Jan Paul Rivera headlines Most Valuable Prospects 14 on August 22

Undefeated Puerto Rican featherweight prospect Jan Paul Rivera will headline the next edition of Most Valuable Prospects, MVP Promotions announced today.

Rivera, 12-0 (6 KOs), will take on Miami's Daniel Bailey, 15-2 (8 KOs), in the main event of Most Valuable Prospects 14 on August 22 from the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

The event will kick off MVP’s first back-to-back events, with the premier edition of MVP Fight Night taking place the following evening. That second card will feature Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera, 7-0 (3 KOs), taking on Angelino “Huracan” Cordova, 19-0-1 (12 KOs), for the WBA interim flyweight world title.

The co-main event at Most Valuable Prospects 14 will see Corey “2Smoove” Marksman, 11-0-1 (8 KOs), in a 10-round lightweight bout against Luis “Bebo” Martinez, 9-1 (4 KOs). The card will also feature Las Vegas-based Cuban middleweight Yoelvis Gomez, 8-1 (7 KOs), taking on Haiti’s Edwine Humaine, 9-1 (7 KOs), over 10 rounds.

Preliminary bouts on the prospects card include undefeated junior welterweight Tayre Jones, 13-0 (7 KOs), from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, against 24-year-old Puerto Rican talent Alex Rios, 9-2 (3 KOs) over eight rounds.

The card will also feature the MVP debut of Nigeria’s Elizabeth Oshoba, 9-0 (5 KOs), the IBF’s top-ranked featherweight, who takes on Melissa Oddessa Parker, 6-3-1 (2 KOs), in an eight-rounder.

“Most Valuable Prospects 14 will kick off our first ever back-2-back events … and we’re thrilled to showcase another stacked lineup of MVP talent,” said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, co-founders of MVP. “Jan Paul Rivera continues to climb the ranks as one of Puerto Rico’s next big stars, and we’re introducing the world to Nigeria’s Elizabeth Oshoba – who has the knockout power to put the entire 126lb division on notice – as she makes her MVP debut.”

The Most Valuable Prospects series is produced and marketed by MVP, promoted by MVP and Boxlab Promotions, and distributed globally by DAZN.

Yoenis Tellez, Jamaine Ortiz among additions to MVP Fight Night on August 23

Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) has announced that Yoenis Tellez, Jamaine Ortiz, and world titlists Stephanie Han and Jasmine Artiga will be among the boxers featured on MVP Fight Night on August 23 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

MVP had previously confirmed that the card will be headlined by a WBA interim flyweight title fight between Yankiel Rivera, 7-0 (3 KOs), and Angelino Cordova, 19-0-1 (12 KOs). The card will be the second leg of back-to-back fight nights at the venue, with Most Valuable Prospects 14 taking place on August 22.

“Our biggest MVP fight card not featuring Jake Paul or Amanda Serrano is happening Saturday, August 23 in Orlando, live on DAZN,” said Nakisa Bidarian and Jake Paul, co-founders of Most Valuable Promotions. “Yankiel Rivera, Yoenis Tellez, Jamaine Ortiz, Stephanie Han and Jasmine Artiga on one card, all in tough matchups, is going to be non-stop action all night.”

Tellez, 10-0 (7 KOs), most recently defeated Julian Williams on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach in March 2025. The WBA interim junior middleweight beltholder will put his undefeated record on the line against the WBA’s #1 ranked 154 pound contender and European champion Abass Baraou, 16-1 (9 KOs).

Ortiz, 19-2-1 (9 KOs), whose only losses have come against Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Ortiz, meets fellow former title challenger Steve Claggett, 39-8-2 (27 KOs), over 10 rounds in the 140-pound division.

Accompanying the abovementioned matchups are two major title fights.

Stephanie Han, 10-0 (3 KOs) will defend her WBA lightweight title against Paulina Angel, 7-1-2 (3 KOs) in her first fight since signing with MVP in June.

Also on the show, recently crowned WBA junior bantamweight title holder Jasmine Artiga, 13-0-1 (6 KOs), risks her belt for the first time against Linn Sandstrom, 10-3-3 (2 KOs).

Press Release

Massachusetts junior middleweight Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) will return to the ring on August 23rd to face Calgary veteran Steve Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs) in a ten-round bout. It will serve as the co-feature on MVP Fight Night at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. The event will be televised live on DAZN. Tickets on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com. The technically gifted Ortiz is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Yomar Alamo (22-4-1, 13 KOs) on March 15th.

