Dmitry Bivol-Michael Eifert mandatory title fight ordered by IBF

Dmitry Bivol will have to make another uncomfortable choice.

BS has confirmed that the unified light heavyweight champion was ordered to next face IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert. The ruling was handed down on Wednesday, as confirmed by Eifert and promoter SES Boxing.

“Endlich, endlich, endlich (finally, finally, finally),” Eifert said upon receiving the news for his overdue title shot.

The call marks the second time in less than a year that an attempt has been made by the IBF to get Eifert, 13-1 (5 KOs) in the ring for its light heavyweight title. The sanctioning body previously instructed then-undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev, 21-1 (20 KOs), to enter talks with the six-year pro from Magdeburg, Germany.

Beterbiev was just days removed from his majority decision win over Bivol at the time to fully unify the division. Plans were already in place for a rematch, briefly interrupted by the IBF’s order, which was already disclosed to all involved parties before the October 12 undisputed championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

An agreement was eventually reached to allow Beterbiev and Bivol, 24-1 (12 KOs) to run it back this past February 22. Bivol won via majority decision to claim the lineal and undisputed 175lb championship.

Before the IBF could re-enter the frame, the WBC stepped in – as the Mexico City-headquartered organization promised it would – to order Bivol to next face interim WBC titlist David Benavidez, 30-0 (24 KOs). The matter was due to head to a purse bid hearing, only for Bivol to vacate the WBC title, which resulted in Benavidez being upgraded to full beltholder.

It is expected that Bivol – who is still the lineal, WBA, IBF and WBO champ - will do the same with the IBF belt. However, that decision is likely contingent on whether his rubber match with Beterbiev is still on course for later this year.

Otherwise, there exists the possibility that Eifert could face a reigning champion for his first title shot.

The 27-year-old contender became the IBF mandatory challenger after a March 2023 win over former lineal champion Jean Pascal. Eifert claimed an upset unanimous decision victory in their title eliminator on the road in Laval, Canada.

In the time during his stay as mandatory challenger, Eifert has witnessed three fights where the IBF belt was at stake. Prior to the two-fight set with Bivol, Beterbiev defended the lineal and unified IBF, WBC and WBO championship in a seventh-round knockout of Callum Smith last January 13 in Quebec City, Canada.

Meanwhile, Eifert has fought just once in that same period - a second-round knockout of Carlos Jimenez last August 24 at home in Magdeburg.

The downtime could likely prove to be a disservice – in addition to his general lack of experience at the top level. However, Eifert took that risk upon the guarantee from the IBF that would be afforded the Bivol-Beterbiev II winner.

Turki Alalshikh, whose Riyadh Season group financed both Bivol-Beterbiev fights, has continued to announce upcoming fights for September, October and November. None have involved Bivol thus far, despite earlier conversations suggesting a rubber match could potentially kick off the 2025 Riyadh Season, which begins in October and runs through next March.

The IBF already granted an exception in a non-title unification scenario when the sanctioning body permitted Beterbiev to face Bivol earlier this year. It is doubtful that Bivol will be afforded such a luxury, since a title unification bout is the one condition that trumps a mandatory title defense.

Should Bivol opt to vacate, Eifert would then face the next highest-rated available contender. Conor Wallace, 16-1 (11 KOs) is currently number two in the IBF 175lbs rankings. The 29-year-old southpaw from Queensland by way of Northern Ireland is coming off an eight-round, unanimous decision win over Dylan Colin on June 8 in Broadbeach, Australia.

Eifert is 13-1, has fought twice in the past three years, has no power and his only name win was a decision a couple of years ago against a then-40-year-old Jean Pascal. He is ranked 48th by boxrec, below fellow German Felix Strum, who is 46-years-old and hasn’t had a meaningful fight since the Obama administration.. Makes perfect sense that Eifert is a mandatory for one of the best p4p fighters in the world

There goes his second belt.
I would respect the IBF way more if their mandatories weren’t so f*cking random.

Yep. If these mandatories that disrupt top voluntary defences were all top 5/10 I'm sure there would be less complaints but they always seem to be nobodies.

Why not, just take the mandatory fight. The Beterbiev fight is delayed anyways, so it's good to stay busy.
Not too much risk involved, can take it on a free saturdaynight.

Dmitry Bivol files for medical exception with IBF after back surgery

Dmitry Bivol will spend the rest of the year on the mend.

He just hopes his current unified light heavyweight championship reign remains intact once he’s ready to return to the ring.

The lineal, WBA, IBF and WBO 175lbs champion revealed on Friday that he is currently recovering from surgery for a lingering back injury. The development came more than a week after the deadline expired to reach an agreement with Michael Eifert for an IBF-ordered mandatory title defense.

