Daniel Dubois joins new trainer following split with Don Charles

Daniel Dubois has left Don Charles in favour of a new trainer

Following his second stoppage defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in July, Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) has split with Don Charles and joined Tony Sims in Essex, as reported by On The Record Boxing.

The 27-year-old was taken apart with ease by the two-time undisputed heavyweight champion on July 25 in Wembley Stadium. Usyk was levels above the Londoner, who was knocked out in the fifth round.

Following the loss, trainer Kieran Farrell was quick to announce his departure from the team.

Following the shambolic build-up to the undisputed clash with Usyk, where the 27-year-old’s dad held a pre-fight party at his house, then threatened to pull his son from the fight if his unticketed entourage were not let into the stadium, Farrell sensibly stepped away from the team.

Farrell announced on August 13: “I have made the decision to part ways with Team Dubois.

“In the 18 months we’ve achieved so much, including an unforgettable night at Wembley stadium.

“Helping Daniel become world heavyweight champion has been truly rewarding on a number of levels. I wish Daniel all the best going forward.

“I won’t be making any further comment at present, but needless to say I’m excited for what’s next for myself and look forward to making many more world champions.”

Dubois’ overbearing father has a track record for axing training teams, following stints with Martin Bowers at The Peacock gym and Shane McGuigan.

And now, Don Charles appears to be another casualty in a long line of sacked trainers.

Who is Tony Sims?

It’s not yet been confirmed if Daniel Dubois has linked up with trainer Tony Sims, who also looks after Conor Benn, and recently been helping his nephew Joy Essex train for his upcoming MisFits fight on August 30.

Tony Sims is a boxing trainer from Essex.

Sims has trained Conor Benn since the start of his career, with Conor’s father Nigel having sparred with Tony.

Throughout his career, Sims has trained many big names, including Anthony Joshua.

Tony is also the father of Demi Sims, who was set to make her boxing debut on the cancelled KSI vs Dillon Danis card.

Now working exclusively with Matchroom Sport fighters, Sims has come a long way since his early days as a coach and now trains multiple champions and prospects.

Tony said, “When I started out training, I had a few club-fighters. Looking back I probably never thought I was going to be in a good position, because there were so many big promoters in those days and I was just chucking my fighters on little, tiny shows at the Elephant and Castle, just club shows, dinner shows, average fighters.

“I learned a lot in those days, corner work. I was fortunate enough to do a bit of cut work with legendary coach Ernie Fossey. Sometimes I was in the changing room with ‘handler of journeymen’ Nobby Nobbs because they were the calibre of fighters I had. I picked up a lot of good tips in those days. I worked in the changing rooms with Jimmy Tibbs, I worked alongside Jim McDonnell for a few years.”

Bit suprised that Simms has been willing to take him on . I know its buisness and its how they earn a living , but there has to be an element of pride involved has well , when you see someone like DD , move trainers every time he loses , his father dictating how the trainer is to do his job , ,

After the first couple of times of watching him move , its obvious , your knoledge and imput is only going to be listened to in small doses , and your gonna get the blame when he gives up , , so why would you put yourself in that position .

Can't be arse going back to find the post and where i said it , but after he took the knee against Joyce , i remember posting , then , that although it may off been the right thing to do at the time saving damage , . He himself would'nt of known how bad or good it was , he would off just known it was damaged , and he gave up , i said then it will just make it easier the next time, and the time after that , which it did , , So basicly alls it leaves with DD, is a fighter , that if he hits you you can be in trouble , but you know hit him hard and hit him often , and he will give up and thats something Simms or no one else can train out of him , .

No, he was with Charles for first fight with Usyk. McGuigan was doing interviews as an "impartial" fan and making predictions. McGuigan I think was with Dubois for WBA (interim and then regular) reign - from post Joyce through to Usyk (but it was Charles in the corner for Usyk 1). He was 4-0 with McGuigan.

yeah fancy leaving your trainer after you lose to a ATG. i would understand if it were against Chisora. Dubious gonna run out of UK trainers this rate

Heard he lasted an afternoon with Mark Tibbs who kicked him out his gym because of his Dad's hands on approach!
