Spot on Ruth, he’s cringeworthy

Why do they interview a non achieving nobody next to a top class world champion and let him carry on uninterrupted with the pretence that he could beat Shak. No disrespect to Josh but a rematch with Josh Padley would be a harder night’s work for Shakur than Benn would be

Conor Benn thinks Chris Eubank Jnr trying to get out of rematch

Just because a fight has been announced doesn’t mean that it’s actually going to happen.

That lesson has been learned many times before, and that lesson may be repeated with the rematch between Chris Eubank Jnr and Conor Benn.

Eubank-Benn II was announced on June 29 with a date of September 20, reprising their Fight of the Year candidate from April 26 that Eubank won via unanimous decision.

Boxing Scene has been informed by sources that Eubank had not signed as of the day the fight announcement was made.

More than two weeks after the rematch was announced, Benn says there is reason to believe that Eubank is seeking either to pull out or to change the terms of their agreement.

“We had signed for the rematch clause. It was a two-fight deal, period. Same terms,” Benn said in an interview on Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show.

Benn fought at welterweight until 2022 and then had two bouts within the junior middleweight limit in the United States in 2023 and 2024. That was during the period when Benn was facing a suspension in the U.K. over a positive test for a banned performance-enhancing drug, a punishment Benn was successfully able to overturn on appeal.

The fight with Eubank took place at middleweight. Both men were required to tip the scales no higher than 160lbs, and with a rehydration clause limiting both men to gain no more than 10lbs as of the morning of the fight.

“I’ve heard Eubank doesn’t want the fight. He’s moaning about the weight stipulation,” Benn said.

Benn noted that Eubank’s past five fights have been at middleweight. Eubank’s entire pro career has been within either the middleweight or super middleweight limits.

However, fighters can and do grow out of their weight classes. And it’s also possible that the rehydration clause limited Eubank in a way that he had not been required to experience before.

Much was made of Eubank struggling to make 160lbs for the Benn bout, though Benn derided that as “a good narrative to push.”

At the same time, Benn argues that he was the one at an actual disadvantage because of the weight, even if he didn’t have to struggle before stepping on the scale at 156.5lbs.

“The reality is I’m not 160. I’m not 154,” Benn said. “You gotta remember, when I fought [Rodolfo] Orozco in the USA [in 2023], look at the size of him. I’m not 154. I’m a 147 fighter.”

And yet if there is a disagreement or discontent from Eubank’s team over the contractual terms for the rematch, Benn also admitted: “I don’t know what he is pushing for.

“Whatever it is, I’m not doing it.”

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, speaking to Helwani via phone during Benn’s interview, said Eubank’s side is the holdup.

“We’re waiting,” Hearn said. “These people are so painful. [...] Conor Benn, he’s one of the biggest stars in boxing right now. Everybody wants to fight him. We need an answer, and hopefully that will come in the next 24 hours, so we’re standing by.”

Benn, now 23-1 (14 KOs), not only suffered his first pro defeat but was beaten by a person whom he didn’t like before and still doesn’t like despite the 12 rounds of shared blood and sweat.

“I want to get redemption,” Benn said. “I think he’s scared of that. That was the best Eubank in there. But there’s a lot of mistakes I made. There’s experience gained, lessons learned. There’s wrongs that I can right. There was greed. There was loading up. There was a lot of aggression, a lot of anger.

“I wanted to hurt him. I didn’t stick to the game plan. I didn’t at all. I just wanted to go in there and take his head off. If it does happen next, I'll fight with less heart, less balls, more brains.”

It was a lucrative fight for both men, and the rematch would further pad their bank accounts. Benn appreciates the paydays but also has a second mission in mind: winning a world title.

“For me, I’ve done the big fight; now I just want to tick off some personal goals. But if it makes sense, it makes sense to fight [lightweight titleholder Shakur] Stevenson. If it makes sense, it makes sense to fight Ryan [Garcia], [Devin] Haney. But the personal goal for me is always to win that WBC belt. It’s always, like, a dream of mine, and I feel like I should’ve been WBC world champion years ago. It’s something I want to tick off. But if the big fight arrives, then we can make that instead.”

That would ideally be at welterweight, he said. The WBC world title is being contested this weekend, with Mario Barrios defending against returning retiree Manny Pacquiao.

“If I’m dropping back down to 147, it has to be, I really want it to be the world title,” Benn said. “As soon as I've got that, bucket list done. Not many fighters can say they’ve achieved the world title and the money.”

