Arturi Gatti vs Joey Gamache

Post by Jeffsboxing »

It's funny to put Arturo Gatti in this topic, but it's about Joey Gamache. How do you comment on that fight?

I don't remember the weight difference in this one, but someone here will. I do remember that Gatti added a LOT of pounds after the weigh in, and damn near killed Gamache. Even without the added weight Gamache had no business even being in that fight. He had actually retired and it was something of a comeback. He was a cutie with some speed but didn't belong in the ring with tough fighters such as Chavez.

I think Gamache actually won a settlement of some kind against the boxing commission over this one....but surely somebody else here will be able to give you all the details.

I can only add that from my memory of seeing the fight I knew Gamache was in danger when both fighters entered the ring.

That type of incident is bad for boxing. It should not have happened
especially in a major market like New York.
As you pointed out Jacklem the weight difference was obvious.

What I read was that the contract weight was 142. Gamache stepped on the scale and made weight no problem. Gatti stepped up and the scale went "clang!" He was overweight, but the NY comish let him off the scale. Gamache demanded he get back on the scale, but Gatti already started pounding down the gatorade once the comish set he was all set. He was no made to weigh in another time.

HBO did an unofficial weigh-in pre ring walk. Gatti weighed 160!!! I don't know what Gamache was...I want to say 145, but I don't know for certain.

As we all know, Gatti won and Joey sued the athletic commision and others...I think they settled out of court.
