Jean Pascal in, Yamil Perala out of interim WBC title fight against Michal Cieslak on June 28

It will be Jean Pascal and not Yamil Peralta who will fight Michal Cieslak next for the WBC’s interim cruiserweight title, according to the sanctioning body.

Peralta, 17-1-1 (9 KOs), is ranked second by the WBC and Cieslak, 27-2 (21 KOs) is third. But the Peralta-Cieslak bout “found complications to be staged”, the WBC said.

So in will step Pascal, 37-7-1 (21 KOs), a former lineal light-heavyweight champion, at, according to his most recent social-media post, the Place Bell in Quebec, Canada on June 28. Pascal had one fight at cruiserweight in 2018 and then didn’t return to the weight class until September, when he scored a 10th-round knockout over the 13-0 Terry Osias.

Pascal is 42 years old and not ranked by the WBC at cruiserweight – not in its top 15 and not even in its top 40, per the ratings released earlier in April. The IBF is the only sanctioning body with Pascal in its top 15 at 200lbs, slotting him at eight.

Pascal is from Laval, Quebec, just outside of Montreal.

The winner of Cieslak-Pascal would then need to face Peralta.

The WBC also has its primary world title on the line in the coming weeks – Badou Jack, who edged Pascal via split decision in a light-heavyweight fight in 2019, will defend against Noel Mikaelyan on the undercard of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-William Scull on May 3.

Jack was previously the WBC’s titleholder but was named “champion in recess” as he pondered a move to the bridgerweight division. Mikaelyan won the vacant WBC title in November 2023.

But Mikaelyan was unable to defend against Ryan Rozicki in 2024, and Jack wanted to return to the ring. So Mikaelyan and Jack changed places, Jack being reinstated while Mikaelyan became the “champion in recess”.

The May 3 show was originally supposed to feature Jack defending against Rozicki. When Rozicki got injured in training camp, Mikaelyan stepped in.

JEAN PASCAL VS. MICHAL CIESLAK FOR WBC INTERIM CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE ON JUNE 28

Jean Pascal will replace Yamil Peralta and face Michal Cieslak for the WBC’s interim cruiserweight title, the sanctioning body announced.

Pascal said the bout will take place at the Place Bell in Quebec, Canada on June 28.

"Back at the top of the food chain," the former lineal light heavyweight champion Pascal wrote on Instagram Stories. "They underestimated me. They forgot about me. But the top ... that's where I live."

The WBC released a statement to address the situation.

"The cruiserweight category has had a variety of complications in recent years. The interim title, which was authorized for Cieslak versus Peralta, found complications to be staged. Thus the board of governors authorized the interim title to be contested between Cieslak and Pascal, with the winner committed to fight Peralta."

As for the regular title, WBC champion Badou Jack will face WBC champion in recess Noel Mikaelian on May 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the undercard of the undisputed super middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and William Skull on DAZN PPV.

Mikaelian replaced the injured Ryan Rozicki to fight Jack for the title he never lost in the ring. Mikaelian was supposed to face Rozicki last year but the fight was cancelled three separate times. During its annual convention in December, the WBC elevated the 41-year-old Jack to full champion status even though he last fought in February 2023 and vacated the title soon after beating Ilunga Junior Makabu. Mikaelian knocked out Makabu in November of that year and has not fought since.

Pascal (37-7-1) has fought just three times since 2019 and wasn’t listed in the WBC’s top 40 rankings released earlier this month. The 42-year-old Haitian-born Canadian last fought in September and knocked out Terry Osias in 10 rounds.

The past-his-prime Pascal has had a reputable 20-year career. He holds wins against Jack, Marcus Browne, Chad Dawson, Lucian Bute, and Yuniesky Gonzalez. He's also lost to Dmitry Bivol, Carl Froch, Eleider Alvarez, Bernard Hopkins (one draw), and twice to Sergey Kovalev.

Cieslak (27-2, 21 KOs), a 36-year-old from Poland, is rated No. 3 by the WBC. He beat Felix Valera via third-round knockout in October. Cieslak's pair of losses have come in title shots against Lawrence Okolie in 2022 and Makabu in 2020.

That situation has been such a farce, I'm half expecting to get a call if things keep up like this.

Jean Pascal-Michal Cieslak official for June 28 in Quebec, Canada

The fight between Jean Pascal and Michal Cieslak has been officially announced for June 28, confirming Boxing Scene’s report from April.

