SOURCES: VERGIL ORTIZ, ERICKSON LUBIN FINALIZING OCT. 18 JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT FIGHT

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Erickson Lubin are finalizing a deal for a junior middleweight fight Oct. 18 in the U.S. on DAZN, sources told The Ring.

Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) is coming off a career-best performance, a unanimous-decision victory over former titleholder Israil Madrimov in February in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Ortiz was in talks to fight Keith Thurman, but Thurman is set to challenge Sebastian Fundora one week later in Las Vegas, The Ring reported Thursday.

Ortiz, 27, is rated No. 2 by The Ring at 154 pounds. There are talks to match him with Jaron “Boots” Ennis early next year in one of the best fights that can be made in boxing. Ennis will make his junior middleweight debut Oct. 11 vs. Uisma Lima.

Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) has reeled off three consecutive wins since he was stopped by Fundora in Round 9 of their April 2022 slugfest. Most recently, Lubin TKOed Andreal Holmes in Round 11 of an IBF title eliminator in May to become the mandatory challenger.

The organization ordered Bakhram Murtalizev to defend his IBF title against Lubin, but Lubin, 29, will instead head into a higher profile fight, albeit without a title on the line.

In Lubin’s lone title challenge, he was stopped in the opening round by Jermell Charlo in October 2017. Lubin is The Ring’s No. 7 boxer at 154 pounds.

Ortiz Jr. stated it's not happening and that he's targeting a title shot against Zayas. This was posted in BN24, so take it for what it's worth.

Thought the Hammer was going to face Murtazaliev, but it is nice, though. Vergil can make it with his quick thinking and targeting the body, Lubin is a dangerous man.

It's a bit unfair
I want to say put Ennis v Bohachuk in together, winner fights Ortiz because he has the belt, but I saw Ortiz v Bohachuk

Vergil Ortiz-Erickson Lubin set for fall showdown

PLANT CITY, Florida – Former junior middleweight title challenger Erickson Lubin has chosen to bypass a title shot against IBF 154lbs champion Bakhram Murtazaliev in favor of a more lucrative clash with unbeaten WBC interim beltholder Vergil Ortiz Jnr. The DAZN-streamed bout looks set for November, likely the 8th, with Dickies Arena in Texas under consideration to host.

DAZN will formally announce the bout Wednesday. “The fans are in for a treat,” Lubin promised in a prepared statement. “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. This fight is about redemption. I’m back – for everything.”

According to boxing news, eight days after Murtazaliev-Lubin received a purse bid deadline from the IBF to strike a deal, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions presented a package that will pay Lubin more than double to fight Ortiz, the 27-year-old who knocked out his first 21 foes.

The talks required a delay as Ortiz’s negotiating team waited out a Friday deadline for new WBO 154lbs champion Xander Zayas to extend a bout agreement.

But Zayas is promoted by Top Rank, which saw its broadcast deal with ESPN expire following his title victory over Mexico’s Jorge Garcia Perez July 26 at the Madison Square Garden Theater.

Zayas publicly posted a letter on X from Golden Boy President Eric Gomez to Top Rank executive Carl Moretti requesting some general deal points – a 50-50 purse split, with the fight being staged in Nevada or California by December – and Zayas wrote over the letter on social media that he wanted the bout in Puerto Rico.

“Don’t run away now. You’ve had three days to agree and we haven’t heard a thing from your side,” Ortiz, 23-0 (21 KOs), replied to Zayas on X.

Without a substantive offer in hand, Golden Boy moved on and revisited Lubin, whom they originally sought for an Ortiz bout in February.

Lubin was ultimately passed over then by recent WBA champion Madrimov.

Now 29, Lubin is more than three years removed from his April 2022 stoppage loss to current WBC 154lbs champion Sebastian Fundora.

Fourteen months later, Lubin returned to defeat Luis Arias before he upset Premier Boxing Champions prospect Jesus Ramos by unanimous decision in September 2023.

But then Lubin, 27-2 (19 KOs), went absent again – this time for 21 months – before taking an IBF elimination fight against obscure foe Ardreal Holmes that Garry Jonas, Lubin’s promoter, placed as a ProBoxTV main event on May 10. Lubin won in the 11th-round.

Not only will Lubin will earn significantly more for the Ortiz chance than if he’d have fought Murtazaliev, Jonas also believes that Lubin stands a significant chance of scoring the upset.

“We don’t consider Vergil Ortiz the boogeyman,” Jonas told BS, reminding that Ortiz was dropped twice by Serhii Bohachuk in their August 2024 bout and that his best win was likely against Uzbekistan’s Israil Madrimov. “I’m not sure that Madrimov is all that,” Jonas concluded. “And Ortiz isn’t knocking anyone [high caliber] out at 154.”

