UNDEFEATED MIDDLEWEIGHT AMARI JONES SIGNS WITH GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS

Undefeated middleweight prospect Amari "The Reaper" Jones (14-0, 12 KOs) has signed a promotional pact with Golden Boy, it was announced on Friday.

Jones is a confidant of Devin Haney and fought under the umbrella of Devin Haney Promotions since turning pro in 2021, but the 23-year-old Oakland-born, Las Vegas-based boxer is beginning a new chapter of his burgeoning boxing career.

Jones, who's trained by Virgil Hunter and now managed by Rick Mirigian, is ranked No. 13 by the IBF at 160 pounds, a division surely in need of fresh contenders.

"At Golden Boy, we hold our fighters to a high standard, and Amari Jones meets every one of them," said Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya. "With world-class trainer Virgil Hunter in his corner, the full support of the Bay Area behind him, and the raw talent that's kept him undefeated, we're confident no one will be able to avoid him as he climbs toward the top of the middleweight division."

Jones, a slick switch-hitter and a former high school football player with amateur boxing pedigree, is excited about the new journey.

"Thank you to Oscar De La Hoya, Eric Gomez, and the Golden Boy team for recognizing my talent and giving me the opportunity and the platform to show it off to the world," said Jones. "Fighters in my division won’t be able to run from the reaper."

The esteemed Hunter has worked with Andre Ward, Andre Berto, and Amir Khan and said Jones is one of the best fighters he's trained since the Hall of Famer and two-division champion Ward retired in 2017.

"Amari has all the makings to become a world champion and stay there," said Hunter.

Mirigian has done a commendable job building former unified junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez into a franchise-like attraction and community leader in Fresno, California for over a decade and he’s looking to do the same for Jones in Northern California.

"Amari has the most potential in the division to be a superstar,” said Mirigian. “I plan on wrapping the Bay Area around him and have big plans with Golden Boy to support him in the near future."

After two fights in 2024, Jones kicked off his 2025 campaign with an eight-round unanimous decision win over Kyle Lomotey on May 10 in Equatorial Guinea.

Amari Jones is excited for next chapter with Golden Boy Promotions

Amari Jones is excited for the next part of his career with Golden Boy Promotions.

Jones, 23, recently made some changes, one of which was a new promoter, the other being a new head coach, Virgil Hunter.

Jones, 14-0 (12 KOs), spent the good portion of his career with Devin Haney Promotions. For some fans, the optics of Oakland, California’s Jones being with another promoter were shocking. For Jones, it is just the next part of his career.

“People wonder about me and Devin Haney Promotions, because it was never publicized,” Jones said. “I saw people say that I switched up on them, but it was far from that.”

Jones, managed by Rick Mirigian, aims to revive a rather sleepy middleweight division, which has failed to pick up steam since Gennadiy Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez left. Despite credible titleholders like Janibek Alimkhanuly, Erislandy Lara and Carlos Adames, the division has fallen into the abyss of boxing, often not being spoken about.

“I am No.12 in the IBF rankings,” Jones said. “I am getting closer to the top 10, which means closer to a world title shot.”

“I want anybody who is ranked ahead of me. I don’t care who it is; if they are ahead of me, I am willing to fight them.”

Jones detailed the process of signing with Golden Boy Promotions, which was announced in June.

“I got an opportunity with Golden Boy Promotions, and I took it,” Jones said. “Golden Boy gave me a good offer.”

One of the key factors for Jones was the broadcast deal Golden Boy Promotions has with DAZN. The other was the relationship the promotion has with the Saudi Arabian boxing financier Turki Alalshikh.

“They are with DAZN, they have a network deal, and they work with Turki, who is bringing big fights to the sport right now,” Jones said. “Those two things weighed heavily on my decision.”
