Anthony Olascuaga to defend WBO flyweight belt vs. Juan Carlos Camacho Jnr on Sept. 11

Five fights were announced Thursday for a card in Las Vegas that will precede the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford super-fight.

Anthony Olascuaga will defend his WBO flyweight title against Juan Carlos Camacho Jnr on Thursday, September 11 at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, two days before Alvarez-Crawford. Olascuaga, 9-1 (6 KOs), of Los Angeles has made two defenses of the title he won in July of 2024, when he knocked out Riku Kano. The 26-year-old will be fighting in the United States for the first time since 2022 after five straight fights in Japan.

Camacho, 19-1 (8 KOs), of Ponce, Puerto Rico is the no. 1 rated challenger for Olascuaga’s belt, and is rated no. 13 by the IBF and no. 12 with the WBC.

The 112lbs title fight will headline a new Ring Magazine series “The Underdog” which is set to highlight prospects and contenders.

Also announced for the card was a matchup between junior lightweight Justin Viloria, 9-0 (7 KOs), of Whittier, California against Joshafat Ortiz, 13-1 (6 KOs), of Reading, Pennsylvania in an eight-round fight. Viloria, 21, is a southpaw coming off his biggest win yet, a fourth round knockout of Alejandro Yung Wong in April, while the 29-year-old Ortiz has won two straight since losing a split decision to Carlos Rosario in April of 2023.

In a high stakes showdown between junior middleweights, Jalil Hackett, 9-1 (7 KOs), will meet Elijah Vines, 8-0 (7 KOs), in an eight-round fight. Hackett, 22, is coming off his first loss, a split decision against Jose Roman last December. Vines, 30, has been less busy in official fights, but was busy last year with Team Combat League.

Also scheduled for action is a showcase fight for Jamar Talley, a former Team USA member with a 3-0 (3 KOs) record. The Camden, New Jersey native, who has been spending time training with the Crawford camp, will face Isaiah Thompson, 11-4-2 (10 KOs), a 27-year-old from Fort Lauderdale, Florida in a six-round fight.

Rounding out the card, Emiliano Alvarado, 8-0 (5 KOs), of Palm Springs, California will face Juan Garcia, 7-0 (2 KOs), in a six-round showdown of junior featherweights taking their first significant steps-up.

THE RING, DAZN TO LAUNCH NEW ‘UNDERDOG’ SERIES IN LAS VEGAS DURING CANELO-CRAWFORD FIGHT WEEK

The Ring will launch its new series, “The Underdog,” during Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford fight week next month in Las Vegas.

DAZN will stream what will become a monthly series in January. “The Underdog” will regularly feature rising contenders, prospects and occasionally underexposed champions in designed “50-50 fights.”

The inaugural main event of the series will match WBO flyweight champion Anthony Olascuaga (9-1, 6 KOs) against number one contender Juan Carlos Camacho (19-1, 8 KOs) the night of September 11 at Fontainebleau Las Vegas’ BleauLive Theater. Tickets to this event, which start at $50, went on sale today and can be bought via Ticketmaster.com by clicking this link.

The undercard will feature a bout between junior lightweight prospects Justin Viloria (9-0, 7 KOs) and Joshafat Ortiz (13-1, 6 KOs). Junior middleweights Jalil Hackett (9-1, 7 KOs) and Elijah Vines (8-0, 7 KOs), junior featherweights Emiliano Alvarado (8-0, 5 KOs) and Juan Garcia (7-0, 2 KOs) and cruiserweights Jamar Talley (3-0, 3 KOs) and Isaiah Thompson (11-4-2, 10 KOs) will square off on the undercard as well.

“The Underdog is all about giving fans the fights they want – competitive, unpredictable matchups that highlight the next generation of stars,” Rick Reeno, CEO of The Ring, said. “September’s teaser event is a preview of what’s to come and, starting in January next year, fans can expect must-watch action every month.”

In addition to staging at least one show per month in 2026, creative innovations for “The Underdog,” aimed at reimagining the sport and enhancing the fan experience, will be unveiled soon.

FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION ANTHONY OLASCUAGA READY TO STAMP HIS STATUS

Anthony Olascuaga encapsulates the ethos of The Ring’s new series “The Underdog,” an event he’s headlining Thursday night at Fontainebleau on DAZN as he defends his WBO flyweight title against Juan Carlos Camacho-Rivera.

The 26-year-old Los Angeles native is an underexposed champion, having fought more times abroad than he has in the United States during his five-year career. When Olascuaga (9-1, 6 KOs) steps inside the ring against Camacho-Rivera (19-1, 8 KOs), it will mark the first time his mother has been in attendance to watch him fight.

“I'm really looking forward to this opportunity. It's a dream come true to be headlining a show in Las Vegas,” Olascuaga told The Ring.

Olascuaga’s last five fights have taken place in Japan. He suffered his first professional loss there by stoppage against Kenshiro Teraji in April 2023, and he knocked out Riku Kano in July 2024 for the crown he now carries. He has since successfully defended the title twice, with the most recent occasion coming in March against Hiroto Kyoguchi.

The momentum has allowed “La Princesa” – who often sports colorful hair – to focus on his burgeoning boxing career and to quit jobs like driving cabs and cutting hair to make ends meet.