Now, Ortiz, who is co-promoted by Boxlab Promotions and CES Boxing, looks to keep that momentum rolling against Claggett, who possesses knockout power and a reputation for pushing opponents to their limits. "It feels great to be back in the ring after my win over Alamo," said Ortiz. "That fight was a reminder to myself and the boxing world of what I can do when I’m locked in. I’m sharper than ever, and I’m coming into this fight with a lot of confidence and purpose."

Ortiz has his eyes firmly set on a world title opportunity. "I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been," Ortiz added. "I truly believe I have what it takes to become a world champion. Every fight from here on out is a step toward that goal, and I’m willing to face whoever I need to in order to get there."

While Ortiz enters as the favorite, he knows Claggett’s experience and rugged style make him a dangerous opponent. "Claggett is a tough, experienced fighter who comes to win every time out," Ortiz noted. "He’s been in there with some of the best, and I know he’s going to test me. But I’ve prepared for every challenge he can bring, and on fight night, I’m going to show why I’m the one walking away with the victory."

Amaury Piedra, President of Boxlab Promotions, voiced his excitement for Ortiz’s continued rise and praised the collaboration with CES Boxing. "We’re thrilled to be working with CES Boxing on Jamaine’s career," said Piedra. "He’s a world-class talent who is on the brink of breaking into the world title picture once again. This fight with Claggett is another important step for him, and with his skill set and determination, I believe it’s only a matter of time before Jamaine is fighting for — and winning — a world championship."

Press Release

On August 23rd, WBA 154-pound interim Champion, Yoenis “El Bandolero” Tellez (10-0, 7 KOs), originally from Santiago de Cuba and now fighting out of Stafford, Texas, will defend his title against Germany’s Abass Baraou (16-1, 9 KOs) in a twelve-round bout on the MVP Fight Night card at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. The event will be televised live worldwide on DAZN. Tickets on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com. [The WBA still recognizes Terence Crawford as its 154-pound champion even though Crawford will challenge Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for the world 168-pound championship next month.]

Tellez is coming off a career-defining performance against former world champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams. On March 1st, he dominated the seasoned veteran to capture the WBA interim title. Now, he turns his focus to the dangerous and highly skilled Baraou, who represents the toughest challenge yet in his young career. "Beating Julian Williams gave me a lot of confidence, but I’m not satisfied," said Tellez, who is co-promoted by Boxlab Promotions and Warriors Boxing. "I learned a lot from that fight, and I’m bringing that momentum into the ring against Baraou. He’s a talented fighter, and I respect what he’s done in his career. But on fight night, I’m going to show why I’m the champion."

A victory over Baraou could set the stage for Tellez to be elevated to the full WBA title. "This fight is a major step for me," Tellez continued. "When I win, I’ll be in position to fight as the [full WBA] champion. That means big fights, big opportunities, and a chance to keep proving I’m the best at 154 pounds."

For the second time in less than six months, Tellez will be showcased on DAZN, giving fans worldwide a front-row seat to his journey. "Fighting on DAZN again is huge for me," Tellez added. "It’s a global platform, and I want to keep building my name, so everyone knows who Yoenis Tellez is."

Amaury Piedra, President of Boxlab Promotions, articulated his enthusiasm about Tellez’s trajectory and the significance of this fight. "Yoenis has all the tools to be a superstar," Piedra said. "His win over Julian Williams proved he belongs at the top, and a victory against Baraou will put him in line for the WBA [full] title. It’s been incredible working alongside Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian at Most Valuable Promotions—our shared vision for Yoenis’ career is paying off, and the fans are seeing something special unfold."

Tickets are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com.

Chris Avila-Ariel Perez added to August 23 MVP show in Orlando

Chris Avila will return to the region that launched his current win streak.

The iconic combat sports figure is the latest addition to Most Valuable Promotions’ back-to-back fights nights at Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. Avila lands arguably his toughest assignment to date, as he will face Tampa’s Ariel “Golden Hulk” Perez in a six-round light heavyweight contest that will open the August 23 MVP Fight Night show on DAZN.

Avila-Perez comes in support to a pair of secondary title fights – venue favorite and WBA interim 154lbs titlist Yoenis Tellez, 10-0 (7 KOs) against Abass Baraou, 16-1 (9 KOs); and Yankiel Rivera-Angelino Cordova for the WBA interim 112lbs belt atop the card.