Pascal-Cieslak will headline at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada, just outside of the city of Montreal. The winner will be the WBC’s interim cruiserweight titleholder.

Poland’s Cieslak, 27-2 (21 KOs), was originally supposed to face Yamil Peralta for the interim belt, but that fight failed to come to fruition. And so the WBC has sanctioned a bout between the 36-year-old Cieslak, ranked fifth, and Pascal, who had been unrated – not in the WBC’s top 15 and not even in its top 40 – until conveniently entering the rankings at 10th in the WBC’s update on May 12.

Pascal, 37-7-1 (21 KOs) and of Canada, is a former lineal light-heavyweight champion. The 42 year old had one fight at cruiserweight in 2018 and then didn’t return to the weight class until September, when he scored a 10th-round knockout over the 13-0 Terry Osias.

The WBC’s primary titleholder is Badou Jack, who lost to Pascal via split decision in a light-heavyweight fight in 2019. Jack, who is 41 years old, is coming off a majority decision win over Noel Mikaelyan on the undercard of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-William Scull on May 3.

MARCUS BROWNE ITCHING TO HANDLE UNFINISHED BUSINESS AT CRUISERWEIGHT

Marcus Browne is starting over. When you're a 34-year-old professional boxer, that sentence should come with a warning label, but the Staten Island native isn't back in the business for the wrong reasons.

The father-of-three is a former Olympian, a former interim WBA light heavyweight champion, he’s been in some big fights, and his longtime association with PBC means that he made some decent money. And he's used that money well, opening a remodeling company (Kitchen & Flooring Gallery) doing good business in the tri-state area.

Browne (25-2, 16 KOs) does have that feeling of unfinished business, though.

"I'm ready to rock and roll. I want to fight," said Browne, who will make the walk for the first time in nearly two years when facing Olanrewaju Durodola (50-10, 44 KOs) at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada on June 28.

Canada?

"I signed with New Era Sports and they're based out of Canada," he continued. "They have Jean Pascal as well, so I had to do what I got to do and, at this point, the Earth is my turf. So if I had to go to Germany or Pakistan, I would've went there to fight."

So, the Great White North it is. Is he working on his French?

"Oui oui," he responds, and truth be told, it doesn’t sound half bad coming from a New Yorker. But in all seriousness, with Pascal fighting for an interim WBC cruiserweight belt on the same card as Browne-Durodola, the stage is being set for a possible rematch of an entertaining August 2019 bout that saw Browne dropped twice by Pascal before losing a technical decision by a point on each of the judges' scorecards.

And interim or not, Browne wants a world title in his new weight class.

"That's exactly why I'm here," he said. "There's a couple guys that are killers at cruiserweight but to be honest, I feel like I'm one of the killers, and dudes don't want to fight me unless it's for something. So I'm working my way up to get a piece of the hardware so I could be able to have some kind of value."

Browne doesn't seem to have an issue with climbing the ladder again, and it's seemingly made him as hungry as he was when he was at light heavyweight and trading punches with the likes of Pascal, Badou Jack and Artur Beterbiev.

The Jack fight six years ago produced his biggest win to date, but a ninth-round stoppage defeat by Beterbiev in December 2021 stalled his career. He's only fought once since, outpointing Adrian Taylor in his cruiserweight debut, but another long layoff followed that August 2023 appearance.

"I really didn't need a break and didn't want one," Browne said. "It's just boxing and how things work out, especially if you don't have a promoter or anything. But I missed it. I miss being in the ring, in the gym and with my guys every single day, grinding it out, sparring, getting sharper and better, working on a game plan, all of this stuff.

"So I've been offered guys, said yes, and nothing came out of it. I just thought this was another one of those things, but it actually came to fruition, so I'm happy about that."

And after a short stint training in Texas with Derrick James, the member of the 2012 United States Olympic team is back in Staten Island with Gary Stark Sr. and Sherif Younan.

"Old school, man," he said, before revealing the real reason for his comeback.

"Boxing is my first love."

Sometimes, it's hard to give up that first love, and that's precisely where Browne is at. And while such comebacks are usually a recipe for disaster, in this case, he's young enough to still compete at a high level, in a division that isn't as deep as others, and there's a path towards big fights for him. He's also got 25 pounds he didn't have before to play with now as a cruiserweight, so he can eat some of his mom's homecooking.

"Tell me about it," he laughs. "I was a little malnourished at light heavyweight. But I actually feel a hundred percent strong and don’t feel like I'm battling the weight and all the cons of having to deplete yourself making the weight. Not that I'm eating whatever I want to eat because, at the end of the day, I'm still on a strict diet, but it just feels better overall. I feel stronger, too."