With Murtazaliev coming off a destructive third-round knockout of former WBO 154lbs champion Tim Tszyu in October, Jonas said that while he has full confidence in Lubin defeating the Russian, he had to look at the opponents through a business lens.

“If we lose to Bakhram, maybe it’s all over for us,” Jonas said while considering the difficulty of those recent long layoffs. “But if we lose to Ortiz, because everyone thinks he’s the boogeyman of the division, we can get more fights.”

Ortiz’s father, Vergil Snr, said he doesn’t want his son beholden to the IBF’s 10-pound, day-after-weigh-in rehydration limit for a Murtazaliev meeting. That leverage allowed Jonas to be demanding with Golden Boy over the request for an option for another fight with a possibly victorious Lubin. One option was accepted, with a sizable purse for Lubin that nearly doubles what he’ll make against Ortiz.

Jonas admitted he’s been emboldened by the “horseshoe” he feels he’s been carrying through an array of inspired showings by his fighters – Angelo Leo’s featherweight-title knockout of Luis Alberto Lopez, Lamont Roach Jnr’s draw with lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis in March and Ramon Cardenas’ knockdown of undisputed junior-featherweight champion Naoya Inoue in May.

“Here we go again,” Jonas said. “The horseshoe is real. ‘Hammer’s’ going to beat Ortiz.”

Vergil Ortiz Jnr-Erickson Lubin set for November 8

Undefeated WBC interim super welterweight world champion Vergil Ortiz Jnr, 23-0 (21 KOs), will headline a card at Dickies Arena in his Fort Worth hometown against Erickson Lubin, 27-2 (19 KOs), on November 8. Lubin enters the bout as the IBF’s No. 1-ranked fighter, while also sitting at No. 5 with the WBO, and No. 10 with the WBC. The 12-round world championship clash, presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with ProBox, will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

More information on tickets and the undercard will be announced very soon.

“I’m always happy to be a part of the fights that fans want to see,” said Ortiz in a press release. “See you guys November 8!”

“I want to thank Golden Boy, PBC and ProBox for making this happen,” said Lubin. “I think the fans are in for a treat. This is the moment I’ve been waiting for, this fight is about redemption, I’m back for everything.”

“Vergil Ortiz Jnr is the most ducked fighter in boxing – period,” said Golden Boy Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “Big names talk tough until Vergil’s name comes up, then suddenly the phone goes silent. I commend Erickson Lubin; he has the guts that these fighters nowadays lack – courage! He has dared to enter Vergil’s den. On Nov. 8 at Dickies Arena, fans are going to see why everyone else keeps running from Vergil Ortiz Jr.”

“Since Fundora, Lubin fought Arias, who he dominated and stopped; the undefeated Ramos, highly touted and yet couldn’t do anything with Lubin; and the undefeated Holmes looked like a scared puppy,” said ProBox TV CEO Garry Jonas. “Don’t be surprised, the Hammer is going to beat Ortiz.”

Ortiz is coming off two sensational wins over Israil Madrimov and Serhii Bohachuk, going the distance for the first two times in his professional career and performing no worse for it. The Bohachuk brawl was heralded as one of the fights of the year. In February, Ortiz figured out Madrimov's herky-jerky style and landed concussive power shots down the stretch to secure a unanimous decision. Ortiz trains under the guidance of acclaimed coach Robert Garcia, surrounded by elite fighters at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy.

Lubin has established himself as one of the premier contenders in boxing’s deep and talented junior middleweight division. In April 2022, he fought bravely in a loss against Sebastian Fundora, stunningly knocking down the lanky "Towering Inferno" against the run of play and fighting through grotesque swelling. He has since won three fights in a row, two of them by knockout.

“I’m always happy to be a part of the fights that fans want to see,” said Vergil Ortiz. “See you guys November 8!”

“Vergil Ortiz Jr. is the most ducked fighter in boxing — period,” said Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “Big names talk tough until Vergil’s name comes up, then suddenly the phone goes silent. I commend Erickson Lubin; he has the guts that these fighters nowadays lack – courage! He has dared to enter Vergil’s den. “Since fundora , Lubin fought Arias, who he dominated and stopped; the undefeated Ramos, highly touted and yet couldn’t do anything with Lubin; and the undefeated Holmes looked like a scared puppy,” said Gary Jonas. “Don’t be surprised, the Hammer is going to beat Ortiz.”

