike anyone as an outfit that can make a realistic success of your career if Sky isn't involved?

Channel 5 with its 150-200k per show is about their level. Not even 2mil a year vs 8-10mil per year from Sky.

But any broadcaster stepping in to sign these guys to a multi year exclusive deal if sky drop them, would be out of their minds.

I’d imagine he’s in discussions with Sky. Who knows what for at this stage.

I’d imagine other broadcasters are interested but they’re not going to get close to what Sky were paying and obviously not going to get close to the exposure.

I’d be surprised if Goldstar do a deal with Boxxer - Spencer seems to have a better relationship with Frank and Eddie.

I’m not sure why DAZN would want them given the other promoters they work with and I’m not sure the fighters would be happy either as the primary reason they’d have signed with Boxxer is Sky. Being on DAZN with Boxxer would mean that they’ve got the smallest main promoter on there and the least well known network.

Whatever happens, it’d be a real shame if Sky drop out.

I’d be surprised if many people know the detail. It’s a shame there’s no front person for Sky Sports that would be able to answer.

Like it seems the Top Rank deal has finished with zero mention from anyone.

Without SKY BOXXER will be nothing , if they get their shows on DAZN it will be minor league compared to what FW and Matchroom can put out and will be paid accordingly.

I’m also not sure why DAZN would want Boxxer. Would they get enough new subs to cover the cost of shows? No.

Also, the reportedly several of their bigger names have deals that tie them into Sky so, I think, if Boxxer leave Sky then they’d be able to get out of their deals.

Would it not then make sense to go with one of the other 2 main U.K. promoters on DAZN who are better at promoting?

I used to like Shalom but I find him more grating as the years have gone on. He said yesterday that Callum Simpson is the biggest ticket seller in the country. They’ve sold I think around 13k for tomorrow which is great but on the same day Wardley is headlining in Ipswich and they’ve done over 20k.

He was also talking about how they’ve broken viewership records and PPVs records at Sky. They broke viewership records because Sky started to put several of their shows on Showcase (the old Sky One) and also put a couple on YouTube too. So yeah…no surprise they got big viewership. The line re: record PpVs simply isn’t true. There’s no way a PPV they promoted got close to the peak levels ppvs were doing 5-10 years ago on Sky.

The bulk of the sky workers (camera men, production crew etc) are employed by Sky and work on the range of sports. I know someone who usually covers the boxing but also does golf and tennis too. They won’t know what’s going on.

The pundits i’d imagine are paid like consultants. So when there’s work to do they’ll get asked and paid to do it. Wouldn’t have thought there’s any point having say a Matt Macklin on a salary because the shows aren’t frequent enough. Again, I’d imagine they won’t know what’s going on either until a formal decision is reached re: next steps.

Woolhouse, Macklin & Nelson are all salaried, as was Smith and Ed Robinson. What happens now though, I don't know.