“Following my doctor’s advice, I had to undergo surgery for a past back injury which I’ve been dealing with for over ten years,” Bivol announced through his verified social media channels. “But it kept getting worse with each training camp. Everything went well, and I’m feeling much better already.

“A 6-8 week recovery period lies ahead, after which I plan to start training again.”

BS has learned that Bivol, 24-1 (12 KOs), has filed for a medical exception given his current condition. The matter still needs to be reviewed and approved by the IBF for the two-time and reigning light heavyweight king to not have to honor his overdue title challenge against Germany’s Eifert, 13-1 (5 KOs).

Bivol was ordered to face Eifert, the longtime IBF No. 1 contender, on July 1. Little progress was made during their negotiation period, though Bivol – who is co-promoted by Matchroom Boxing and World of Boxing – asked for a one-week extension before the sanctioning body would have to move toward ordering a purse bid hearing, per its rules covering mandatory title fights.

Eifert has been the IBF’s No. 1 light heavyweight contender since his March 2023 win over former lineal champion Jean Pascal. The sanctioned title eliminator saw Eifert hit the road and upset Pascal via unanimous decision in the latter’s hometown of Laval, Canada.

It has been a very slow process to get Eifert into the title picture. The sanctioning body joined the WBC, WBA and WBO in first allowing then-unified and unbeaten champ Artur Beterbiev to meet Bivol in an undisputed championship clash. Beterbiev, 21-1 (20 KOs), won their first meeting via majority decision last October 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The IBF ordered Beterbiev, a two-time Russian Olympian who now lives and trains in Montreal, to face Eifert. However, an exception was granted for Beterbiev to instead face Bivol in an immediate rematch, with the condition that Eifert was guaranteed to next face the winner.

Bivol won their February 22 sequel, also via majority decision and in Riyadh. He subsequently vacated his WBC belt in lieu of an ordered title consolidation clash with David Benavidez. The idea at the time was to enter a rubber match with Beterbiev, though the matter lingered for months without any real resolution.

There was a point when the targeted third fight was destined for Russia. Financial backers for the proposed event were prepared to pay more than they would have made even on Turki Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season circuit.

However, Beterbiev placed the blame solely on Bivol for the trilogy clash never seeing the light of day. He has instead moved on to a stay-busy fight with Alabama’s Deon Nicholson on Alalshikh’s loaded November 22 show in Riyadh.

It was never guaranteed that Bivol would have been granted permission by the IBF to again face Beterbiev. He was out of exceptions absent a medical issue, though his current reported state should at least allow him to hold the IBF title until he’s given a clean bill of health.

The IBF will now have to rule on Bivol’s requested medical exception, as well as on what to do with its title status in the meantime. Rule changes from its most recent convention have allowed for more liberal use of approving interim title fights. That said, injured titleholders have long served as the primary condition for such granted status.

Bivol insists he will come back stronger than ever in 2026, though without offering a hint of whom he would next face.

“Thank you all for your support,” Bivol told his fans, “I look forward to new challenges in the next year.”

Dmitry Bivol Out For Remainder Of 2025 Following Back Surgery

Dmitry Bivol has decided to put his health first.

The light heavyweight champion will miss the remainder of 2025 after undergoing successful back surgery, he told The Ring. He is expected to recover in six to eight weeks.

“Following my doctor’s advice, I had to undergo surgery for an older back injury which I’ve been dealing with for over 10 years,” Bivol said. “It kept getting worse with each training camp.”

Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs) is coming off the most significant victory of his career, a majority decision over fellow Russian Artur Beterbiev (21-1, 20 KOs) that gave him The Ring and all four sanctioning body titles.

Beterbiev had outpointed Bivol the previous October, meaning their rivalry now stands at one victory apiece.

Initially, Bivol and Beterbiev expressed interest in scheduling a trilogy in their native Russia and it was believed that Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring and head of Riyadh Season, gave them his blessing to do so after overseeing the previous two undisputed bouts. However, the fighters opted to go different directions.

According to Beterbiev, Bivol pulled out and that left him furious. Unwilling to wait any longer, Beterbiev decided to move on and he will instead face Deon Nicholson on Nov. 22, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“Our next fight was supposed to take place in Russia,” Beterbiev wrote on his Instagram account. “You know what we’re talking about now. The third fight with Dmitry Bivol. We were offered great conditions, which were almost impossible to refuse.

"For my part, I did everything to make the third fight happen, but my opponent chose the path of retreat again. I've waited long enough and I don't intend to wait any longer. Sitting around doing nothing while someone else is resting is too much.”

Perhaps Beterbiev now understands Bivol's reasoning. The champion did his best to push past the constant back pain but he could no longer do so. After surgery, he's looking forward to being healthy.

“Everything went well and I’m feeling much better already,” Bivol said. “Six-to-eight-week recovery period lies ahead, after which I plan to start training again. Thank you all for your support. I look forward to new challenges in the new year.”