The undefeated knockout monster and current WBC Interim Super Welterweight World Champion, Vergil Ortiz Jr., is one of the most dangerous fighters of this generation. His love for boxing began at five years old when he was introduced to the sport by his father. As a decorated amateur, he is a seven-time national champion and winner of the 2013 Junior Olympics with an impressive record of 140-20. Ortiz signed with Golden Boy in 2016 and made his professional debut on July 30 at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino with a first-round knockout of Julio Rodas. Since then, he has built an enviable fighter resume that reflects over 90-percent knockouts, and has made some of the world’s toughest contenders fold to his tremendous power including Brad “King” Solomon, Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker, Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas and Michael McKinson, to name a few. In August 2024, Ortiz Jr. secured the WBC Interim super welterweight title in a bout that is lauded as a candidate for Fight of the Year, where he went toe-to-toe with the also formerly undefeated Serhii Bohachuk in Las Vegas. He was most recently seen defending his title in dominant fashion against the elite and former WBA super welterweight champion, Israil Madrimov, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. With this masterclass victory over Madrimov, Ortiz Jr. further cements his place in the super welterweight division, and proves why the boxing world considers him an ‘old-school’ type of fighter. True to his ‘old-school’ mentality, Ortiz trains under the guidance of acclaimed coach Robert Garcia, surrounded by elite fighters at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy. The high-level environment keeps him sharp, focused and constantly evolving. With his work ethic, Ortiz stays ready to take on any challenge, anytime, anywhere – driven by a passion to give fight fans the great fights they deserve.

Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) has established himself as one of the premier contenders in boxing’s deep and talented junior-middleweight division. Born October 1, 1995, in Orlando, to Haitian parents, Lubin’s journey into boxing began at a young age, quickly standing out as one of the brightest amateur prospects in the country. He compiled an impressive 143–7 amateur record and captured the 2013 National Golden Gloves championship before deciding to turn professional at just 18 years old, bypassing the Olympic path to begin his climb toward world titles. A heavy-handed southpaw with explosive finishing ability, Lubin stormed onto the professional scene with 17 straight victories, 12 of them by knockout, showcasing a rare blend of power, speed, and technical skill. His rapid ascent earned him a shot at the WBC world title against then-champion Jermell Charlo in 2017. Though that night ended in disappointment with a first-round knockout loss, Lubin refused to be defined by the setback. Instead, he rebuilt his career with resilience and determination, proving he remained one of the most dangerous contenders in the division.Lubin returned to prominence with statement wins over top names including Nathaniel Gallimore, former world champion Jeison Rosario, and former title challenger Terrell Gausha. His ability to adapt and improve fight after fight was further evident in 2022, when he faced towering contender Sebastian Fundora in an unforgettable war. Both fighters touched the canvas in a bout that was later hailed as a Fight of the Year candidate, cementing Lubin’s reputation as both a fearless competitor and a crowd-pleasing warrior. In September 2023, Lubin solidified his standing in the division by handing previously undefeated Jesus Ramos Jr. his first professional loss in Las Vegas. Most recently, in May 2025, Lubin scored a dramatic 11th-round TKO over Ardreal Holmes Jr. in an IBF title eliminator, a victory that officially secured his place as the IBF’s mandatory challenger. Currently ranked #1 by the IBF, #3 by the WBC, and a top-five contender with the WBO, Lubin is once again knocking on the door of a world championship opportunity. With 19 of his 27 wins coming by knockout, he remains a threat to end any fight in an instant. Now entering the prime of his career, Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin continues to prove why he is regarded as one of the most talented and exciting fighters in the sport today.

Ortiz Jr vs. Lubin is a 12-round fight for the WBC Interim Super Welterweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions. The fight will take place on Saturday, November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas and will be streamed live worldwide on DAZN.

Erickson Lubin on Vergil Ortiz Jnr: ‘This is where I get my glory’

Erickson Lubin may have walked away from a title fight, but by his calculation – and given his self-confidence – there were too many factors swaying him in the direction of Vergil Ortiz Jnr.

“It’s going to be a high-paced, high-level matchup – a match they’re going to be talking about for a long time to come,” Lubin said Tuesday in his first public comments since the November 8 DAZN-streamed bout slated for Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, was finalized last week.

Appearing on ProBoxTV’s “Boxing Scene Today,” Florida’s former 154lbs title challenger Lubin, 27-2 (19 KOs), detailed the reasons why he walked away from the opportunity to fight IBF titleholder Bakhram Murtazaliev to take on WBC interim belt holder Ortiz, 23-0 (21 KOs), inside his home-state Texas den.

“We felt this was the better option,” Lubin said. “Murtazaliev, we were going to get, but it seemed like no one was going to pick it up and pay for that fight. I was all in on that fight. I didn’t want to pass up on fighting for a world title.”

But in extended talks with ProBox CEO Garry Jonas (also owner of Boxing Scene), Lubin knew the purse bid for his mandatory challenge of Russia’s destructive Murtazaliev came with an uncertain purse structure, versus the guaranteed offer put on the table by Ortiz promoter Golden Boy after his attempts to fight former welterweight titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis and new WBO 154lbs belt holder Xander Zayas went unanswered.

