Editors - State abbreviations

Post by Colin »

Many moons ago, when we had only 250,000 or so bouts entered, we decided for uniformity of records to only use state abbreviations rather than full names. Recently the vogue has been to do this for the US but it is everybody's choice for Australia and Canadian provinces. I don't think adding provinces help for South Africa. To save typing, and hence time when entering single bouts rather than programs, and too get more on one page (either printed or on the screen) could we go back to the abbreviations for these countries. Canadian abbreviations are in the user guide :( . For Australia it is QLD (Queensland), NSW (New South Wales), VIC (Victoria), SA (South Australia), WA (Western Australia) and TAS (Tasmania). John will be able to convert all existing entries to this format.

It would also be good to add London as a region rather than a place, then when we find the true venue we can add it ie. Holborn, London or Bethnal Green, London, England

$Bill, I can't get the e-mail to come up. Can you send it again. I couldn't even get the e-mails from this topic to open so maybe their is something wrong with the system at the moment.

Colin,
Agree regarding Canadian and Australian abbreviations. I have been entering as abbreviations, per the agreement, although my preference is to spell out in full. Also agree that all abbreviations should be in the User Guide.
Do not agree about not entering South African provinces - not sure why they should held differently. Sometimes the province is all that is reported as far as the locale (eg. Fighter A won last night in Gauteng).

Kevin,
Not sure about the London as a Region thing. Seems odd to have to enter some cities in one field and others in another. Maybe I need a better understanding as to what Bethnal Green and Holborn and the like actually are. Are they neighborhoods, districts or what? If so, aren't they similar to say, Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, etc.
I believe there was also some sort of agreement not to enter those and instead just enter (venue),New York, NY. Same situation or different?
Do we need yet another field?

Regards,

The only reason I didn't think it was necessary for South Africa was the size of the provinces. The entire country is smaller than each of the three largest Australian states so any place is easier to find if you just look at a map, whereas for the US, Canada and Australia, a clue is helpful.
I really just think that the more information with the less writing the better it is.

Kevin
I think the area of London is helpful to delineate programs that are on the same night. Unfortunately most references do not give the area. My main concern is space taken up eg. Rushcutter's Bay Stadium, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. You don't get too many of these to a screen and I find it breaks up the (impression of the) record.

Colin, it is a Private Message, not an E-mail. The information is as follows:
1922 Billy McCann is Billy McCann of Cleveland. December of 1921 Arizona Republic reported that McCann had sailed from San Francisco for Australia to fight a 5 bout series he had signed for. In case you run across some more.

Thanks $Bill. I have changed it. Took the bout, and much of Hop Harry Stone's record, from the 1924 Australasian Boxing Record by Anthony Kirk. I'll try and get to that eras papers to see if I can find more for him. It differs from an early Ring Record Book with Jim Clabby's record so there is plenty to be checked.
