Costello wasn't necessarily my favourite commentator but i appreciated his low key delivery and focus on the actual fight in front of him as opposed to Smith's impression of a man with his trousers on fire regardless of the situation.
What Smith does that Costello couldn't / wouldn't is promote DAZN's schedule mid commentary, that's why he's there. People with a much better knowledge than me of how to boost viewing figures have come to the conclusion that a man shouting at the top of his voice about how everything on DAZN (past, present and future) is absolutely brilliant will keep viewers coming back for more so Smith does as he's told and those of us who prefer a more natural, less excitable style of commentary can only use the mute button and think longingly of the joys of listening to Harry Carpenter or Reg Gutteridge or Ian Darke

The man is an absolute pillock of the highest order and shouldn't be anywhere near a commentary booth. I feel like I'm genuinely in danger of going into psychosis if I listen to him. It was purely in the interest of my mental health that I muted the broadcast.

He can read out a few facts about boxing, but that doesn't equate to knowledge, and he has zero insight or understanding of the game.
You would think that after 25 years he would have picked up something.
The blonde dolly bird asked some decent questions to Frampton, showed insight, passed them the ball and let them run with it.
He said about if Lapin lost, that it would have a really negative effect on Uysks head. How can he come out with nonsense like that.
He really seems like he is on the sniff

Re: Adam Smith
but seriously, for me a fight that sums up adam smith's commentary was when kieran molloy fight some tough mexican dude
it was a hard ass fight, molloy with the silky skills of 100+ amateur fight irish national champ, but the mexican was going at him and giving him hell. had molloy ragged and down from a body shot. molloy got up and found himself to deservedly come through a 1 point winner on the cards. everyone was rightfully talking about what a hell of a good and close fight it was
except smith, who instead of enjoying the battle and praising both guys kept one sidedly droning on about how awesome molloy was, refusing to suggest that he had the slightest bit of trouble aside from the kd. and then moaning about how the card was way too close and all that cheerleader ish.
he goes into a fight with a narrative and keeps trying to sell you it even when it doesnt unfold as he wants, i mute him
that said, he is still better than the biggest british cheerleading commentator i ever heard, nick halling. a-side fighter would feint and he'd explode with 'OH THATS' GOOD WORK (insert name here)"

Smith doesn't strike me as a nice guy at all. More a narcissistic, sharp elbowed company man, arse licking whoever he needs to to get the gig. He's suitably deferential around boxing folk which maybe gives the illusion of being a decent bloke but even that comes across as cringeworthy - like his "there's the respect" schtick

I loved Ian Darke on the mic and he does football equally well. Harry was great and Reggie (that's what SRL called him) was the best ever. But, it doesn't matter what I think, Adam's here to stay.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 19:43Nail on the head there Keithkeithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 19:08 Adam's a great guy and very knowledgeable on the sport, but I don't care for his commentary. Oh how i long for someone like Darke.
Barry Jones is great but is drowned out by the endlessly gargling Smith, it's like listening to Douglas Hurd on crack.
At one point, there was an arial shot of the stadium, and smith gargled 'wooooooooooowwwww' apropos of nothing.
Mind you, the okolie fight was so dire he could probably have gotten excited over a sip of water

Re: Adam Smith
Absolutely right. He’s ruthless no doubt. Binned by Sky, he’s managed to make himself british boxings only commentator on tv. He’d push his nan down the stairs if he had to. He’s a weirdo, an arse licker, he’s glued to his pre fight narrative no matter what happens and he has no attention to the details of the sport. I hate his commentary and kinda resent in a non aggressive way the people who cried on boxing forums when he was fired by Sky. They played a part, no matter how small, in bringing him back. As someone said previously he ruins every fight night. My wife said last night, and she knows nothing about boxing, ‘ how can you listen to him all night ? ‘ I said I’ve got no choice if I want to see the fights. My only hope is that one day his verbal diarrhoea will lead to him saying something that will get him cancelled. Harsh and bad karma but the spanner is everywhere, boxing related and I’m sick of the freak.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 21:57If nice guys with a love for the sport were the pre requisites we'd have guys like Ed Robinson or Tris Dixon on our screensCoco wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 20:54The justification for Smith is that he is a nice guy and loves the sport.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 19:43

Someone make some bingo cards for the next time he is on.
I got the quotes:
“there’s the respect”
“This is what boxing’s all about!”
“We’ve got a fight on our hands!”
“He’s digging deep now”
“Toe-to-toe!”
“It’s all on the line tonight”
“A chess match early on”
“The atmosphere is electric!”
“Styles make fights”
“This could go either way”
“He’s hurt him there!”
“All the talk is over”
“It’s heating up now”
**FREE SPACE**
“They’re trading leather!”
“What a response!”
“Can he recover?”
“He’s on unsteady legs”
“This is turning into a war”
“The drama continues!”
“He’s biting down on the gumshield”
“Pure theatre!”
“He’s got to let his hands go”
“A test of heart and will”
“He’s come to fight tonight”
“Edge-of-your-seat stuff!”
“Barrera and Morales!”
“He just had a little look over at the corner there"
Or take a shot when he says any of them
