Robert Helenius announces retirement

Robert Helenius announces retirement after serving suspension

Finland’s Robert Helenius has announced his retirement from boxing after the conclusion of his two-year suspension.

The heavyweight tested positive for the banned substance clomifene after his defeat by Anthony Joshua in August 2023, and became eligible to fight again on September 18.

“I no longer have the desire to train twice a day,” he regardless told Borgaa Daily. “It’s time to move on.” He did, however, also say that he would consider fighting again in the event of receiving “a very good offer”.

If the fight with Joshua, in which he was stopped in the seventh round, proves the last of Helenius’ career, his record will forever read 32-5 (21KOs).

He also recorded defeats against Deontay Wilder, Gerald Washington, Dillian Whyte and, for the first time in his career, in 2016, Johann Duhaupas.

The victory over Derek Chisora in 2011 was the highest-profile of Helenius’ career, but it was also a controversial one after which it was widely believed that the decision he was awarded was unjust. He by then was the European champion.

Didn't know he wasn't retired already. That's a good sign that he made the right call.

Helenius was nice to watch, win or lose, had nice scraps with Kownacki, Teper, Duhaupas. He could both kayo and get kayoed spectacularly. A decent fighter with a decent career.

He derailed the Kownacki hype train.

Kownacki was being lined up for Wilder for ages.

He went downhill after losing to big Rob