Benn on where things stand with a Eubank Jr rematch
“So we had signed for the rematch clause, it was a two-fight deal, period. You’ve got to remember, Eubank’s last five fights have been at 160. He’s had 15, 17 fights at 160, the majority of his career was at 160. But obviously he had pre-planned all this with the weight cut and it was a good narrative to push [that he struggled to make 160] and a lot of people believed it.

“But the reality is I’ve come up two weights to his weight division. If he doesn’t want to do the fight, and he is bottling it, which he is — he’s scared...What I’m gathering is he doesn’t want the fight and he wants to get out of it or move the weight. But the reality is I’m not 160, I’m not 154...I’m a 147 fighter and he wanted to push that narrative. You didn’t hear him moaning about the weight when he had to fight Liam Smith, and even when he lost he didn’t use the weight as an excuse.

“But he pushed that narrative well and said he was in the hospital for a few days. I was in the hospital, too. There’s a big difference between me and him.”

On why Eubank Jr would want out of their rematch when he won and it was such a commercial success
“Personally, the only thing I can think of is he’s scared...I don’t think he wants to do that weight. If he wants to move up to fight Janibek, please go ahead. I’d love to see that, too.

“All I do know is Eubank is moaning about the date and he’s moaning about the weight. So, listen, I want to fight Eubank. I want to get redemption, I think he’s scared of that. That was the best Eubank in there but there’s a lot of mistakes I made, there’s experienced gained, lessons learned in there for me, but there’s wrongs that I can right.”

Yeah, Shakur would win this. His style would be more suited to moving up the weights than some.

What a pratt Benn is , , He claims he's still a 147 fighter , so how about he comes down to 141 , with a rehydration limit and Shakur comes up to 141, good for the goose sort of thing

Definitely the smart move for Eubank to take this rematch. If he loses. It's a Trilogy, and he gets another big fight. If he wins, he probably gets a crack at Canelo soon.

So either which way Eubank has gotten himself 2 more big paydays at minimum.

Even with PPV. The hype which followed the first fight is gone. Yh they’ll still get casual eyes and there will still be a build and all that. But it’s not the same.

I listened to BKM’s interview with Napper from yesterday. It sounded like Eubank was trying to renegotiate the deal. Napper said they were trying to sort things out with Sela and now obviously this has come out. He also confirmed the renegotiation wasn’t due to weight.

They both seemingly signed a 2 fight with the terms listed. It’s a poor look to then try and renegotiate that afterwards so I’d imagine Turki has told them to do one.

Without Turki’s help there may not even be enough money in the pot on domestic PPV/ticket sales to pay for the purses in the first fight.

I dont mind Hearn but he's lost the plot with Benn, calling him elite and world class. He must have forgot his boy lost against a 35 year old weight drained and dehydrated fighter who Hearn continually talked down as not being world class.

Benn says ‘Yes’ to Eubank Jnr November date; also held talks with Barrios

Conor Benn has options heading into his next fight.

There was a time where he was seemingly locked in for a rematch with countryman and fellow second-generation boxer Chris Eubank Jnr. The two engaged in a twelve-round thriller on April 26, won by Eubank Jnr, 35-3 (25 KOs) via unanimous decision before an announced crowd of 67,484 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.

A June 29 announcement from The Ring – who presented the April 26 show – insisted the two would run it back on September 20 at a London location to be determined.

Benn, 23-1 (14 KOs) was obviously on board, regardless of date and location. Eubank Jnr, however, stayed quiet, despite the reported news.

It quickly became apparent that he was not happy with proposed date. The rematch was quickly scrapped but days later it was announced that Riyadh Season and Sela were interested in making the rematch in November.

“I mean we got asked by [Turki Alalshikh] would we be happy to do the event in November,” said Eddie Hearn, Benn’s promoter and chairman of Matchroom Boxing. “The answer for us is yes, we would have much preferred September but obviously Eubank for some reason needs more time.

“I don't think it's been agreed yet or approved yet, but if it came in November we're talking to a few venues, we would make it happen.”

Before Benn signed to first face Eubank back in April, he was reportedly in discussions to face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. Talks broke off once it was clear that Barrios, 29-2-2 (18 KOs) would next former eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao, 62-8-3 (39 KOs).

Barrios and Pacquiao recently fought to a disputed majority draw on July 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While a rematch is warranted based on the outcome, there are no such immediate plans as this goes to publication.

Given Barrios’ current availability, Hearn opted to reopen talks as an option for Benn to fight for his first major title.

“We have had a couple of conversations with the PBC about [Mario] Barrios for Conor Benn,” Hearn said. “I love that fight, I think he becomes world champion, but we'll have to see over the next couple of weeks [what happens].”

And even from that list, Benn is somehow the least likeable. I couldn't think of anything worse than being stuck somewhere with that lot (most of them anyway).
