He was one tough son of a gun. I'll never forget the two rounds I sparred with him before my first amateur fight. He was just recently out of prison. He kicked my ass, dropped me in the corner with a double hook, body-head. He probably had 25-30 lbs on me also. I can thank my trainer for that. I didn't feel so bad watching him fight in so many great fights during his career. RIP Dwight.

Looking at boxrec, he fought his 1st pro fight in '78 and we spared in '77. He was doing 6 rds that day with 3 different boxers, 2 rds each with me being the 1st one he spared. I'm sure his people knew they had a guy that was going places. My trainer was always putting me in with newer pros when I first started training. It was learn to fight or quit at that gym. This was at Joe Frazier's gym. Qawi fought 3 guys from that gym, Jerry Martin, Mike and Leon Spinks. There were so many great fighters there back then and great sparring sessions.

One of my favorite Qawi moments was in the 15th rd vs Holyfield. He knew he was behind on the cards and needed something big, so he pretended he was hurt, drew Evander in and swung for the fences. Terrific fighter had decent power, a surprisingly good jab, good chin, stamina and very good head movement.

- Hah, he pulled that wounded duck scenario on Big George who had been bouncing him around like a basketball thinking the ref was gonna stop him before Qawi popped him.

Well, Qawi did put Vander in ICU in his best fight, an EPIC all time brawl.

Still in mourning over Big George that knocked me me back more than a few paces…R.I.P…
