I'd say Legendary is fair if you count his Amateur and Pro career, but strictly as a Pro he would've been better suited to have started earlier. It's a shame he didn't.goose 5 wrote: ↑05 Jun 2025, 08:41 To me, Loma is overrated. He wasn't Willie Pep or Sugar Ray Leonard. I hold the Teofimo Lopez bout against him because he could have won that bout. I thought Salido edged him but the weight and Salido's fouls mitigate the loss. Overall, he was excellent but not a legendary great, imo.

The way it played out reminds me a lot of Hopkins vs Jermain Taylor 1.gregregegg wrote: ↑12 May 2025, 16:22 Flew a bit to close to the sun a few times, so his career dosent look insanely good… but I’d rather that than him beating undefeated because he made salida loose the weight, and put a hydration clause on Haney and teo…
One thing that does and always will frustrate me is the first half of the teo fight…. When he started fighting he just looked better but he took the first 6 rounds off…
Where the defending Champion only definitively won 4 rounds, but they were the most clear cut rounds of the bout by a lot.
Similarly to that fight. It didn't feel like Teofimo won it as much as it felt like Loma lost it.

When I got the news notification on my phone I initially thought it said he died so it was a relief when I realized he retired

One of the best featherweight boxer's of all time
Had to go up weights because of how easy it was for him at feather
Look at GGG...as good as he was never once gambled with boxing heavier fighters

VASILIY LOMACHENKO, 37, ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM BOXING AFTER GLITTERING CAREER
Vasiliy Lomachenko has retired from boxing at the age of 37 after a glittering professional career in which he became a three-division champion.
As an amateur, the Ukrainian amassed a stunning record of 396-1 and won two Olympic gold medals, at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, before becoming a pound-for-pound star in the paid ranks.
His last outing was against George Kambosos Jr in May 2024 at Perth, Australia’s RAC Arena.
‘Loma’ won by 11th-round TKO and picked up the IBF lightweight title, which will now become vacant. Raymond Muratalla, the ‘interim’ titleholder at 135 pounds, will be elevated to full champion after beating Zaur Abdullaev on points last month.
In a video message posted to social media, Lomachenko said: “I’m grateful for every victory and defeat inside the ring and outside the ring. I’m thankful that as my career comes to an end, I've gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory, not just in the ring.
"I thank god for my honest and wonderful and kind parents for their care, love and warmth I've felt throughout my life. My father taught me not only boxing, but how to be a role model for my own children.
"I've made many mistakes in life and in the gym but he was always by my side, correcting me when needed. I have many warm memories.
"To my family, you have always stood by me. You shared in my victories and you felt the pain of my losses. Those losses only made us stronger."
Lomachenko signed with Top Rank and began his pro career in 2013, competing for a world title in only his second fight against Orlando Salido, losing a controversial split decision.
His third bout brought world championship success, however, as he outpointed Gary Russell Jr to win the vacant WBO featherweight title. His win equalled the record set by Thailand's Saensak Muangsurin for winning a world title in the fewest professional fights.
In his seventh fight, Lomachenko became a two-division champion when he beat Roman Martinez by 5th-round KO to pick up the WBO junior-lightweight title.
Wins over Nicholas Walters, Miguel Marriaga and fellow amateur sensation Guillermo Rigondeaux followed at 130 pounds.
Lomachenko made his lightweight debut at Madison Square Garden in New York City in May 2018, winning The Ring and WBA titles from Jorge Linares, who he stopped in the 10th-round, having been knocked down himself earlier in the fight.
Lomachenko further unified in his next fight, beating Jose Pedraza by unanimous decision to win the WBO 135-pound belt. He then beat Brits Anthony Crolla and Luke Campbell, the latter of which took place at London's O2 Arena, with the WBC title also on the line.
He suffered the second defeat of his career in his next fight, however, as he was beaten by Teofimo Lopez, who won with unanimous scores of 116-112, 117-111, 119-109.
Non-title victories over the likes of Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz followed but Lomachenko lost to Devin Haney, with the American's undisputed lightweight titles on the line, in a close, entertaining, back-and-forth encounter at the MGM Grand in May 2023.
His final fight would be against Australian Kambosos Jr a year later.
It was hotly-anticipated that, in November 2024, Lomachenko would take on boxing superstar Gervonta Davis in a fight fans had lusted after for years, but the Ukrainian would elect to take a break from boxing instead.
That break, however, has ultimately led to the end of his illustrious in-ring career.
Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum said, "It’s been an honor for all of us at Top Rank to promote the pro boxing career of Vasiliy Lomachenko. He was a generational champion, and we will all miss his participation in the sport."