Fighting Ortiz meant more than double the purse money.

“The Vergil fight was there for me and it’s a bigger fight for me, to be honest. Vergil has a big promotion and DAZN behind him,” Lubin said. “Beating a guy like Vergil Ortiz sets me up for every champion. It’s a big fight, a mega-fight.”

Ortiz is coming off impressive victories on the scorecards over top-ranked WBC contender Serhii Bohachuk and former WBA 154lbs champion Israil Madrimov.

ProBoxTV analysts Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi suggested to Lubin that Ortiz has a bigger profile than Murtazaliev and he “might be the guy in the weight class,” repeating daunting tasks that Lubin has already accepted in the division by fighting former undisputed champion Jermell Charlo and current WBA titleholder Sebastian Fundora.

“Me fighting for the WBC interim might be bigger than fighting for the IBF title,” said Lubin, noting the strain of the IBF’s next-day weigh-in rule, which restricts title fighters from rehydrating more than 10 pounds, a requirement Ortiz also frowned upon.

“This is a firefight, a big fight,” Lubin said.

Although Lubin, 29, admitted that Ortiz, 27, may be viewing him as an ideal foe to prepare for fellow DAZN fighter Ennis, “It sets me up” in victory “for Fundora and the other champions,” Lubin said. “I’m truly focused.

“[Ortiz] is a savage, comes to fight every time out there. We’re the same height, the same size, with the same pedigree.”

Lubin maintained that he didn’t take “too much wear and tear,” even though his face was battered in the 2022 loss to Fundora. He said fighting just four times since June 2021 has allowed time for recuperation, and subsequent victories over Premier Boxing Champions standout Jesus Ramos Jnr and IBF eliminator opponent Ardreal Holmes has strengthened him.

“I’m still eager for those [immense] matchups. I’m in it for those fights, in it to be a legend, and Vergil will bring a lot out of me,” Lubin said. “I know what’s at stake. It’s like judgment day for both of us, with people saying he hasn’t fought the champions yet.

“For me, going to his backyard, on a different platform, to come out victorious … this is where I get my glory.”

ERICKSON LUBIN CHOSE 'SAVAGE' VERGIL ORTIZ OVER BAKHRAM MURTAZALIEV FOR HIGHER PURSE, PROFILE

Erickson Lubin understands exactly what he signed up for when he passed on his mandated shot at Bakhram Murtazaliev’s IBF junior middleweight title.

Lubin didn’t just agree to fight in his opponent’s proverbial backyard November 8 in Fort Worth, Texas. Vergil Ortiz is one of the most fearless, ferocious fighters in the 154-pound division, the type of dangerous opponent Lubin believes will earn him the widespread respect he craves when he pulls off an upset.

“I feel like he’s a savage,” Lubin told The Ring. “He fights. You’re gonna really have to like kill him. You’ve gotta really put a beating on him. He’s not gonna stop. He’s strong. He has experience. Even though he hasn’t fought none of the champions, he has experience. He’s fought some respectable opponents. And he has a great coach in Robert Garcia, so I feel like we definitely got our hands full.”

Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs), of nearby Grand Prairie, Texas, will defend his WBC super welterweight title against Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) at Dickies Arena.

If Ortiz wins, he could finally fight rival Jaron Ennis next, assuming he defeats Angola’s Uisma Lima (14-1, 10 KOs) on October 11 at Wells Fargo Center in Ennis' hometown of Philadelphia. It'll be the 154-pound debut for the heavily favored Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs, 1 NC).

DAZN will stream the Ennis-Lima and Ortiz-Lubin bouts in hopes of offering a highly anticipated showdown between the favorites to its subscribers sometime in February.

Lubin, an experienced southpaw from Orlando, Florida, is motivated to ruin one of the most intriguing fights in boxing. The 29-year-old contender is also hellbent on disproving the perception that he is past his prime three years after his brutal battle with Sebastian Fundora.

Lubin is 3-0 since that unforgettable fight was stopped following the ninth round in April 2022 in Las Vegas. He has defeated a pair of unbeaten boxers in his last two bouts — Jesus Ramos (then 20-0) and Ardreal Holmes (then 17-0) — but Lubin senses fans and pundits have overlooked him due to the brutal nature of his loss to Fundora and his one-punch, first-round knockout defeat to former unified champ Jermell Charlo in October 2017.

The IBF ordered Russia’s Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) to defend his title against Lubin, who defeated Holmes by 11th-round technical knockout in an elimination match May 10 in Kissimmee, Florida, to become mandatory challenger. As much as another title shot appealed to him, Lubin chose to oppose Ortiz, 27, because it’ll pay him a bigger purse and its a higher-profile opponent.

