Is British boxing finished?

Post by tigermoth87 »

Just ONE world champion. A bunch of has-beings like AJ and Tyson Fury hanging around along with a bunch of guys who have been exposed at the top level like Callum Smith hanging around. And, more importantly--no good prospects coming through other than Moses Itauma.

A few of the boxers may win a trinket for a while, but will get exposed as soon as they step in with someone world level. It's gonna be a decade of shit for British boxing I predict.

British Boxing had 1 Heavyweight Champion in the entire 20th Century.
2 if you count Frank Bruno

They've had 3 already in the 21st century, and are looking set for a 4th in the near future.

Why would British Boxing be finished?

Outside of the heavyweight division, I'd agree it's poor

Slightly off topic, just intrigued - who are your 3 heavyweight champions of the 21 century.

Is it
Fury, Joshua, Lewis.
Fury, Joshua, Dubious,
Fury, Joshua, Haye.

Everything comes in cycles.
We have definitely got fringe world level fighters now and some other good prospects coming through.
People like Visioli looks a good prospect and I bet there are countless others.

Who knows? If you'd have said Itauma 5 years ago nobody would have known who he was.

Nobody. There's no "sons of legends" like Eubank Jr coming through--he's at the end of his career and Connor Benn is an utter plum who nobody likes. No standout amateurs. No former Olympians turning pro who people are excited for, no promising prospects who already have a bunch of wins under their belt.

At the most, we may have another Leigh Wood--a B level guy who manages to dig deep and pick up a few good wins and have a run with the belt but is never the division's top guy. But I think it's gonna be a decade before we have someone who can widely be considered the best in his division again.

Does anyone actually care about the belts anymore I know I don’t. The sanctioning bodies have made a mockery out of belts now, all I care for are good fights.

Doesn’t matter, the broadcasters will stick any old rubbish on PPV now, quality is totally irrelevant to them.

Hell there's 5 since Lewis' reign carried over from the previous century, and Haye won one also. I forgot all about David Haye

Why would British Boxing be finished?
Our claims to bonafide heavyweight champions are quite thin.

Bob Fitzsimmons left Britain as a child, learned to box in Australia and New Zealand and was an American citizen when he KOd Corbett.

Lennox Lewis left Britain as a child, learned to box in Canada and only came back after the Olympics as a business decision.

Herbie Hide and Henry Akinwande's claims are laughable. Bruno didn't beat the Man who beat the Man but he did beat McCall who beat Lewis but Lewis wasn't the Man till years later.

Tyson Fury is the only born and bred Brit ever to beat the Man. Joshua got a bauble because Fury was stripped, Haye and Dubois got WBA baubles the WBA snatched from the Man.

Even with the American heavyweight going extinct we haven't done all that well really.

Who’d have ever thought 15 years ago that Tyson Fury would become a PPV megastar whilst he was unofficially losing to McDermott, uppercutting himself in the face, and getting dropped heavily on Channel 5? Not to criticise him, just shows you never really know what’s going to happen in the future. I don’t watch enough amateur stuff to know how the British pipeline is looking tbh, but hopefully there’s a few strong prospects coming up.

Amateur Boxing in the UK is struggling for Seniors.

Team GB Boxers have to be disciplined, prepared to give up any other career prospects, live away from home, hope to fall into one of just 7 weight categories, to qualify for a place, and to medal, at the Olympics to give them a springboard into the Pro's that equals or betters that of the social media influencers.

It's a big ask....

While all you say is correct, it's still a lot better than Brits did at any other point in the last like 60 or 70 years of Heavyweight history ya gotta admit that

If I'm not mistaken he was only ever a WBA "Regular" Champion while Wladimir Klitschko was the WBA Super Champion. Meaning, Wladimir Klitschko was the WBA Champion all the while

Nope. Haye was the only genuine wba title.

Wlad never held the WBA belt til he beat him.

It was after Wlad won the WBA belt that they created the regular.

Sigh.

The WBA regular/super fiasco began all the way back in 2001.

Hopkins had all three belts and yet William Joppy and Howard Eastman fought for what? Their inaugural 'ordinary' belt. November 2001.

Wladimir already beat the WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev.

For some spurious reason the WBA belt wasn't on the line and his ex victim Valuev was elevated to WBA champ, who Haye barely beat.

Wlad was the Man and beat the WBA champ, Chagaev. He later easily relieved Haye of his ill-gotten WBA belt, who blamed it all on his little toe.

Apart from Ball we have......

Sheeraz, Dubois, Azim, Smith, Wardley, Noakes, Simpson, Itauma, Turner (Jack who I have high hopes for), maybe Aloys Jr and Liddard.

There's probably more.

The problem is (I think) is that there's nothing on regular telly. I could be wrong as I don't live in Blighty.
