Definitely, very likeable guy too. The Tris Dixon interview with him on boxing life stories is worth a listen, very honest and open, quite sad though.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑12 Mar 2025, 17:52 robin reid is one of the sexiest boxers ever. plus world champ and olympic medalist. shoulda been a multi millions star

Maybe it was that then, seems small compared to what a fight like that could generate todayCoco wrote: ↑12 Mar 2025, 20:5540k purse was the norm for a 90's WBO challenger on SkyNightmare Roy wrote: ↑12 Mar 2025, 17:45I heard Reid got about £30k for that fight, unbelievable, imagine a fight like that in Saudi these days.

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
Way too much workrate for Ward on the inside, Ward had trouble with the pace and up close toughness of Sakio Bika, Joe swept the first six and won the last six comfortably. Ward is an excellent spoiler on the inside, but Calzaghe is a master of landing many many shots on the inside that no boxer has been able to keep up with.
Ward knows how to slow the workrate of lesser fighters, would be interesting seeing trying to go it against Calzaghe at his thresher best

Watched that last night. Really enjoyed it. Dre is the perfect person to interview boxers.
Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
It's an excellent interview.
Andre Ward clearly has a lot of respect for Calzaghe.

I wasn't Joe's biggest fan by any means, but he had that one crucial component that makes a great champion....a burning desire to win

“Joe Calzaghe would destroy Carl Froch, I think a lot of fighters would destroy Carl Froch, you know. I think Carl Froch was managed well. He was picked for the right fights at the right time.”
Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
I think Calzaghe beats him relatively wide on the cards, something like 117-111 or 118-110 but he knows he’s in a fight & has to work hard to win every round.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Jun 2025, 07:07

If we look at the Ward fight, Froch never accepted a points defeat & for me won the last two rounds in that one. I don’t buy this idea that Calzaghe does a job on him similar to what he did to Lacy which seems to be the idea a lot of fans have.
Are Khan’s comments recent? They seem to be mates now & the comments don’t really make sense.
He fought a very good, undefeated Jean Pascal for his belt, a young, unbeaten Dirrell with a nightmare style for him, he went on the road to face Kessler & Abraham in fights he was the bookies underdog in.
The general consensus seemed to be that Bute was coming over to finish what remained of Froch & many fans convinced themselves Froch was ducking Groves & didn’t want the rematch.
Obviously he didn’t get Ward at a good time.
You could argue he got Kessler at a good time in the rematch & you could argue he got Taylor at a good time albeit Carl himself was injured going into that fight but had to take it as he didn’t have a UK TV deal & it was his mandatory.
So basically Khan’s talking nonsense.

Did anyone get Ward at a good time?
Yh Khan and Froch had that recent interaction, but seemed like they were putting it on.
Froch probably still hates Khan and he probably knows it

Haha. It was a bit awkward when Froch was saying ‘I don’t know what it’s like to be ironed out Amir but you do, what’s it like?’Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Jun 2025, 08:05 Did anyone get Ward at a good time?

I doubt anyone would destroy Froch. Like him or loathe him Carl was insanely tough.