“I feel like this is gonna be a breakout performance for me,” Lubin said. “I feel like this is the best the whole boxing world will ever see me. It’s a great matchup for the fans and I feel like it’s gonna be a big win for myself. I’m just ready to solidify my name as one of the best 154-pounders ever.”

ERICKSON LUBIN TOLD HE CAN WIN VERGIL ORTIZ JR. FIGHT, BUT MUST AVOID ONE THING

Beating Erickson Lubin won’t be easy, but in the eyes of many, Vergil Ortiz Jr. has more than enough to get the job done.

The two will stand in the middle of the ring and bang it out at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 8. On paper, their showdown figures to be a fun one, but considering that Lubin has been in his fair share of wars, there’s an overwhelming belief that he's in too deep against Ortiz, who will have home field advantage.

Derek “Bozy” Ennis, Jaron's father and trainer, doesn’t understand what everyone is talking about. Lubin shouldn't be doubted, especially if his head is screwed on right.

“People are counting Erickson Lubin out, I don’t count him out,” Ennis said to YSM Sports Media. “I think it’s a great fight. If Erickson Lubin does what he’s supposed to do, I think he can edge the fight.”

Lubin, 29, has been on the big stage before. And while he hasn’t won all of his big fights, he does have a few notable victories under his belt. After Sebastian Fundora stopped him in 2022, Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) picked himself up and got back to work, winning his next three fights in the process.

Ortiz will represent Lubin’s third straight undefeated opponent. He’s hoping that the WBC interim 154-pound champ will fall in line, much like Ardreal Holmes Jr. did.

Lubin took it to his amateur rival on May 10 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida, stopping him in the 11th round. Ortiz, though, is a whole different animal.

In his last two appearances, he took down highly-ranked 154-pounders Serhii Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov.

Ennis has paid close attention to Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) over the years. He’s rough, tough, strong, and relentless. Those attributes could spell trouble for Lubin, so Ennis urges him to use his skills and not rely on his physical toughness.

“If I’m Lubin, I wouldn’t get into that type of war with him," Ennis continued. "Be smart. I would box. Lubin is a good boxer. Give him angles, don’t stay in front.”

Set to provide chief support on Nov. 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, on DAZN is Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield when he takes on Joseph Diaz in a 10-round lightweight bout, Golden Boy Promotions announced Friday.

The card will also feature Darius Fulghum taking on David Stevens in a 10-round super middleweight fight, while heavyweight prospect and 2024 U.S. Olympian Joshua Edwards opens the broadcast against Zeno Vooris in a six-round heavyweight fight.

Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs), ranked No. 6 by The Ring at 135 pounds, was looking to leverage his sensational first-round knockout against Tevin Farmer in June to a title shot against IBF champion Raymond Muratalla, but that fight fell through the cracks after negotiations kicked off. Instead, Schofield will face the durable Diaz (34-8-1, 15 KOs), who is coming off a unanimous decision defeat in an August barnburner against Regis Prograis.

Diaz is 3-7-1 since beating Farmer for a 130-pound title over five years ago.

Fulghum (14-1, 12 KOs) is looking to get back in the win column following a firefight and razor-thin unanimous decision loss against Bektemir Melikuziev in May. Stevens (15-2, 10 KOs) has alternated wins and losses over his last four fights, but is coming off a career-best win in June against the previously unbeaten Petr Khamukov. Stevens also suffered a split-decision defeat against Melikuziev in 2024 and a first-round knockout to Joeshon James in 2023.

Edwards (4-0, 4 KOs), trained by Ronnie Shields, will be fighting for the fifth time since making his pro debut in April.

“Golden Boy has mastered the art of building fight cards that keep fans on their feet from the opening bell to the final round,” promoter Oscar De La Hoya said in a prepared statement. “This will be an all-out Texas showdown featuring some of the sport’s top fighters.”

Two years later, Floyd Schofield, JoJo Diaz meet at the crossroads

There remains a healthy faction of the sport who’ve yet to look favorably upon the Floyd Schofield Jnr-Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jnr crossroads bout.

It was a fair question to ask why “Kid Austin” would take this fight while coming off the biggest win of his career. The 23-year-old lightweight even managed to address the elephant in the room while asked what rides on their November 8 clash from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I feel like everything is (on the line),” Schofield told host Todd Grisham during a kickoff press conference Tuesday at Texas Live! in nearby Arlington, Texas. “I feel like people are overlooking JoJo, they say he’s washed and all that. If we be real, if I lose to a guy like that, I don’t know where I go.

“Everything rides on this fight – my ranking, my chance at a world title. I’m definitely coming in focused and am here to put on a good show.”

Schofield-Diaz will serve as the co-feature to the highly anticipated Vergil Ortiz Jnr-Erickson Lubin WBC interim 154lbs title fight. Both bouts will air live on DAZN.