Olascuaga is surrounded by a world-class team featuring career-long coach Rudy Hernandez, a finalist for The Ring’s 2024 Trainer of the Year award, as well as training mate Junto Nakatani, The Ring’s No. 7-ranked pound-for-pound fighter.

“I gain a lot of knowledge working with Junto, and every time he comes back from Japan, it's like he's on a new level,” said Olascuaga, who has partaken in hundreds of rounds of technical sparring with the Japanese juggernaut. “The work is like friendly chess matches, but I'm getting better as I go as well.

“You will definitely see a new and improved version of me against Camacho-Rivera, balancing my defense and offensive aggression. I'm right where I want to be, and need to be. I’m looking to collect more belts after I beat him.”

Olascuaga is familiar with Camacho-Rivera because he served as a TV analyst for the 28-year-old Puerto Rican’s split decision win against Jayson Mama in October.

“I got to see him fight firsthand from ringside,” Olascuaga said. “He's a formidable opponent. I talked to him a little bit, and he seemed to be a good guy inside and outside of the ring. But come fight night, he's not my friend.”

Camacho-Rivera was dropped twice by Mama but mustered the win. His last time out, in March, he sneaked by with another split decision win in an eight-rounder against an unheralded contender in Mexico who sported a 6-6-2 record.

“I see some cracks in his style that I can exploit,” Olascuaga said. “He's a defensive counter-puncher who fights off of his back foot a lot. I see that he has a lot of openings for my right hand. I just need to create my angles and get my shots in. I have to be defensively responsible. I can't just go in there looking for the knockout. We'll see how the fight plays out.

“Considering the opportunity that I've been given, I want to show out with a knockout win. I can't wait to get in the ring and throw down to give an exciting show. I have the power, and everyone I spar says I have the power. I need to prove that I have that dog in me once the lights come on.”

The Presentation of this event feels like the short lived WWF's Shotgun Saturday Night mixed with the also short lived KO Nation.

I don't think this will last.

Pretty good action in some of these bouts.

Hackett vs Vines was fun while it lasted, and a good performance for Hackett.

Alvarado vs Garcia was a nice little scrap of young unbeatens.

The matchmaking ain't bad, I just don't know about the Graffiti artists, and the Models standing around trying to look cool

Easy work for Olascuaga , lack of experience from Camacho , holding his feet and not throwing while backed on the ropes, happened just before the stoppage as well but he got away with it, Olascuaga was just raining down punches, some hard uppercuts rocked him, he just managed to get out of trouble but not for long, Olascuaga was opening him up, not everything was getting through but again lack of savvy from Camacho not aware the ref was about to step in while he was under fire and sure enough, it was over in 2

Anthony Olascuaga seeks three-belt unification bout with Ricardo Sandoval

Anthony Olascuaga sensed the stars were aligned earlier this summer.

All he had to do for his part was to win his next bout, which he did – and in emphatic fashion.

Olascuaga, the reigning WBO 112lbs title claimant, is keen to next face unified WBA/WBC titlist Ricardo Sandoval in an all-California clash. Olascuaga cleared out a mandatory title defense with a rousing second-round stoppage of Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Camacho on Thursday at Fontainebleau’s BleauLive Theater in Las Vegas.

The occasion marked Olascuaga’s first fight in the US since 2022, following five straight appearances in Japan. With the win, Olascuaga, 10-1 (7 KOs), is free to face whomever he would like for his next assignment.

There is no other direction he would rather travel than to the top of the division.

“Ricardo Sandoval is American; he’s from California, like me,” Olascuaga told BS. “That’s a fight that I can now see happening in L.A. or somewhere in the states.”

Ironically, Sandoval, 27-2 (18 KOs), also traveled to Japan from the Southern California region for his latest win. A 26-year-old flyweight from Rialto, Sandoval dethroned two-division and reigning WBC/WBA 112lbs champ Kenshiro Teraji via split decision on July 30 in Yokohama, Japan.

Teraji is responsible for the lone defeat on Olascauga’s record, which came via ninth-round knockout in their April 2023 lineal/WBC/WBA 108lbs championship affair.

Olascuaga took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice in place of an ill Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez. He dropped down from flyweight for the opportunity but was overmatched in the last-minute title fight, which came in just his sixth pro bout.

Five straight wins have since followed for “La Princesa,” including his high-profile beatdown of Camacho live on DAZN. Prior to Sandoval-Teraji, Olascuaga wasn’t entirely sure of his next move given the resistance from Teraji to run it back, even with three belts at stake.

That changed in a big way earlier this summer.

“It’s going to sound weird, but Kenshiro losing really made the division that much more accessible for me to fight for the other belts,” noted Olascuaga. “Kenshiro already said in the past that he wasn’t interested in fighting me again. In his mind, he already beat me, so there went my shot.

“I wasn’t rooting for him to lose and I wasn’t happy that he lost. But from a business perspective, it opened up a door for being able to fight for the belts I’ve always wanted.”

Sandoval’s first title defense was not yet announced as this story goes to publication. It was theorized that his own lucrative rematch with Teraji could be in play for either later this year or early 2026. However, nothing concrete has yet come from those rumors.
