PHOENIX, AZ — In a devastating turn of events, Pedro Antonio “Tony” Rodriguez, a Mexican super-bantamweight professional boxer, was discovered dead in his hotel room early Sunday morning, shortly after losing a bout in Phoenix. He was just 37 years old.
Rodriguez, born in Durango, Mexico, stepped into the ring at the American Royal Palace on Saturday night as part of the “Brawl in the Barrio” event promoted by Del Sol Boxing Promotions and sanctioned by the Arizona State Boxing and MMA Commission. After a six-round unanimous-decision loss to undefeated Phillip Vella, Rodriguez returned to his hotel intending to meet other fighters for dinner—but never showed up.