The pairing was first suggested after both claimed wins in separate bouts on a July 2023 DAZN event from AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. Ironically, Ortiz was due to headline the show in a challenge of secondary WBA welterweight titlist Eimantas Stanionis. Ortiz withdrew when he fell ill during fight week, at which point Schofield was elevated to main event.

Schofield and Diaz were open to the idea of a head-on collision later that year, but such plans never came close to materializing.

At least not until now.

Fast forward to present day, where Schofield, 19-0 (13 KOs) is coming off his best win to date. The 23-year-old Austin, Texas native scored a 78-second annihilation of former IBF 130lbs titlist Tevin Farmer on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The bout came at the right time for both fighters. Farmer has been on the slide but went tooth and nail in a pair of narrow defeats to then-unbeaten and top-rated lightweight contender William Zepeda. Meanwhile, Schofield was in need of career redemption after he fell ill and was pulled from a Shakur Stevenson WBC 135lbs title fight earlier this year.

The knockout win over Farmer came on the undercard of the Jake Paul-Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr DAZN Pay-Per-View undercard from Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The event carried the right amount of profile for such a performance, which became an instant highlight reel moment.

Perhaps adding to the disappointment of this announced matchup with Diaz, 34-8-1 (15 KOs) isn’t so much who Schofield will next face, but the other rumored option. Reports suggested that he was in talks with unbeaten IBF 135lbs titleholder Raymond Muratalla, who remains without an opponent for his planned maiden title defense.

In comparison, the current version of the 32-year-old Diaz is a considerable step down.

The 2012 Olympian reached his career pinnacle in his own win over Farmer, who was the IBF 130lbs titlist at the time of their January 2020 meeting in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Diaz never managed a successful defense. The combination of the win coming just before the pandemic and an erratic lifestyle – not without its legal issues – saw Diaz lose the belt at the scales ahead of an eventual February 2021 draw with Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov. The stalemate sparked a steady decline for Diaz, who is just 3-7-1 in his last eleven starts.

His own redemption story comes through the significant lifestyle changes made beyond the ropes.

“I give my life to Christ and I’ve just been focused and determined and hungry again,” Diaz insisted. “I got that hunger and that drive back. I’ve been busting my ass.”

It has, in part, shown in the ring.

Like Farmer, Diaz saw his stock rise in defeat following his strong showing in a narrow defeat to former two-time 140lbs titlist Regis Prograis. Their August 2 slugfest saw Diaz deliver his most competitive performance in years, only to come up short on the three scorecards in their DAZN-aired battle from Chicago, Illinois.

“You guys have seen it against Regis. I fought him at 140 but I gave him two pounds because he couldn’t make the weight and I felt like I did good,” noted Diaz. “This fight I’m going back down to 135 and I’m gonna take back what’s mine. Take back the throne.”

Diaz increasingly rose in weight after a December 2021 points loss to then-WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney in Las Vegas. He came in over the contracted limit in consecutive fights with Zepeda, Mercito Gesta and Jerry Perez.

A more disciplined effort was put forth in his past five starts, including his hitting the 135lbs limit for a stay-busy win on June 21 in Tijuana.

“I feel like it’s my time right now, man,” claimed Diaz. “I’ve been through a lot, I feel like I’ve seen everything inside that ring. I have all the experience in the world. I’ve fought top contenders for three to four years already and I feel like it’s my time.

“Kid Austin is gonna be taking his first defeat with me, but he’s gonna have to bounce back. He’s still young in the game, but he’s gonna take the L and that’s how it is.”

If nothing else, call this one unfinished business.

Vergil Ortiz and Erickson Lubin respectful yet confident of victory over the other

Beyond the predicted outcome, Vergil Ortiz Jnr and Erickson Lubin pretty much agreed on all aspects of their upcoming showdown.

Even the nature of the one-sided marketing.

The visiting Lubin took exception to a promotional fight poster bearing only Ortiz’s liking ahead of their anticipated November 8 WBC interim 154lbs title fight. The two will meet atop a DAZN show from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, mere miles from Ortiz’s hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Lubin – the visiting southpaw from Orlando, Florida – expected Ortiz to get the local edge but wasn’t keen on his likeness not appearing anywhere on the piece of promo material in his possession. As much was expressed when he ripped it in half while sharing his final thoughts.

“I do want to say this poster is a little disrespectful to me and my team,” Lubin said during a kickoff press conference Tuesday at Texas Live! in nearby Arlington, Texas. “They got me somewhere in the dark somewhere. They have Vergil as something like the moon, all over me and stuff like that.

“This is disrespectful, I don’t like it. This is disrespectful to me and my brand.”