Carl Froch Questions Joe Calzaghe’s Undefeated Record: “He Got Smashed By Two Fighters”
Carl Froch‘s feud with long-time rival Joe Calzaghe continues.
These two fighters are two of the best super middleweights to ever come from the UK.
Calzaghe was undefeated in 46 fights and held his world title for more than a decade whilst making a record 20 defences. He also moved up to light heavyweight in his last two bouts, defeating Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Froch stayed at super-middleweight for all of his career and won several world title fights, including a historic knockout of George Groves in his final contest at Wembley Stadium in 2014.
Although the two never fought, the theoretical outcome has been discussed many times.
Speaking on Sporting Talk, Froch responded to claims that he would have been ‘smashed’ by Calzaghe, and although he then gave him plenty of credit, he also named two men who he thinks beat the Welshman.
“The only guy who’s beaten me [Andre Ward] and that was on points, two of the rounds were 115-114, he beat me by one round, a guy who was Olympic Gold medalist, never lost a fight since he was 12, retried undefeated. First bout Hall of Fame I’m sure.
“So to say that Calzaghe would have smashed me after he got smashed by Robin Reid, got flattened by Kabary Salem, beat a guy called Tucker Pudwill – this guy couldn’t even fight and he fought him. But I’m not giving Calzaghe stick, he’s had a great career, unbeaten in his pro career, he’s had a couple tight fights but most people like Floyd Mayweather had a couple of tight fights but got the nod. But he wouldn’t have smashed me would he. ‘The Cobra’ don’t get smashed.
“Calzaghe might give me a tough fight and a hard night’s work but he might have ended up getting smashed himself and walking onto one. Cause a 42 year old Roy Jones Jr nearly did it to him. I thought Bernard Hopkins smashed him and didn’t get the decision and like I said earlier Robin Reid punched his skull in for 12 rounds and Calzaghe showed how tough he was and won a decision and never rematched him, but lets not rip the a**e out of Joe Calzaghe cause I’ve nothing against him, he’s a top fighter.”
Robin Reid himself feels he beat Calzaghe that night back in 1999 when he challenged for the Welshman’s WBO world title, as does Hopkins, who knocked Calzaghe down in the first round of their 2008 bout before losing a split decision after the final bell.
Despite what an intriguing match-up it would have been, the fight between Froch and Calzaghe is forever resigned to debate and speculation.

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
I preferred Froch's approach to his career. I prefer Calzaghe's approach to retirement.

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
Weird Bute never comes up when discussing Froch. Arguably his biggest win, certainly at the time, Bute was considered a beast and was a strong favourite.
I guess Bute’s post froch career legacy lessens the victory. It’s a bit like Lacy, you don’t really know if they were overrated to start with or just got ruined by Carl and Joe, respectively.

I think whilst Bute was a favourite - there were some warning signs that he wasn't great in the whiskers - vs Andrade and vs Golovkin in the amateurs (Golvokin seemingly much smaller than Bute when they fought). Style wise and with a massive touch of hindsight, Bute was perfect for Froch whose strength was his strength.Bigdogsnose wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025, 08:03 Weird Bute never comes up when discussing Froch. Whereas Lacy there was no such concerns before the fight - although he fought a lower standard of opposition than Bute did, Andrade himself was considered a bit of a threat to the champions also, but Bute outclassed him for much of the fight. .
Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
Froch is hard as nails when it actually kicks off but seems fragile as glass the rest of the time. Really strange chap.

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
bute was only a small favourite, at least in betting. by fight time it wasnt getting much higher than -155 bute in american odds, which is like 2/3. and it was very close to evens at points. i placed a small bet on froch and won a bit for the night
money wasnt convinced in bute evidentally, neither was i. too soft. tbf though he later fought some good opponents like pascal and jack and degale, and despite losing clearly did much better against them than he did vs froch. he wasnt as good as hyped, but was better than froch made him look.
froch had a great career, but ya strange guy. very insecure and rather immature about certain things despite all he achieved. its gone way way past just being some tongue in cheek wind up now, almost surely if someone still says that they are a big froch fan not wanting to admit how insecure he is. its like a compulsive need he has to reassure himself of his worth. i bet you many of us are more comfortable with ourselves than he is.
a guy from froch's team was very active on forums back in the day too, and was also really weird. would publicly post bdsm and fetish porn.

Chances are bute was popping hot that night as well, so glad froch exposed him. He was huge for the weight as well.stujones wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025, 08:50I think whilst Bute was a favourite - there were some warning signs that he wasn't great in the whiskers - vs Andrade and vs Golovkin in the amateurs (Golvokin seemingly much smaller than Bute when they fought). I actually put this question to the breadman in his mailbag and he gave me a great answer.