Vadim Kornilov, Bivol’s manager, gives his client his full support.

“Dmitry had four big fights in a row recently," Kornilov said. "He is very responsible and treated every opportunity with respect. But now we had to first deal with an elbow problem which was taunting him.

"When he started getting back in the gym, his back pain started getting worse and worse. The doctors told him it would only deteriorate.

"When we contemplated, Dmitry told me that he would rather deal with it now, instead of possibly having to cancel a fight during camp later. I support him 100 percent in this.”

“Thank you all for your support,” Bivol told his fans, “I look forward to new challenges in the next year.”

And there lies the problem with having so many parasitic self serving 'sanctioning bodies'.

Apart from pure greed and self interest, what right did the IBF have to offer the unknown and relatively idle Eifert these terms?

Of course it would be understandable if Bivol accepts this as a comeback fight after his back operation.

Those 2 words 'back operation' set off many alarm bells, but as was stated earlier, it's a real shame that the fans don't get to see the fights that they most want to see.

As the likes of Bivol, Beterbiev, Canelo, Joshua, Fury etc all near the end of their careers such b list fights as Bivol v Eifert, or even novelty fights Canelo v Crawford, Joshua v Paul etc should not ideally be consuming more than a month or two at this late point.

I don't suppose David Benavidez is too pleased with the things are going either, but he understands, it was, and always will be about the money first.

I guess it's all a question of waiting and keeping faith with the saviour of boxing, His Excellency, Turki Alalshikh.

Someone else with a good grasp of how boxing economics works.

They could've called Smith, Ramirez or even an unbeaten top 20 contender and people wouldn't really be complaining. Some of the names they choose are bizarre and surely just makes them less credible. It's not like they're big names that will get them a big cut of any purses.

By the time this takes place Eifert will have fought once in three years (against a 12-4 fighter who had never beaten an opponent with a winning record) and his big win was in early 2023 against an ancient Jean Pascal. Even by alphabet organization standards this is a ludicrous mandatory

Manager: Dmitry Bivol targets spring return before major fight later in 2026

Dmitry Bivol is expected to return for a Ring Magazine light heavyweight championship defense in March or April, his manager Vadim Kornilov tells The Ring.

One option is mandatory challenger Michael Eifert in Bivol’s first fight since he underwent back surgery in August. Bivol would then target a major fight in the second half of 2026 with a third fight with Artur Beterbiev.

The 34-year-old won the undisputed light heavyweight championship in February when he defeated Beterbiev in a rematch, avenging a controversial decision loss from October 2024.

Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs) was in talks to fight Beterbiev in a trilogy bout in late 2025 in Russia but elected for surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. The serious injury has forced Bivol into a compressive rehabilitation program to rebuild strength in his lumbar and ensure the injury doesn’t flare up again.

Eifert (13-1, 5 KOs) would both fit the profile of the sort of opponent Bivol’s team is seeking following a major injury and would fulfill the mandatory defense the IBF ordered over the summer.

The 28-year-old German outpointed former champion Jean Pascal in 2023 in his lone notable victory.

Already, Bivol vacated his WBC title, which is now held by David Benavidez. Benavidez challenges unified cruiserweight titleholder Zurdo Ramirez in May, but if he returns to 175 pounds, a fight with Bivol is possible for later in 2026.

Manager: Expect Dmitry Bivol back soon versus mandatory Michael Eifert

Unified light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol is aiming for a return fight in March or April, casting his attention on his IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert.

Bivol manager Vadim Kornilov told Boxing Scene Tuesday that his 35-year-old fighter, recovering from August back surgery, is expected to launch training soon in Kyrgyzstan.

Bivol 24-1 (12KOs) last fought in February 2025, defeating Russia’s then-undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev 21-1 (20KOs) in a compelling rematch. Bivol avenged his lone career defeat, four months after Beterbiev’s riveting majority decision victory in 2024.

While Bivol left Riyadh as the undisputed light heavyweight champion, he did not keep the WBC belt for long. The two-time champ vacated the WBC title, which was awarded to David Benavidez. Bivol still holds the WBA, IBF and WBO titles.

Germany’s Eifert 13-1 (5KOs) has been out of the ring even longer than Bivol. He has not fought since August 24, 2024, as he waited for his overdue mandatory title shot. The inactivity protected his No. 1 ranking, though he now faces a daunting task against one of the best fighters in the world.

Eifert’s most prominent victory was over an aged Jean Pascal in 2023, to become the IBF No. 1 contender.

Bivol was widely recognized by most outlets - including Boxing Scene - as the 2022 Fighter of the Year. He defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez - who briefly moved up after becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion - and Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, who is now a unified cruiserweight champion.
