good tactics/ring smarts

Post by margaret thatcher »

what are some things you'd recommend to a fighter if you were the trainer? can be quite general or more specific depending on the opponent

but 2 things that annoy me:

1. when fighter ends a round doing nothing the last 10-20 seconds
2. when a fighter has no concern about their body language. some guys even if dominating look miserable

end strong so you put something fresh in the judges mind. even if the work isnt particularly high quality. just do something to make it look like you're being active. and look confident so it doesnt seem like the opponent is getting to you

i think the margin between a round won and a round lost can often be very small, and not necessary made up of work that is all that great either

another thing that annoys me, guys who just basically go limp and stop working and just go passive in the clinch, even if they have a hand free. it lends to an appearance that they dont like it rough. unless you have a super limited gas tank get something going.

Maybe a bit of a bizarre and random example but I remember watching Nicky Piper and he had quite a lot of flyaway hair and every-time he got hit his hair would move a lot. I remember thinking at the time why don’t his team suggest he shaves his hair short as his hair was a giveaway that he’d been hit. Haha. For anyone old enough to remember the boxing arcade game Ring King that graphic of the boxer being punched and its hair flaring out always reminded me of Piper. So basically my point is cut your hair short. Anyone remember Mallanaggi getting a haircut mid fight !

I can’t remember what fighter said it but they said they would try and manoeuvre themselves into their corner as the round was ending so they had more time sitting while the other fighter was walking back to their corner.

The obvious one as mentioned already starting and ending the round strong so it sticks in judges mind.

Cardio Cardio Cardio

How many fights have been lost when a fighter runs out of gas?
How many fights have been won when an inferior boxer has more in the tank?
