Barry McGuigan vs. Wilfredo Gomez

Post by scorpio83 »

15 Rounds Featherweight Bout

McGuigan would overwhelm the Bazooka with his inside punching power on the body and head, then he would stop him in 12 rounds. What do you guys think and who do you got?

Disagree. Gomez would slap Barry around and win a decision, IMO. Gomez lost to two HOF fighters at 126 who had different styles than Barry, who I was a fan of. Barry wasn’t Sanchez or The Professor, both of whom would have beaten him badly. Gomez loved the inside fight (Pintor was a great example, Zárate too, Juan Kid Meza, and several others). McGuigan would bring it and while Gomez wasn’t the puncher he was at 122, he hit hard enough and had superior boxing skills and IMO would win a UD,

I think Gomez could possibly be outworked. Barry, from the Laporte and Pedroza fights, was a machine. I'm not saying I would bet against Gomez, but it's a very tough fight.

The ONLY WAY Barry McGuigan wins is if the fight is in the area of the United Kingdom. Outside Britain, Bazooka overwhelms The Cyclone.

Yeah, it would be a tough fight either way and Barry was a machine in those fights, but so was Gomez vs LaPorte - which could have been scored a 12-round shutout, and in about 10 title defenses I saw him fight. Outworking Gomez would take some doing because he was pretty relentless himself and IMO he was more skilled than Barry.
