Worst excuses in every combat sports
What are you the worst excuses you heard outside from every combat sports you heard of?
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Oliver McCall's that he was trying to lull Lennox Lewis into a false sense of security when he was walking around the ring crying in the rematch was pretty ridiculous. That whole thing was absurd.
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Honestly Vitali's excuse for quitting in the Byrd fight because it was "just too much pain" was definitely a piss poor excuse for a Hall of Fame fighter.
More so when you consider that they were deep enough into the fight that all he had to do was just stand up, and move around for 3 rounds, and he would've won. He didn't have to use his injured shoulder at all to make it through the rest of that fight.
That loss is every bit as humiliating for Vitali as Duran's "No Mas" loss to Leonard is for him.

Wilder and his ring costume. Not the worst but pretty poor.

1. McCall claiming his mental breakdown was a rope a dope
2. "Oh no, My Toe" David Haye
I don't know. For the most part a fighter's excuses for losing don't tend to stand out in my mind. I know many of them have an excuse or blame their trainer or the officials or someone other than themselves. It's human nature.

juan manual lopez saying he was stopped by salido in their rematch because the ref was gambling on it was pretty up there
a few fighters/trainers have alleged being poisoned by the opponent's team - wlad (or someone from his team) and wilder both did
someone from pac's team blamed the mayweather loss (or was it another loss) on pac having the wrong pair of socks
and wilder of course put about every awful excuse together, he has to be the GOAT excuse maker when it comes to a single fight

I don't remember that excuse for the Mayweather loss but he sure used it in the Juan Manuel Marquez loss.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025, 19:17 juan manual lopez saying he was stopped by salido in their rematch because the ref was gambling on it was pretty up there

I wonder what your guys take on excuses
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Hearns loss to Hagler was blamed on a leg massage
Tyson Fury blamed his first loss to Usyk on the judges favouring Usyk because of the war.

Anyone else?
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Eubank Sr suggesting Collins was helped with some celtic druid rites which enhanced his warrior spirit, like a berserk type of thing.
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Lewis said he thought McCall was intimidated by his shorts!
Perhaps one of the worst excuses for winning!!
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
Nelo saying he got busted in 2018 because of market meat, which was apparently tainted with clenbuterol.
Re: Worst excuses in every combat sports
It wasn't Eubank that suggested it. Collins' team put it about that he'd been hypnotised to not feel pain and Eubank seemed to buy the mind game.
Although, to be fair to Eubank, he had the Michael Watson tragedy hanging over him so maybe it's understandable he was a bit paranoid about something like that.
