Claressa Shields set for July 26th heavyweight title defense on DAZN

Claressa Shields will face Lani Daniels in her return to action this summer

Claressa Shields announced today that she’ll defend her heavyweight titles on July 26th against IBF light heavyweight champ Lani Daniels in Detroit, Michigan.

Shields (16-0, 3 KO) claimed “undisputed” heavyweight glory by stopping Danielle Perkins in February, a feat offset by the fact that the IBF belt had been vacant for over a year and the WBO belt straight-up didn’t exist beforehand. She subsequently tested positive for marijuana, but found herself cleared after the Michigan commission admitted to a “procedural error” in the collection process.

Not that a legitimate test failure would have reflected poorly on her. Stupid that it’s still on the banned substance list at all.

New Zealand’s Daniels (11-2-2, 1 KO) started her career 4-2-2 before a 7-0 run saw her claim titles at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. Thing is, neither of those titles existed before Daniels won them, so she gets an asterisk as well.

Still, she’s about as credible an opponent as Shields can get at this point outside of a Savannah Marshall rematch or Shadasia Green fight. Just not a lot of active female fighters both that big and that good.

Honestly Shields should just start racking up a title defense every month or 2 over these types of opponents. They have no chance whatsoever against her.

And eventually she could further enhance her claim of being the "GWOAT" by having like 35 title defenses of the Heavyweight title

Tony Harrison signs with Salita Promotions, to fight on July 26 in Detroit

Tony Harrison has signed with Salita Promotions.

Harrison will make his return to the ring at middleweight on July 26 against Edward Diaz as the co-feature of Claressa Shields-Lani Daniels at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Harrison, 29-4-1 (21 KOs), will fight for the first time since his March 2023 stoppage loss to Tim Tszyu in Australia. Harrison, a 34-year-old from Detroit, will return to the ring in his hometown with a new promoter. Harrison upset Jermell Charlo in December 2018 to become the WBC junior middleweight titleholder. He would lose the belt to Charlo in the rematch, nearly a year to the date of their first bout.

Diaz, 15-6 (12 KOs), enters the contest following a third-round knockout win over Juan Martinez in April. Before that bout, he was knocked out by Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz. Gonzalez-Ortiz would go on to fight Edgar Berlanga, who would stop him in one round.

Diaz, a 34-year-old from El Congo, Dominican Republic, holds a win over former contender Mark DeLuca and was stopped by current WBC junior welterweight titleholder Alberto Puello.

“We are excited to get back in there and get to work,” said Harrison via a press release. “It’s been a minute, but we are going to roll out like George Foreman did for his comeback. I have a short window left, so we are going to be active, keep winning, and eventually get back to the mountain top.”Other undercard bouts announced were heavyweight Pryce Taylor, 8-0 (6 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York, facing veteran Robert Simms, 12-4-1 (3 KOs), of Saginaw, Michigan, in an eight-round bout. Women’s junior welterweight Samantha Worthington, 11-0 (7 KOs), of Lexington, Kentucky, will face Victoire Piteau of Saint-Maur, Indre, France, in a WBA interim junior welterweight title fight. Starting the main card on DAZN will be women’s featherweight Caroline Veyre, 9-1, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, facing Licia Boudersa, 23-3-2 (4 KOs) of Lille, Nord, France, in a WBC women’s featherweight eliminator.

Sadly the women's division is so shit, that there is zero chance of someone sparking out this obnoxious sow. Women's boxing is a waste of time, they should just scrap it and save some money.

Pryce Taylor wins in a boring ass fight against fat Robert Simms.

The 2 ladies bouts to open the show were fairly typical. Neither fighter especially skilled. No real power on display. 2 decision wins.

Tony Harrison and Claressa Shields' bouts still to go.

Tony Harrison wins almost every round in a fight, gets dropped heavily in the 9th, and survives an exciting 10th round to take a Unanimous Decision. Something about that 9th round always spells trouble for Tony Harrison.

Daniels was on her bike first half but stood her ground the later the fight went on and was trading with Shields, she was making Shields miss loads as well, Shields was throwing punches in bunches and still missing with every shot which is an achievement in itself, no doubt she was a wide winner though, the day we see Claressa Shields wiped out will have to wait I suppose

CLARESSA SHIELDS-LANI DANIELS CARD GENERATES ALMOST $1.5 MILLION GATE IN DETROIT

Claressa Shields’ third time fighting at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit was definitely the charm.

The Ring has learned that the card Shields headlined there Saturday night generated nearly a $1.5 million live gate, which accounted for more than the combined ticket revenue from her first two fights at the home venue of the NBA’s Pistons and NHL’s Red Wings. Shields revealed during her post-fight press conference early Sunday morning that the event was sold out.

“Out of 15,369 seats,” Shields said, “we sold 15,369 seats. … For one, I just wanna thank God because I have been praying for a sold-out LCA since the first time I fought here. And I didn’t think it was possible with just people from Flint and Detroit. And I was right about that.

“We had to bring Brooklyn, New York, Texas, Ohio, the UK. We had to bring New Zealand. We had to bring Atlanta. Miami in the house, Florida. They in here from everywhere — Texas, Cali. That’s what it was gonna take to fill this place up.”

Shields (17-0, 3 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1 fighter pound-for-pound in women’s boxing, decisively defeated New Zealand’s Lani Daniels by unanimous decision in a 10-round main event DAZN streamed live. Shields,30, retained her IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO heavyweight titles by beating Daniels (11-3-2, 1 KO).

Reaching seven figures in gate receipts was a milestone for Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who won world titles in five weight classes. The Flint, Michigan, native’s first fight in Detroit eight years ago occurred at a venue, MGM Grand Detroit, that held approximately 500.

Shields has since become an undisputed champion at middleweight, junior middleweight and heavyweight. A motion picture based on her inspiring life story, “The Fire Inside,” was released in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day.

Nine of her 17 professional fights have taken place in Detroit or Flint.

“Everybody who from Flint and Michigan, I thank you for always showing up and being consistent,” said Shields, who had Grammy-nominated rap artist Rick Ross walk her into the ring Saturday. “Because I knew at least 11,000 from Flint and Detroit would be here. But the last 5,000 that came is from all over, around the world. And I’m just so grateful for that. I thank each and every one of y’all that came, that spent money, that bought tickets, who flew out here, got y’all hotels. Listen, y’all had Rick Ross up at a bad hotel because all the hotels was sold out.”

She also acknowledged help selling tickets from Detroit native Tony Harrison, a former WBC 154-pound champ who fought in the co-feature, and six other fighters from Flint and the Detroit area who competed on the undercard.