To their credit, Ortiz and Golden Boy Promotions’ chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya both sympathized with Lubin’s discomfort.

“I didn’t make the poster,” Ortiz quipped in return, a sentiment echoed by his Hall of Fame promoter.

As for the fight, Ortiz, 23-0 (21KOs) and Lubin, 27-2 (19 KOs) seemed just as excited as everyone else about the forthcoming pairing.

Ortiz will attempt the second defense of the interim title he has held for more than a year. The primary WBC 154lbs beltholder is Sebastian Fundora, who next defends against Keith Thurman on October 25 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While not mentioning the 6’5 ½” southpaw by name, De La Hoya insisted that Fundora was among a slew of top fighters in the division who wanted no part of Ortiz.

“I want to start by saying, every world champion at 154 pounds did not want to fight Vergil Ortiz,” said De La Hoya, sporting all black while on stage to hype up the event. “They came up with excuses. – ‘I’m not ready I need a tune-up, I want to fight someone else.’

“This is the fight game. You want to be the best you have to fight the best.”

There are several ironic takes to De La Hoya’s strong claims.

For starters, Golden Boy proudly promotes undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora, who is fresh off a knockout victory over the weekend in Indio, California. She is the younger sister to Sebastian, who was on hand for the event as is the case for the entire family – their father, Freddy, trains both – whenever either are in the ring.

The other twist of fate that led to this fight being finalized was the one that Lubin stepped down from to move forward with this event.

Lubin previously secured his place as the mandatory challenger to unbeaten IBF titlist Bakhram Murtazaliev. Their ordered title fight was due to head to a purse bid hearing, when Lubin – who is represented by ProBox TV founder Garry Jonas (who also owns Boxing Scene) – and his team opted out of the matchup once he was offered a more lucrative opportunity to face Ortiz.

“This is why I respect Erickson Lubin so much,” noted De La Hoya. “Not only is he the number one contender in the world. He’s fought [Jermell] Charlo, he’s fought the tough fights. He has the experience and he has the confidence. That’s a real fight.

“A lot is at stake. He wants to win, Vergil wants to be a unified world champion. Lubin wants to be champion.”

Lubin has won three straight and nine of his last ten starts since an October 2017 knockout loss to Jermell Charlo in a WBC 154lbs title bid. His lone defeat since then came to Fundora, against whom he was stopped after nine rounds in their 2022 Fight of the Year entrant.

An eleventh-round knockout of unbeaten Ardreal Holmes this past May positioned Lubin for another title shot. Rather than the unbeaten Murtazaliev, however, it’s the higher-profile Ortiz whose career he intends to derail.

“I fought for the world title in just my (fifth) year. This is my 12th year as a pro,” noted Lubin, who turns 30 in October. “I took no steps back. I fought top opposition after top opposition and Vergil Ortiz is no different. He’s another top fighter. This is my third undefeated fighter in a row, and I’m looking to become that dude at 154 pounds.

“I want to give a big shoutout to Gary Jonas. You know, that’s one guy that believed in me from the beginning. I’ve been with him since I was 17 years old, and I turn 30 next week. I’m just excited. Vergil Ortiz is a great competitor, and I think the fans are in for a treat.”

Tuesday’s press conference happened to coincide with his daughter Malachai’s fourth birthday.
“You know, it’s the sacrifices you’ve gotta make,” Lubin said of the boxing grind. “Being away from family, being away from their birthdays and stuff like that, just so I can give them a better way of living.”

While Lubin fights for his family and career redemption, Ortiz aims to carry a city on his back.

The unbeaten Texan saw his perfect knockout-to-win run end last summer in a majority decision win over Serhii Bohachuk for the secondary version of the WBC title. Ortiz survived two knockdowns to prevail in their Fight of the Year-level slugfest in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In his most recent start, Ortiz once again went the 12-round distance. This time it came in a more convincing victory as he outpointed former WBA titlist Israil Madrimov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A minor hand injury left Ortiz out of the ring longer than desired but also provided the avenue to return home. This will mark his first fight in Texas since an 9th round knockout of unbeaten Michael McKinson in August 2022 at the very venue that will host this event.

It was his third straight fight at home, a run that included stoppages over Egidijus Kavaliauskas in nearby Frisco and former 140lbs titlist Maurice Hooker also at Dickies Arena.

The expectation for this return is his biggest crowd yet.

“It’s going to be electric,” vowed Ortiz. “Everyone in the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) - Grand Prairie, Fort Worth, Dallas, wherever they’re from – they always show out. There’s a big fan base here for boxing. I know all the fans here are going to enjoy it on November 8.”

A lot is at stake for Ortiz, whose name is attached to very big matchups in 2026.