Promoter Bob Arum says it’s been ‘an honor’ working with Lomachenko
Having worked with Ukrainian great Vasiliy Lomachenko throughout his career, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said it has “been an honor.”
Earlier today, Lomachenko announced on social media that he was retiring, aged 37, and sunsetting his 18-3 (12 KOs) career, having won titles in three weight classes and ensuring he will make it into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Lomachenko, one of the amateur greats, won a world title in just his third fight, and wrapped up his third world title in a third division after just 12 contests, and in 2022 he paused his decorated career to go home and join a territorial defense battalion after the Russian invasion.
“It’s been an honor for all of us at Top Rank to promote the pro boxing career of Vasiliy Lomachenko,” said Arum. “He was a generational champion, and we will all miss his participation in the sport.”
Scotland’s former world champion Alex Arthur spoke for many in the sport when he said: “We might not see anything like Lomachenko again for 100 years.”
In a statement, the WBO said: “Lomachenko burst onto the boxing scene with unmatched skill and dedication, quickly establishing himself as one of the most technically proficient and electrifying fighters of his generation. As he transitions out of the ring, Lomachenko’s legacy remains secure, which will surely be celebrated and recognized with his well-deserved induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.”

Re: Vasiliy Lomachenko has Retired!
Loma one of my all time favorites, total original style, Great 126 and 130 pounder very good 135 pounder.
Favorite wins Gary Russell Jr at 126 and Linares at 135.
He was undersized at 135 and once he couldn't throw his cork screw left hook due to torn labrum he didn't have that ko punch as much at 135 without that punch.
Only stain on his record was loss to Lopez . Layoff in that fight hurt him along with teo's size anyways, glad he is getting out
thanks for the memories.

I thought he would have closed the show out with a fight with Tank
Re: Vasiliy Lomachenko has Retired!
Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez, Lomachenko (before he retired), Keyshawn Davis, Abdullah Mason, Naoya Inoue, Devin Haney.
Any one of those would be solid fights.
He'll duck 'em all. It's who he is. It's the way he'll be remembered. The man that maybe could've, but didn't.

But how good is he
Re: Vasiliy Lomachenko has Retired!
He's one of the biggest money draws of this era, so I guess in that regard he's been properly handled, but unfortunately for me he's probably hands down the guy that wasted his talent more than any other from his era.
We still don't really know how good he is. I suspect his best has already come and gone in all the cherry picked fights.

Loma wanted Title Fight upon his highly touted double Olympic Gold Medalist Pro debut with a 396-1 record with his sole loss being subsequently beat the next 2 X. Signed with Arum who didn't want to embarrass Boxing, so he had to settle with a very good Jose Luis Ramirez, 25-3 pro record who Loma KOed.
Next the dirty Salido forfeited his Feather Title on the scales to weighin near the welter limit where Loma had to make featherweight for the Title.
Next the infinitely most abjectly stooopid/crooked judge of his era, Laurence Cole, allowed Salido to low blow, hit on the break, rabbit punch, and clinch all night
The clincher is after Loma and his pop trainer collaborated, he went out to knock out Salido and had him going, but repeatedly Cole interfered to break the action.
Go figure Boxing and Boxing Fans always complaining about the results that they actually support...
Re: Vasiliy Lomachenko has Retired!
Salido wasn't near welterweight on the scales, he re-hydrated to welter.

Must sting a bit, having two losses on your record thanks to robbery because of corruption in America.

And the Haney bout was a pure robbery too. Teo won fair and square but without the injury I believe Loma beats him.
The Haney fight I haven't watched since it happenned but I remember it being a could've gone either way type of fight but I do need to properly score it to be sure.
Loma could have retired unbeaten but after 300 odd amateur fights he then had to learn that professional boxing is quite different to the amateurs.
Especially when you have grown up in a country that was once a part of the Soviet Union.
Las Vegas, the capital of US boxing, is literally in another country, another world.
Money changes everything.

Re: Vasiliy Lomachenko has Retired!
Wouldn't it be something else if Loma started having exhibition bouts, just like Floyd's been doing for awhile, and then when asked why don't you just go ahead and comeback for a pro bout Loma tells the interviewer, Nah, I got sick and tired of the corruption of pro boxing, this is a better route for me. Let the audience make they're own individual decisions and opinions and such. I don't trust them corrupt judges and pro refs anymore.
That'd be so Epic and Such a Profoundly Real Analysis and Statement, and middle finger to Pro Boxing bouts, and they're corrupt judges and refs.

Selimov told WBN, “I think Lomachenko didn’t send me into retiring first. (I can say) It’s my choice to retire,” said Selimov.
“I think I can do more than what I do (against Lomachenko), but now it’s his choice to retire. He is the best in world boxing, and I can say we fought good fights.”