How strong? Superman strong. He hasn't felt that way in a while. But he does now.

"I felt like Superman lost his powers," Browne said of his time away from the sport. “It's a one-of-a-kind feeling, like you have superpowers and you're on top of the world. I miss being that guy and my kids looking at me like I'm an average dude. I've never been average.”

AFTER TWICE FALLING SHORT AT WORLD LEVEL, MICHAL CIESLAK 'BUZZING' TO SNAP THE STREAK VS. JEAN PASCAL

Will it be third time lucky for Michal Cieslak?

The 36-year-old Pole has come up short twice when previously contesting cruiserweight world titles. Ilunga Makabu outpointed him for the WBC belt in the Congo five years ago, before Lawrence Okolie dropped him en route to the same result two years later in London for WBO honours.

This time Cieslak will travel to Canada, where he'll face veteran former light-heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal for the vacant interim WBC cruiserweight title on Saturday at Place Bell in Laval, Canada.

"I'm extremely happy and excited," Cieslak (27-2, 21 KOs) told The Ring through Michał Koper. "I can't wait to fight for the title, I'm buzzing. Third time's a charm!"

Cieslak, who had claimed the European title three fights after defeat by a then-unbeaten Okolie, appeared primed to work his way back up the ladder before injury curtailed a big opportunity to defend the strap against Isaac Chamberlain on the undercard of Chris Billam-Smith vs. Richard Riakporhe 2 at Selhurst Park, a London football stadium 12 months ago.

Jack Massey stepped in and surprised Chamberlain with a 12-round unanimous decision win, before parlaying that upset into a short-notice assignment against Ring/IBF titlist Jai Opetaia in Riyadh four months later. Cieslak meanwhile, has toiled in obscurity on the world scene of late.

"It's been a hard time, but the most important is that finally my title fight is confirmed," he said. "It's hard for me to find motivation for all these tune-up fights. The title fight is the different story. I've got my motivation, I feel the energy."

Cieslak has nothing but good things to say about Pascal, welcoming the opportunity that lays ahead.

"I've got a lot respect for him as a fighter, he's experienced, I simply couldn't have imagined a better scenario for me," he continued. "I'm happy for this challenge. Again - I can't wait, man! Some people say I am favorite in this fight, but I don't think about it. All I care [about] is to be in top shape, to win that belt."

The two-time world title challenger has prepared in Spain and Poland before heading to America under the watchful eye of Andrzej Liczik.

He feels that will give him the best opportunity to become champion when he faces Pascal and isn't bothered about being the away fighter again. After all, it's normal for him.

"I don't care where the ring is," he explained. "There will be a lot of my Polish fans in Canada, but I focus only on my training camp. Fans can help you in some way, but it's the boxer who actually fights in the ring.

"I want to win this belt on June 28! I don't want to feel again the way I felt after Okolie fight when I was ashamed to go to my grocery store because I felt I disappointed my fans, my neighbours. The plan is to win on June 28, and then on July 5, get married as a WBC champion."

Pascal (37-7-1, 21 KOs) was a standout amateur, who claimed gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and also represented Canada at the 2004 Olympics. He has been a professional for 20 years, operating in world class since 2009 when he won the WBC title by outpointing Adrian Diaconu and subsequently making four championship defenses.

However, defeats by Bernard Hopkins (UD12), Sergey Kovalev (TKO8) and Dmitry Bivol (UD12) suggested his time at the top table had ended. To his immense credit, 42-year-old Pascal has since revived his career by posting victories over Marcus Browne (TD8), reigning titleholder Badou Jack (SD12) and Fanlong Meng (UD12), though enters this contest after a 12-round decision defeat by Michael Eifert in their IBF light-heavyweight title eliminator.

“Due to an unfortunate circumstance beyond our control the scheduled bout between Marcus ‘Sir’ Browne and Olanrewaju Durodola on June 28 at Place Bell has been cancelled,” New Era stated in its announcement. “Following the boxing federation’s request for additional medical tests, and with the results not meeting standards of the RACJ, New Era Promotion has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the fight, always prioritizing the health and safety of our athletes.”

New Era didn’t clarify if the medical issues pertained to Browne or Durodola.

Cieslak punched holes through Pascal for the duration, one thing Pascal had was he was insanely tough and durable, now that's gone with age and regardless if he's still juicing, it ain't helping