“The addition of Chris Avila vs. Ariel ‘Golden Hulk’ Perez further elevates an already stacked MVP Fight Night card,” MVP co-founders Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian said in a joint statement provided to Boxing Scene. “Both fighters have delivered on the MVP stage before, and now face off in what promises to be a statement bout—with Avila representing the notoriety of Team Diaz, and Perez looking to rise to the occasion in front of his home state.

“With Team Diaz in the building, the energy in Orlando will be on another level. Saturday, August 23 marks MVP’s biggest non-Jake and Amanda [Serrano] event to date, featuring four WBA world and interim world title bouts, a WBA eliminator, and much more—all live globally on DAZN as part of our first MVP back-2-back weekend.”

The bout represents the toughest matchup to date for both boxers. It will come with Paul in attendance, as well as record-setting, seven-division champ Amanda Serrano.

Avila, 6-1 (0 KOs) will make his fourth career appearance on an MVP show. It’s a unique relationship, given his lengthy role as a regular sparring partner of celebrated mixed martial artist and boxer Nate Diaz, a former rival and longtime antagonist of Jake Paul. Avila and Diaz both live and train in Stockton, California.

His six-fight win streak began with a December 2021 majority decision victory over Anthony Taylor, avenging a loss he endured when both were in MMA. The bout took place on the undercard of Paul’s memorable sixth-round knockout of Tyron Woodley at AMALIE Arena in Tampa.

It also marked Avila’s return to boxing after a seven-year absence, during which time he fought in MMA. He lost his September 2014 pro boxing debut but has been on a roll since he defeated Taylor in the ring.

Victories over Mikhail “Dr. Mike” Varshavski and Paul Bamba further enhanced Avila’s commitment to the sport. His most notable win to date came in his most recent sanctioned pro fight, a six-round decision over Anthony Pettis. The fight took place on the undercard of Diaz’s win over Jorge Masvidal last July 6 in Anaheim, California.

A stiffer challenge is expected from Perez – not that the 32-year-old light heavyweight prospect is the least bit concerned.

“I’m here to fight on Saturday, August 23,” Avila bluntly stated. “I’m coming to win, get the job done and beat this dude’s ass.”

Perez will also fight on his fourth MVP show.

His debut on the circuit came last April, when he defeated Steven Motley via fourth-round, technical knockout on the Most Valuable Prospects 6 show at this venue. Perez was then granted a true home game as he appeared on the undercard of Paul’s knockout win over ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry last July 20 at AMALIE Arena.

Three wins have since followed, including a six-round shutout of Mario Bedolla Orozco as part of the May 9 Most Valuable Prospects 12 show at Caribe Royale. The run leaves the 33-year-old brimming with confidence, and unimpressed with what his opponent has to bring both to the table and into the ring.

“Avila is a guy who likes to do the talking, but we just show up and go to work,” noted Perez. “We do our talking in the ring.

“He’s tough and it’s going to be a hell of a fight, but we hit different!”

STEVE CLAGGETT OUT OF JAMAINE ORTIZ FIGHT WITH INJURY

Jamaine Ortiz is in need of a new opponent for Aug. 23 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Steve Claggett is out of the bout due to an injury. Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) was originally scheduled to defend his secondary WBA junior welterweight title in a 10-round fight against Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs) on a Most Valuable Promotions card that’ll be headlined by Yankiel Rivera vs Angelino Cordova on DAZN.

Ortiz is expected to stay on the card, as his promoter, BoxLab, is looking for a new opponent for the former title challenger.

“It's a curveball,” Ortiz told The Ring. “I think I'm a fighter that's great at adapting. I can adjust at any given moment. I think people are able to see that throughout my fights, how I adjust in any situation. I have a big amateur career where I face a lot of different opponents, not knowing who I'm going to fight until that same day and I always came out on top. I just fight how I fight. I don't worry about adjusting to my opposition; my opposition has to adjust to me.”

Ortiz, who is ranked No. 8 by the IBF, No. 10 by the WBA and No. 11 by the WBC and WBO at junior welterweight, has won two straight fights since his loss to Teofimo Lopez for his WBO title in February 2024. In his last fight, Ortiz overcame a slow start to win a one-sided unanimous decision against Yomar Alamo on March 15 at the Caribe Royale.