He and WBO titleholder Xander Zayas have circled one another, with the unbeaten Puerto Rican actually the top priority for this fight. Zayas and his team opted instead for a homecoming of his own in, with plans for a title defense to take place in Puerto Rico early next year.

Meanwhile, a potential superfight looms with Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

The unbeaten former lineal and unified welterweight champ makes his 154lbs debut on October 11 in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The claim from his side is that he and promoter Matchroom Boxing have already agreed to next face Ortiz, though the framework on the other side still needs to be discussed.

There is also the matter of upgrading his current title.

Ortiz’s clash with Lubin takes place three weeks before this year’s annual WBC convention. It is wholly expected that the sanctioning body will order a title consolidation bout between the respective winners of Fundora-Thurman and Ortiz-Lubin.

Needless to say, a lot is riding on a win in November. Ortiz has never been more confident, though mainly out of the high regard in which he holds Lubin – which, in turn, has prompted a heightened commitment to leave no stone unturned in training camp.

“I’m very motivated. I want to win. I want to win looking good,” insisted Ortiz. “Just being in the ring with someone with the pedigree like Erickson Lubin, it motivates me to train harder, to actually want to come to the gym.

“I’ve been in some fights where I’m fighting someone and I’m like, “Let’s just get this thing over with.” This fight, I look forward to the gym; I want to work hard; I want to do good in sparring. So that is the kind of fight this is.”

ERICKSON LUBIN ‘LOOKING TO BECOME THAT DUDE AT 154 POUNDS’ AGAINST VERGIL ORTIZ

Erickson Lubin hasn’t reached the top of the junior middleweight mountain, but he’s steadily climbing.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old had some slip-ups along his journey, but currently, he’s right where he wants to be. Come November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, he’ll have a chance to solidify himself as one of the division’s top dogs when he takes on Vergil Ortiz Jr.

“This my third undefeated fighter in a row,” Lubin said during a recent press conference. “I’m looking to become that dude at 154 pounds.”

Although he did come up short against Sebastian Fundora in April 2022, Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) has picked up three consecutive victories, with the latest coming at the expense of Ardreal Holmes Jr. on May 10.

Even with that stoppage victory under his belt, Lubin is a heavy underdog against Ortiz, and for good reason.

Long story short, Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) has been a monster since the moment he turned pro. To stamp himself as one of the best fighters at 154 pounds, the interim WBC champ went on an unforgettable run.

First, he picked himself up off the deck twice against Serhii Bohachuk 13 months ago in Las Vegas and won a majority decision. He then beat top-five contender and former champion Israil Madrimov at ANB Arena on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Lubin is no fool. He’s been watching some of Ortiz’s violent handiwork from a distance. He also knows that come fight night, the Texas crowd will be cheering for his opponent, who is from nearby Grand Prairie.

He couldn’t care less that the crowd will be on Ortiz’s side. He also doesn't care how he gets it done. The only thing that matters to him is finding a way to escape with Ortiz’s interim WBC strap.

“It’s gonna be a great fight,” Lubin continued. “Only thing that matters to me is walking out of the arena with my hand raised and the crowd silent.”

VERGIL ORTIZ MOTIVATED TO LOOK GOOD IN VICTORY, RESPECTS ERICKSON LUBIN'S THREAT

Erickson Lubin isn't some journeyman looking for a paycheck and an easy way out.

Vergil Ortiz knows he's hungry and determined. So while he understands why he's the favorite, it'll be anything but an easy night November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

"He has intellect, experience and power," Ortiz said during their first press conference this week. "He likes to fight, I've seen his fights before. He legitimately goes in there to fight people. I respect that about him."

Over the last few years, Ortiz’s admiration for Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) has only increased. With the 29-year-old on a three-fight winning streak, he feels like he’s just entering his prime.

But, no matter how impressive Lubin has looked recently, arguably no other 154-pound contender has put together a run quite like the current interim WBC junior middleweight beltholder.

Ortiz, 27, beat then-top 5 contender in Serhii Bohachuk in August last year before following that Fight of the Year contender six months later with a disciplined victory over perennial contender and former WBA champion Israil Madrimov.

Those victories placed him firmly on the map in his third weight class, though Lubin is of that ilk — if not higher. Ortiz needs to be on his A game and even that might not be enough.

Returning from a hand injury, Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) expects to raise his game a few levels to beat Lubin and move on to bigger matchups.

"I'm very motivated," Ortiz said. "I wanna win and look good doing it. Being in the ring with someone of Erickson Lubin's pedigree just motivates me to train harder."

Ortiz having dispatched Madrimov easier than Crawford could, I suspect is going to make fairly easy work out of Lubin. It is respectable that Lubin was able to claw his way back into contention after that embarrassing loss to Jermell Charlo years ago, but I suspect he's worked his way back to another loss with this one.
